They have done you a favor good sir, and buying the Fire brigade (which is a fantastic build) isn't a problem.

The problem starts after you finish it and you're hungry for more...

That has been my problem. Once Town Hall arrives (Fri estimated, I think it will be Thursday honestly. It better be. Dammit.), I am going to take a break from buying sets for a LONG time. I have spent so much money, and I dont want to burn out on Lego so quickly.

Haha! VIP points now show. I know I was an annoying ass asking about it all the time for the last two days, but I am used to things like that being instant. 414 points for my first order from Lego. Now I kinda wish I did Fire Brigade from there, but it was cheaper through Toys R Us when I ordered.

I just got a 10% off coupon with the Spring catalog, and I'm thinking of using it for the Mini Modulars, or possibly the Joust set. I know there are several people here that have the Mini Modulars, how does it compare the the full-sized modular builds? Is it fun to build, or tedious with all the small pieces?

VIP points are worth it in the longer run (particularly with double VIP), but it's still hard to justify the additional cost sometimes.

Glad it all worked out, too. Patience is a virtue, eh? ;)

Minis are amazing, but it's more because the micro-scale techniques used are VERY cool and creative. Tedious? Not at all. Better than the full-sized? Completely different animals. :)

It's a totally unique experience of "a-ha!" moments during the build. Every piece has a very specific purpose, so as you build it, you start to really understand and respect the design decisions made by the Lego designer. I would say that the set is aimed at the adults who appreciate the technique and the artsy side of Lego over the playability, though.

Been looking at the brick lists for the Death Star II and the Millenium Falcon UCS.

A good chunk of the pieces I already have, but there are obviously the odd pieces here and there that I would need to really hunt down.

I know that the radar dish on the Falcon is elusive and expensive, but what else is rare? I could explain that the Falcon had lost the dish as it attacked the second Death Star.

I am only just thinking of doing this. I am not quite that crazy yet, but curious as to what are the harder pieces to come by. And many things look like a color replacement would be fine since they are hidden in the super structure.

The dish that came with the UCS Falcon is rare, but this is simply a version of the standard grey dish with Falcon-specific printing. Getting a non-printed/blank one will only run about a buck on Bricklink if memory serves.

I know another rare piece is the grey mast rigging that is used over the engines in the rear. Using black is a very valid option here. I've read of people painting the black riggings grey as well, or just leaving them as-is. I think the black riggings only run like a quarter on BL.

Seems to me there's a third rare piece as well, one you'd not expect - I remember a total of 5 rare pieces the last time I looked, 1x radar, 2x riggings, and 2x of something else. There was a good replacement option here as well.

That was my problem but I am in love with the Slave I. I've been playing with it constantly when I am at home. I don't think anything else in that price range will have the same fun value so I'm not tempted right now. I'm going to save up for maybe the haunted house.

Christ. My wife just started talking about how she figured out a way for me to display Tower Bridge if I ordered it at some point, not knowing that I just order Town Hall.

GAH! I told her, and then she said "I am sorry for putting the idea in your head." It is like she is secretly wanting that set but will not admit to it.

How long before that disappears? Now I feel passive aggressive pressure from the wife to get it. She is still steadfast in me NEVER getting the SSD due to its size.

In my house, if one of us gives the green light the other knows to take it and run with it! :D

Haha, yeah. I'm definitely taking a break. Between the smaller sets I've been getting with my son off and on, and this today, I also have an ipad coming Friday. I beat the crap out of my wallet, time to let it recover.

Oh, I am running with it. BIG TIME! But I need time to pass after ordering Town Hall so she does not shoot me. And I keep my credit card only for emergencies. I was explaining double VIP and almost had her. But I think when Toys R Us does their next big sale that is go time.

I finally got around to building the Apple Tree House. It's a pretty straight forward set with lots of long bricks and slope pieces. Since most pieces are a similar type, the building time went quickly. One thing I'm sad about is none of my vehicles will fit in the garage.

Guess you just need to make more vehicles. :)

Here's pieces that I found were rare or expensive, and what I swapped them with.

3456 1 qty 6 x 14 dark red plate replaced with regular red
28 qty 4095 6.6L bar replaced with 28 qty 63965 6L bar
60 qty 4593 md stone levers replaced with 60 qty 298c03 in light gray
21 qty 6564 md stone wedge 3x2 right replaced with 63 plate 3x2 right (43722)
21 qty 6565 md stone wedge 3x2 left replaced with 63 plate 3x2 left (43723)
1 50990px3 MdStone Round Dish 10 x 10 Inverted with Spokes Pattern replaced with 1 50990 dish
2 mdstone 47996 boat rigging in black (may use revell grey model paint)

It's hard to find 21 of each 3x2 wedge pieces above, but you can just build three plate pieces to make one wedge.

The Technic Brick 5 x 5 Right Angle with Holes (32555) are expensive in any color really, but they're interior pieces that won't be seen. Same with the 47 Technic Brick 1 x 16 with Holes (3703) in dark bluish gray. I was able to get all the required 1 x 16 pieces in dark bluish gray from Lego themselves for about half of what it would cost from bricklink though.

