Read the OP.

It's very insightful on such matters.

The OP assumes you've already played DOTA or LOL. First thing it says is "here's what's different: art" and then goes directly into "differences between Dota 2 and LOL/HON". I haven't played those games.

I'll add a Learning the Ropes section when I'm back from vacation.

Yes.

But it's the learning path so it's normal. Your reaction times will be faster if you assign easy hotkeys for you and learn to use them.

Also, don't create trees with Furion if we're not pushing. =3
lol man, I did those 'cause they were pushing our lane. yes if they do they will have some problems at last hitting but the creeps can damage our tower.

btw how can I assign hotkeys for items?
and the problem is: I have my fingers on QWER, can't use the tumb so dunno. can't really find any good key. A is ok but is already for deny, maybe T but no more.

That's what I was trying to tell you. Pull back the creeps. The creeps AI will ALWAYS prioritize units/heroes over hitting towers. For that reason, you attack the creeps and they will all switch target to you.

Then, you retreat further back, pulling the creepwave well inside your safe territory between the 1st and 2nd tower, where your reinforcing creepwave will come in and hold them there. So you get freefarm, opposing team get nothing.

By default, the hotkeys for item are on the numpad. You can just go into options and change them to just about anything you want. Some commons choices are 123456, ZXCVBN, ZXC Alt-Z, Alt-X, Alt-C, Alt-Q/W/E/A/S/D, and F1-F6. Your best bet is the number keys of 123456. Also, if you really want to get down and dirty, you can use the autoconfig files to bind multiple buttons to the same item slot (I have Item slot 6 bound to both F6 and the F key, and put things like Dust, Blink Dagger, Eul's, Atos, Force Staff, and Phase Boots on it)

Am I a newb because I love Zues? I know I'll try some other Heros as I play but right now I'm busy smiting all those who oppose me....

I just play Windrunner for now, as I'm still new to the game as a whole and just trying to pick up general good play tactics. I've played like 10 nights in a row as her.

I've been playing WR for the past few games as well. As someone completely new to the MOBA genre she's one of the few characters that I feel not completely horrible with.

Nah, Zeus is great. He also has built in invisibility detection, which most people don't realize. His W, the lightning bolt, will give a 900 range true sight for 3 seconds from the point it hits (Also 1000 normal vision, so it will give you a bit of extra sight at night for the 3 seconds), and does a Mini-stun which will stop channeling abilities (Like Teleporting). His ult will also give 900 range true sight for 3 seconds on every enemy (But will not hurt invisible units). His static field also scales really well into the late game. He can't really carry, but he can throw a ton of damage in a fight, and bring an entire team down to half health in 2 seconds during a fight. (W, Q, Ult, GTFO)

I know but when I go back doing that one creep still hit the tower, that catapult or how the hell is called. besides opponents can stay there and hit the tower while you're farming between the 1st and 2nd tower.

This is why I love him. When I do manage to build a Refresher Orb I can sometimes wipeout their entire team during a team fight (with two back-to-back ults).

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOB!

Naw, Zeus is pretty good. He's got some excellent high damage pretty early on. Though he doesn't have nearly the same impact late game, he does provide some excellent global presence during the early/mid. Just be careful about only using his ult for kill stealing (securing?). I wouldn't recommend sniping with it unless it is guaranteed the enemy is going to get away. Otherwise you might not have it if a team fight breaks out.

Hm, I'll have to give her a try. I've been avoiding her for the most part because I feel she's so overplayed. But if she's beginner friendly then it would be good to pick her up incase I ever get in games where people are given the hard solo lane.

How should I learn to play this? I am able to play now, I just don't know how since I never played the original. Should I just play with bots until I understand more?

Just Google "Dota 2 hero's for beginners", find one you like and jump on in the real deal. You'll suck and it will be painful for a handful of games but you'll get the hang of it and feel like you're contributing in no time. Just don't get discourage early on and let people's opinion affect you.

Someone earlier also suggested that you mention right away that you're new and I agree. The team will go easy on you and most will try and teach you tactics and strategies as you go.

First, try a practice game, Turn on some bots, and try and get an idea about the controls. Buy some items, play around with the shop, have the courier bring you some stuff, walk around, kill some creeps, toss a few spells, get an idea of how to control the character.

Then, try the Co-Op Bot matchmaking option that was recently added. I can't say for sure how the player base for it will be, but I can't see them being overly uptight. Try and explain you are new, and most likely someone will help you.

Once you feel you got a decent grip on the game (You should be fine after 2 or 3 bot games IMO), just play normal match making. You will likely be the worst, but the best way to learn is truly trial by fire. If you can, try to play with some friends or gaffer with some VoIP program like Mumble, having someone to talk with should help.

actually I have two side buttons my mouse.
but how do I use them as hotkeys for items?

