Any chance of a Kindle Fire sized iPad 3? Or is Apple purposely positioning the iPhone as their only pocket planner sized device?

nerd math.. wait, all math is nerd math. carry on.

I'm actually surprised how much of this has leaked. I thought Apple had a tighter grip on things.

So we're confirmed for 2048x1536 display, 1GB ram, and dual core A5X.

No surprises necessary, then. That'll do.

To me, the specs are nothing than specs. It just tells me that the device will run wonderfully.

The keynote won't blow anyone away (partially thanks to all the leaks).

What WILL blow everyone away is seeing a freaking retina display of that size in person for the first time, especially when comparing it to an iPad 2. Going to be crazy awesome.

yup

I'm kind of disappointed in the dual core...but the A5 comes very close to a Tegra 3 in performance (I think). I would to see want a modified version could do.

iOS and OS X are pretty multicore capable operating systems, and GCD and OpenCL are getting more popular by the day.
They don't magically make things scale across multiple processors/GPUs though, there's still extra work to it, if the code can even take advantage of it much.
Think how much your iPad 2 will have devalued by the time you decide to upgrade to the next model. Do it now, cut your losses. Then do it every year.
Plus you're getting a new warranty along with it.
I think when Apple evaluates a chip for their tablets they also take into consideration on whether to not they will be able to effectively use it for the the iPhone in the fall without killing the battery life. I think quad core won't work for iPhone 5, you can already see the effect that the dual-core A5 has had on battery life on the iPhone 4S (100 hours less standby).

So my prediction is that A5X for iPad 3, miniaturized under clocked (800mhz) A5X for iPhone 5 and a dual core A6 (using dual-A15 cores instead of quad-A9) for iPad 4. I don't think apple is going to go quad core at all. Ban bet motherfuckers.
ARM's little.big thing might be ready in time for iPad 4...which would be quad core in a different way. Two low power cores for basic stuff and two high powered for faster stuff as needed. Are you counting that as ban worthy?
Did you mean that for iPad 4? A dual-core A15?

Is it advantageous to stay with the same number of cores (ie. dual core A9 and then to a dual core A15) as opposed to potentially going from dual to quad and then maybe back to dual?
Doesn't matter as long as the software isn't hard coded to anything, like something that'll scale to many cores should be fine on fewer cores as well.
I'm probably sticking my foot in my mouth again, but isn't one of the features of the ARM Cortex-15 the ability to allow the implementor better scale how many cores they want to put in?
How it works is that ARM makes a core design with whatever particular standard stuff and licenses that out, then whoever can make a whole CPU based off of it. Assuming the core is meant to be scalable to multiple cores, then yeah the implementor can do whatever the hell they want. Same goes for PowerVR.

Basically you have these core design licenses and get smart people together to throw all this stuff onto a chip (the SoC/System on a Chip), customizing it to your needs. However many cores (as the design allows), clock speeds, memory, whatever other random controllers, etc.
the dual core vs quad core expectations and performance concerns are premature. I mean, do we have any idea what clock speed the potential A5X will be set at? Any other tweaks to the chip? Who knows how much of a boost it will be over the A5

let’s wait till we see some performance videos (probably tomorrow after the keynote) of webpage loading, app launching, etc... to see how the iPad 3 handles itself with this resolution increase.
There's the "macroscalar" patent and IP application from a little while back (not completely sure but it seems to be hardware/software combo or something) but that's about it as far as mystery tweaks. No signs of clock speed but I'm hoping in the range of 1.5ghz+ or so.

After the keynote will devs be able to start working on Retina apps?

Will apple stores have ipad 3s for demo before sale, or only on the day of sale?

When the curtains come off the store windows, the new iPads will be set up for demo where the old ones are.

All I'm wondering now is about those exclusive little features, hardware enabled or not, that new iOS devices use to have over its predecessors.

I'm guessing that at the very least, it will get nuance dictation. But I wonder about something entirely new. Some software feature that actually takes advantage from the hi-res screen and double RAM. 1GB RAM is a new maximum on iOS, after all.

It's the first time that an iPad will have more RAM than the latest iPhone. It will be the undisputed king of iOS hardware by some margin.

It will be worth something but not for the reason you state. I'm sure you could sell it at a garage sale 15 years from now.

In 15 years well be on the ipad 18 which is scary. I like my 2 so no reason to upgrade. Might get a 4 next year by that time most apps will be updated for the higher res.

The leaks are controlled to eke out hype and to hide the REAL surprises...

Not sure if serious. It's 15 hrs before the event and only hardcore tech fans and the hardcore tech press are following this stuff this closely. Apple plans on selling tens of millions of these to the general public. Why would they leak stuff so soon before the event to such a small group?

Yeah, they require specific code to take advantage of multiple cores, however Apple has provided some great APIs and methods to make it really simple, and the code behind APIs themselves may in many instances be coded to be heavily multithreaded. So while apps will need to be specifically written to get all the benefits, they do get some for free due to code reuse. Plus LLVM gets better with each iteration at intelligently reworking code at compile time.

I'm aware of how an SoC gets built, my question was more along the lines of "Does the Cortex-15 offer any superior ability at allowing the SoC designer to easily add and remove cores relative to the Cortex-9. Making it easier for a company such as Apple to come up with a 'single' design to derive two different chips one with 2 cores and one chips with 4"

Just sold my Transformer Prime. Loved it but the Wifi reception was not strong enough, nor was the battery.

I'm back to the dark side, because, despite it's flaws (I'm predicting the same ones as the ipad2), the ipad3 will still be the best tablet on the market.

Ready to pre order tomorrow morning. This will be my first time getting and apple product at launch. I hope I'll be able to preorder on my SMARTPHONE, gah. I will NOT be waiting in any lines for this.

I was mostly joking. I was referring to the notion that Apple can be tight-lipped should they choose to be, and implying that in this instance, they chose not to be. Mountain Lion was pretty amazing in that regard. Obviously, software is much easier to hide, since there's no supply chain, but that said, who knows what software secrets lurk in iPad3. But mostly joking.

I think there's a good chance that the new iPad will come with iOS5.1, with it being held back to hold some secret sauce. No doubt there will be some added functionality and maybe even some surprises for current iPad owners. Fixed Music App please!