In six months they'll probably have double points again. That's about the only thing stopping me from going to the store tomorrow and getting the town hall, gives me something to look forward to (still have cafe corner, fire brigade, pet shop and tower bridge to build)

I don't know if anybody saw these videos before but Gizmodo took a trip to the lego factory a few years ago.

http://gizmodo.com/legotrip

Plus a look at their vault which has copies of all the old sets.

http://gizmodo.com/5018990/lego-secret-vault-contains-all-sets-in-history

There is a documentary on Nat Geo on LEGO as well. Can't remember if it was in the Megastructures series or something else, they focused mainly on the new factory in Poland if memory serves.

It's probably on YouTube.

It's probably on YouTube.

It was on a show called Ultimate Factories.

Also, I finished the Fire Brigade last night. 1st floor went a hell of a lot quicker than the 2nd floor/roof combo, and wasn't nearly as cool. There were several fun parts, but a lot of repetitive parts too (that's to be expected with a building).

I started out just dumping all the small pieces into a dish and then dumping all the big pieces into a cardboard box (that's all I had). I dug around for a while, and then later did some minor sorting during the build. I took out all the grey straight brights, since there were a ton of them for the 1st floor, as well as all the smooth plates and put them in piles on the table, and that was the extent.

I was planning on taking a few pictures of it before I disassemble it, but PhoncipleBone blew me out of the water even before I jumped in. :(

Welp, in an effort to spend my bonus money on Lego this year, I have the following sets on order:

9493 X-wing Starfighter
4195 Queen Anne's Revenge
10216 Winter Village Bakery
5764 Rescue Robot
3178 Seaplane
5771 Hillside House
8882 Power Functions XL-Motor
88000 Power Functions AAA Battery.
8043 Technic Excavator
8110 Technic Unimog 400

Free shipping!!! And double VIP points. Good timing IMHO.

The gf and I also bought these two at the Lego store the other day (also double VIP):

10231 Shuttle Expedition
5770 Lighthouse Island

And after all of that I'll still have a few hundred to spend on Bricklink getting some parts I need for MOC's and general playing around, like lots of minifigure parts. Yeah, it's been a good week! I'm gonna have tons of Lego to put together real soon. The gf and I are already planning out how to expand our sorting system, because it's gonna have to expand after all of this...

I picked up the Fire Brigade on Monday since it is going out of print soon and I saw it was out of stock on the LEGO.com store. Started building it last night and finished up the fire truck, but I had two pieces missing in the end. I went through all of my "1" pieces multiple times and never did find the windshield or the little "claw" piece for attaching the red light on top. I am going to wait to finish the set before I order the missing parts. :(

On a similar note, if I was interested in picking up a modular set before it went out of print and/or finding one that was viewed as the best deal. Which modular would GAF recommend?

Fire Brigade will be going out of print soon.

Lego Store guy told me Grand Emporium would be next after that, don't know if that is accurate.

Definitely go with the Fire Brigade. They are sold out online, the Amazon price has been rising, and my LEGO store only had two on the shelf.

PhoncipleBone, you're obviously a creative guy who likes to play with his sets as opposed to just displaying them.

So I'm wondering why you want the SSD over the Death Star?

I wouldn't say I play with the sets, but I get bored quickly so I pose figures on all my sets and leave them for a week or so. Perhaps the Death Star would be good then. Easier to find space for and my wife won't lament then.

Really though, I don't like the look of the death star. The ssd just looks sexy though.

I would agree with this 100%

I just got off the phone with LEGO customer service and I have to say they have some of the best reps I've ever dealt with. I received my shipment from the online store yesterday and one of the boxes was completely smashed in. They were very accommodating about sending me a replacement. While on the phone the lady asked about where I lived, what I did for a living and why I haven't turned my passion for LEGO into a career. I also have a receipt where the double VIP point's have been processed yet and it's been 10 days. I inquired about it and she said as a gesture of good will she will go ahead and apply the points to my account and not to worry if they double post. I wish I would have said yes to the survey at the start of the call to give her a stellar review.

I agree as well. However, I have so many loose SW minifigs that I think the DS is the perfect 'diorama' to house them. Also, the SSD set is so new, I'm hoping for a wicked sale at some point in the next few years of its lifespan. I'll jump when the time comes.

Just do what I did with the star wars figures. Have them invade the town! I plan on having Vader force choking the mayor of Town Hall next week. :)

I only buy SW sets, so the minifigs are all lined up on my bedroom dresser at the moment. They need a home. Girlfriend just wants to put them all in her mouth because they're so tiny. Don't ask.

Star Wars minifigs seem expensive. I've only managed to buy Chewie for my UCS falcon, since he was the cheapest one. I need to flip some of the extra parts I bought for the rest, or maybe the physical instruction book from Lego.

So that Fire Brigade will be my first 'major' set build. I have the added challenge of a 3 year old joining me. :)

Anyhow, any tips for the build?

Don't let the 3 year old build at the same time. Seriously. It is a very detail oriented set, and having your child helping will make things difficult. Even the truck in it is complicated yet small.

Haha, yeah I wasn't planning on that. He tends to like just playing/building with random pieces while I work through a set. So I'll probably just pull another set's pieces aside that will keep him occupied. He's mostly just interested in 'playing Legos' with dad at this point. :)

I'm actually just talking about tips in general. Like I said, this is way bigger than any other one I've worked with.

I will get bashed for this, but don't mix the pieces. Just keep the bags separated and things will go smooth. Also, make sure you have good light since so many shades look the same in the instructions in poor light (my apartment).
