I guess you're entitled to your opinion on the subject, but like I said before that doesn't really make it true.

Anyways it's clear this isn't going anywhere and you're just going to continue stating your opinion as fact so I'm done here.

The music she makes NOW may be terrible ( ever since she went the hip hop/R&B route), but in the (early) 90s it most definitely was not terrible.
I would say same goes for Madonna, musicwise she hasn't been relevant in ages.

No actually what you're saying is akin to saying the color red is blue. It's an uninformed opinion, and therefore worthless. Read up on singing, the mechanics of it, and how it may apply to someone like Mariah. I think Mumei can recommend a book or two. She does things with her voice that most people on the planet are incable of. This is not an opinion. You don't have to like it, but the fact of her ability is immutable.

This is like someone who knows nothing about astrophysics saying that the current research is wrong.

You thinking her music is terrible is a completely separate issue from you thinking she has no skill. One is a statement about your personal opinion over a matter of taste, something I don't really have any interest in changing; the other is a claim about a matter of fact. Your claim (Mariah doesn't have skill) was wrong, so that's what I'm disputing. I'd actually bother going into detail, but I don't really get the sense that you're actually interested in that.

And I suppose it is a wash if you are conceding the point about skill, but saying that it doesn't matter if she's skilled or not since you dislike her music, as I really don't care about that.

LOLOL at Mariah Carey having no skill. I'm not a fan of her music but even someone without ears would admit she's an excellent singer.
 
I'm glad Janelle Monae has been mentioned already. It truly is a crime that she doesn't get more plays. She had one of the best albums of 2010. Can't wait for the next.

These first two videos are basically extended looks at their voices and how much they excel at the basics and how their technique allows them to do insanely difficult stuff as well. The third video is more exclusively about Mariah's whistle register and how you're stupid if you think it is screaming or uncontrolled or somehow "shouldn't count." That might be editorializing a bit.

Gaga has a far far better voice than Madonna ever accomplished, even after she finally started vocal training for Evita. Talentless? Again, not even debatable. Leave this place.

I think even Phonomezer would admit, if he didn't happen to be in the middle of a hysterical stanning episode when the question was asked, that Gaga is a superior vocalist to Madonna and talented in that respect, as long as one stipulates that she's inferior in every other respect.

Now I await my incoming contradiction.

Oh please! Madonna had a huge influence on pop music in the 80´s. Comparing Gaga to her is insulting to Madonna. And yeah Gaga is talentless, and she tries to hard to be unique, but everything has been done before her, and i am not talking about a meat dress or a shitty hair style.

People age. Their vocal chords change. Have you heard recent performances by U2, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, the late Whitney, Cyndi Lauper, or anyone else who has been making music for decades?

It goes through ups-and-downs that seem to last years; 1990 - 96 were her best years; 97 - 01 were just a slow, long torturous road of getting worse and worse; 2002 was recovery; 2003 - 2005 was a bit of a renaissance vocally; 2006 was the beginning of a decline; 2007 - 2009 it got *bad* (that Michael Jackson funeral performance), and 2010 - now it's been in a recovery stage.

Compare 2009 and 2012, for instance. That's still not at 2003 - 2005 levels, but it's still great compared to three years ago, and better than anyone active not named Beyonce could do.
 
Gaga has tons of talent but for someone so early on her career it's not to her benefit that she's already starting to repeat herself (Judas = Bad Romance 2.0), let alone attempting to appropriate the styles of other well known contemporary artists.

There's been many a candidate. Let's see if she does indeed have the talent and more importantly the stamina and endurance to remain relevant for as long as Madonna has been.

For the time being, she is just one more pretender to the throne.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I'm not sure a Madonna or Michael Jackson is possible nowadays. The industry is too different for that to happen again.

But Gaga is really the only one (perhaps Beyonce) making any sort of run at the title.

I fucking -love- Mika. I have all his CDs, bought his concert vids at FYE when they still had them, and am still waiting for a third album :3 I even got a foreign singstar disc so I could have his songs on it....
 
I think now is the point where i'm really getting old. Never heard of this Mika dude before this thread. Googled some of his songs and don't even recognize one of them.
 
This has to be one of the worst threads ever. It's amazing how quickly it degenerated into horrible, horrible gifs.

As to the question in the OP. Never really listened to much from Mika, but I always did like Grace Kelly.
