Mark Rein: "I'd be shocked if Wii U doesn't do well." UE3 better than Zelda Demo.

Indeed. Just like that PS3 Kara demo. Very closed off. You can even see a the beginning of the demo of sprite metal "bars" in the door.

Anyway, I still think the Wii U will come out with impressive software, it has to. There is NO reason why we won't get anything unless Nintendo really is skimping that much, but considering Rein is having a boner for it, I'll assume he can showcase his product well on it.

Mark Rein's boner is indeed a desirable asset in this tech driven industry we love so much.

So this....

... is technically superior to THIS?!

Sorry, my EYES must be "sucking Nintendo's cock" then, as you put it. Art aside, Twilight Princess is a high level of technical superiority away from the tech demo.

one has self shadowing models, the other does not.

The lighting in that 2000 tech demo is atrocious.

The Zelda demo looked good because it was a small closed demo area with canned animation. Not because of some advanced tech behind it.

I'll still say what I've been saying about that Zelda tech demo: it has better lighting than any game I've seen to date.

Until Nintendo comes back and changes their tune, it's probably a safer bet to take their word for it over wishful thinking. Just saying.

Take their word for what?, nothing even close to specific is being said in that quote. The word "dramatically" is a completely subjective term. You don't know what Miyamoto considers a dramatic increase in performance. You also don't know what kind of performance to expect from other next gen consoles. So how does that comment tell us that WiiU won't be competitive with other next gen console graphically?

Interested in the reason for Mark Rein's change of tune since Cliffy B is usually the Nintendo fan. Maybe just pimping the UE3 games (Arkham City/Aliens Colonial Marines) or is their another motive?

Mark Rein will pimp anything that will make him money

Rein's comments about UE3/4 and next gen development have me slightly worried. It sounded like he was saying you could develop a multiplatform game targetted to the lower end consoles by using UE3, but that next-gen only you'd use UE4. Where does WiiU come into that equation?

If thats limited to UE3 and becomes a success, does that mean Xbox 720/PS4 would also be limited to UE3 for multiplatform titles to keep the development costs down, rather than being forced to use two sets of tools? Or are UE3/4 tools designed to work well and scale between them so you can use both in developing one game?

He is under NDA in regards to UE4 at the moment. That's all it means. Nothing to read between any lines. Yet.

Why are we even talking about the Zelda demo? The Japanese Garden demo is Nintendo's official technology showcase.

Well, the version running on the show floor at least. The one in their presentation was much more bland, lighting-wise.

I found nothing impressing about it honestly. Didn't even look like Link cast shadows on himself.

What?

Seriously, watch the demo again. How can you notice notice the self shadows? The ambient occlusion on Link is one of the more impressive things in that demo.

Everyone thought I was mad when I said I was waiting for the Wii U version of Arkham City. I'm glad that it sounds like it'll be worth the wait.

You are mad, just double dip like I'm gonna do.

And double dipping on Batman: AC is not the worse thing I did this year. Buying COD: MW3 when i don't play MP is much worse. Doesn't even have the charm of MW.

All this does is make me wonder if we will ever see Rein support Wii U with software.

Never doubted one of his engines would be on the machine, he loves money. I just have always doubted he would be willing to try and build and audience on it and this makes it sound like he isn't going to do that.

Yes I watched a good quality version now and indeed there's self shadowing going on and even AO might be there in some form. It's impressive, but still looks quite weird to me somehow. Maybe it is the soft quality of the shadows. Link really looks low contrast in comparison to some current games that completely blacken parts of objects/characters.

Not sure if it's better than anything I've seen, but I too have always said the big draw with that Zelda tech demo is the lighting looks frick'n fantastic. It's the standout part of the demo especially at night.

That would be the AOs doing. Ultra contrasty shadows are artistically nice but they're also neither realistic or particularly expensive to implement. That soft self shadowing is what we want to see.

You could've had it for $15 via Best Buy last week, so yeah, you're nuts waiting for a U version.

Knowing how the game is I can't even imagine any use of the tablet screen that's going to make the U version worth the wait. At most I can picture holding the tablet up at the screen to "scan" the environment for clues, but that's just lame.

Umm are you serious? Now you can have the shark repellent on the upad ready to go at a moment's notice.

one has self shadowing models, the other does not.

I've always told people they do it wrong when arguing about that scene.

That scene is technically at a level it would be impossible for a large world game like Twilight Princess to be at. TP Link looks a hell of a lot better than that 90's CG reject. That's just because their art teams got really good at 3D instead of going into it in a pure polygon sense like that tech demo.

There really shouldn't be a question that TP Link looked better, but that was purely in a "We understand making models a lot better now than we did then." way. The other has tons and tons of poly's, shadows, and in-depth animation. Just like the Link tech demo last year. High on polies, fancy lighting and shadowing, and animation.

Link given proper dev may look a hell of a lot better.

Pre-baked mainly.

Still likely what we are going to have next gen too. Not purely pre-baked, but approximations that get close enough to fool the eye.

Realtime GI is one of the big features of UE4 if I remember correctly.

Hawt!

I know that was one of the pretties they showed off in the Samaritan tech demo, but that was using some astronomically high ALU setup.

Part of the reason I said approximation. Hadn't been keeping up with everything they are achieving in UE4. Though I did read they are achieving it on a single Kepler. Which is impressive in its own right.

Then it shouldn't be a problem for you to provide a list of those games with GI, I'd imagine.

Pre baked GI is commonplace, it's rare for a game not to have it. Most UE3 games, Source games, Uncharted 2/3, KZ2/3, Sonic from 2008, BF3, Crysis 2...

There was no indication the Zelda demo was using realtime GI.
