Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

Why do skeletons and demons in this game have to wear so much purple? There is nothing scary about purple.

I feel like the quality of models is going down since launch. There aren't releasing models with unique details like Tide, Furion, Shake et al anymore.

Uh, define "unique details".

And why would you say recent heroes are missing these "unique details"? I haven't seen Shadow Demon in action, yet, but let's just look at Bane.

1) He leaves a trail of shadowy goopy shit as he moves.
2) The same shadowy goopy shit is dripping off his hands.

How is that not a "unique detail", but a cape of leaves is?
 
Shadow Demon looks alright. Would be nice if he matched his concept a bit more with some added smoke/particles around his head.
 
Anyone else having trouble downloading the game? I got into the beta last week, and it won't finish downloading. It just stays stuck at 79%. Also, why do I have Dota 2 and Dota 2 Test on my games list?

Dota 2 test is updated before the regular client. For testing purposes.

Valid point. Yet another purple hero though haha.

I'm just trying to make the point that I feel like the heroes that they're releasing each week are progressively shifting to a new, more WC3/WoW-esque art style (chunky, weird colors, rehashes) than those that launched with the beta. I think this is pretty apparent.

For further example, Silencer is very similar to DK (red and gold armor) and Spirit Breaker is giant, disproportionate (even in size to the other heroes), and neon blue.

Maybe it's what the community at large wants. I'm just voicing my preference for what we were first exposed to.
 
How am I supposed to check if people are Roshing without checking if they're Roshing now? :P
This and being able to hear Axe Counter Helixing camps were my biggest gripes with that bug, so stupid.

Looks like the Copy Pasted Alchemist Ogre head for the right version, kinda similar.
 
Hmm, just realized that the fog of war fix might have some implications on my play, I'm afraid that I have been a bit more careless when farming out on lanes when I know that I can hear some stuff through the fog.

It's gonna be a pretty large "buff" to furion for example...
 
Was hoping for more heroes, but I'm thankful there was atleast a patch :P.

SD portrait looks neato, don't think I'll be able to see much more than that tonight though.

So this new patch has 6.74 changes? It said it updated it to 6.74 parity... unless I'm misunderstanding it.
 
Working on adding in the tutorials for one thing. The patches recently have done nothing but fix some bugs and maybe add a hero, it feels like the development is just crawling along at the moment.

Well it's a beta that we were simply invited to, I don't really expect anything. It would be one thing if it was post-launch and we had all invested $60.

I'm actually worried that they're rushing the heroes (as evidenced by my posts above). Slowing down the hero release schedule might be a good thing in that regard, and it would be a nice treat to save (at least a little bit) for the post-launch crowd.

They're hardly rushing heroes, nothing seen here is necessarily final. The longer they have heroes out in the open, the sooner everything from bugs to visuals get smoothed out.

I'm not seeing the color-coded threat.

Silencer having the same color pattern as Dragon Knight means nothing, at all. There's like 110 heroes, I don't expect them to all be color different just for the sake to be (else...we'll go to downright ugly territory like Pink and Green combo).

Spirit Breaker being huge is not any different from Pudge being huge. He's a ghost...shaman...thingy, so having a neon-teal-blue translucense is not out of character nor a proof of WoWishment.

Like it or not, DotA1 is entirely based on WC3 assets and units ; saying DotA2 heroes looks like WC3 or WoW (being the same universe) is kind of a weak complaint. DotA2 doesn't have the luxury of HoN or LoL, as all of its heroes are already created in WC3 Dota. You can't simply totally change their style from DotA1 to DotA2 for the sake of changing their style.
 
Honestly Valve have done a fantastic job of updating the heroes from their Dota 1 counterparts. They retain the same basic feel and general silhouette of the figures while giving them their own personal flair.

It's very impressive that I can look at any Dota 2 hero and instantly know its Dota 1 counterpart.
 
just played with Morphling for the first time and he is my new favorite hero. <3
I only need to understand how to use properly those swap abilities, in the last game I just used Q - W and ulti.

That's what struck me the most about the Dota 2 models. Though, I do like when Valve veers further from Dota 1 then not. Tidehunter, for example, looks absolutely amazing in 2. I only wish they too more liberty in the designs than they currently are.

Bounty hunter trash talks riki when he kills him, and talks to him like a bro when they're on the same team. Same deal with omni and dragon knight.

I assume both those lines refer to Lone druid. He's the only other shapeshifter in the game, well I guess besides dragon knight.

It may not matter to you, but I'm always interested in the games' lore, so presence of this unknown brother really intriguing me. Also, I don't see any reason for his family member to be shapeshifter as well.

Play co-op vs. bots on test client if you want to actually get into a game in decent time. I set mine to unfair and got in within a few minutes.

He's a very well animated model, the way he moves is just like eredar in wc3.

First time really using him, he seems to do an incredible amount of damage, but very flimsy.

For those more experienced in dota, what are his laning counters?

What are his team fight counters?

I'm assuming pugna would be good for team fight counters. Puck with the new phase shift might be able to hold a lane against him. I'm guessing invoker would be good as well?

I'm just really expecting to see this guy picked in AP all the time like invoker is and I'd like to know how to beat him.

He's like OD in the sense that if both players are of equal skill, SD will win the lane in a 1v1. SD is somewhat hindered by OD though, as OD's range isn't high enough where the illusions get a ton of hits in, and his int-stealing properties destroy him. If OD gets ulti'd, he can banish himself and iirc it runs the duration of the purge. Invoker doesn't really fare well against SD though. Team fight-wise, it's simply a matter of a stun and focus fire. VS ofc is a good choice b/c of her swap, as well as heroes like Lycan (if u wait for him to disrupt someone else) and CK.