In the settings. Not at home so I can't recall the exact name, but in the controls you can bind them to an item slot. Just click the mouse button in the respected box.

Yoooooooooooooooo Meeru on bitchsupport and Puber with the fail-carry! It's like I never stopped playing. I love how they're both banned and can't reply back on GAF.

KAG!

If the opponent is there when all the creeps are pulled back out of tower range, the tower will wreck the hero.

One catapult pelting rocks at a tower is not worth the tradeoff of denying experience, having basically free gold and pushing the lane.

The siege creep will get at most 3 hits off before the tower takes it down, most heroes taking potshots at it won't do very much damage at all. If they overstay their welcome, they'll take a few hits themselves (which isn't a very good trade when you're laning and trying to save your consumables for player harassment and ganks).

There's a fine line to be walked here, of course. If you're up against a heavy pusher like a Leshrac you should probably never do this, because if he's paying attention he can turn on Diabolic Edict and do a significant amount of damage to the tower in the seconds that the creep wave is pulled back. Other nasties to be careful with: Dragon Knight (after level 6, ult gives tower damage over time), Death Prophet (after level 6, ult is akin to Edict in that it does massive single-target damage), Prophet (once he gets levels in his teleport and Treants), Jakiro (once he gets levels in his Liquid Fire, slows tower attack speed significantly), Pugna (Nether Blast does great damage to towers), and then your assorted pushers like Chen, Enchantress, Enigma.

Thanks, guys. Good suggestions. I'll probably get on for a bit tonight. I do have a friend or two that I could play with so that should help out a bit.

Is Windrunner overplayed? I have no idea and I really find it hard to care in a game with so many characters to choose from. At least I've never gone to pick her and had someone already have her chosen.

I don't know whether she's considered anymore noob friendly than your average character, but I like her stun, I like her nuke, I like that she has an escape/damage mitigation skill, I like that she's ranged, and I like that her ultimate is good for tearing down towers. One of the things I like most about games in this genre is the feeling of pulling down a tower.

Windrunner just has everything, she can do every sort of lane (solo/dual/tri) on any lane. She has a stun/nuke AND escape, plus a building damage ulti. Being ranged also helps with all that, so all that combined with some good items and she's just great.

That's why she's picked in 99.9% off all the pro games as well.

Just had a fun game with drow ranger, shes pretty brutal once you are well farmed.

Game ended in a funny way. We had killed all their bottom buildings but the game went on for about 15 minutes longer. After a big team fight near our base they all died and none of them had noticed the creeps were already hitting their ancient. Creeps killed it entirely, none of our team ever touched it :lol

Cool. What are some other characters with a similar suite of abilities?

Mirana has all of those sorta, but her stun is really hard to land, and she's a bit harder to play in general.

Looking over the list I can't really think of any other heroes that all have that and are easy to play. Venomancer has a slow/nuke and can use his wards to scout, but he has no escape. Lion and Shadow Shaman are both great versatile heroes, but both don't have an escape.

So yeah taking all that into account, just shows how great Windrunner is.

Damn Carl, Cheeto and Finalozzo that may have been one of my favorite games of the beta. Loose canon Fifth man pub Sven and everything. Relentless split push assaults, amazing defenses, impromptu team fights and pick offs due to Sven and one last all empowered push gone wrong then gone terribly right.

yeah gg indeed.
and I <3 sand king.

The reason he is the "Worst" is he doesn't fit into the pub meta or the pro meta well. His skill are great, but he doesn't have any great home.

I would say a lot more makes him "bad" than just not fitting into a meta.

1. Slow heal
2. Channeled slow (even if it's one of the strongest slows in the game)
3. No stun
4. Fatal bonds requires excellent positioning but ultimately pushes your lane
5. No escape

His laning phase is awful, and he's useless without his ult up. Fatal bonds can be devastating late game, but until you get there I would just take so many more heroes over warlock.

The reason he is the "Worst" is he doesn't fit into the pub meta or the pro meta well. His skill are great, but he doesn't have any great home.

His real problem is that he requires the levels of a solo without being able to provide as many benefits of any of the key solo characters. He can be extremely effective in the right lineup, but he requires his own leveling as well as key heroes on his team to be leveled as well in order to provide the real aoe presence that a well thought out warlock team can support.

The only time he really gets any time to shine these days is if he gets solomid in pub games. Then he gets the farm and levels he needs to become really effective. There are just better picks for his role.

He's really cocky.

He's also boring to watch. When I watched him, he was on his phone like 50% of the time.

Someone should tell him being on the phone for a long time was cool in the 90's...

I like watching Fear. He describes things well when has a mic. Weshing is funny.
