next gen no one going to see a big jump in graphics its all going to be us nick picking
I can guarantee GAF is going to be nitpicking at the differences in IQ. Can't wait for the DF Wii U/PS4/Xbox Fusion comparison articles.

It's that case man. That case. It's too small to dissipate heat. That's the only thing that makes me think this will be a 'Dreamcast' style console (noticeably more powerful than current gen, but noticeably less powerful than the gen it will technically belong to). Of course, that's just my speculation. The case design could change wildly between now and release or they might have some awesome cooling solution.
Actually, the case size isn't a problem.
In fact, a smaller case is a good thing.
It allows for the heat to exit through the system even faster.
If you look at the E3 models, the case is covered in vents on the side and back.

It will likely have intake fans on the side and output fans on the back (and even a small vent on top), which means that air travel will be super quick, and the heat won't be able to stay inside the system.[/QUOTE]
Interesting, never saw Wii U from its backside/underside.
And I doubt the Wii U is still going to be the same as the one we saw back at E3 2011. Reggie did say it was "just a box" in the interviews.

And you can bet that the case design will change for E3 to accommodate this problem even more.
I'm really not sure it works like that. Smaller cases are not a good thing where cooling and heat dissipation are concerned, they're quite the opposite in fact.Actually, the case size isn't a problem.

It will need vents & fans aplenty if it's to be a powerful machine but I still think the case will need to be bigger. If you look at the E3 models, the case is covered in vents on the side and back.

Back side looks like power supply vent

It has an external power supply, so that can't be it.
We also have to take into account that those boxes likely weren't even used to run any software.
I believe most E3 demos were still running on PC Dev Kits.
So if they ran into problems with heat, they definitely changed the design.
Why does the Wii U currently look so plain?
I really hope they change the design, not only for heat reasons but aesthetic reasons. It just doesn't stand out.
I thought the Ubisoft roundtable demo with the Ghost Recon and the Freaks game were on legit early Wii-U hardware?
Cuz the Wii was plain, and it's what people like these days (see Apple)

It's hard to say, since you never see the console.
The controllers (including the Wii U Tab) are plugged into the floor.

How did the Wii have style? It was a parallelogram white box with squared edges
This new Wii-U reminds a little of 360

Oh man, that two player real-time enemy director is so cool.![]()
Actually, since they WERE plugging in, they definitely couldn't be using real units, since the Wii U doesn't have an extra HDMI Out port.
Let's pretend..hypothetically speaking....that the Wii U was dramatically less powerful than the 720/PS4. Now the Wii U could end up being the PS2 of this generation like the above poster said. But this is all hypothetical...
If you show a third party game to a gamer and asked which one is the definitive version:
A) The slightly better graphics version or B) The version that takes full advantage of an innovative controller
Which do you think multi-console gamers would pick as the definitive version of that 3rd party game? I think most gamers are dumb and would take slightly better graphics over amazing controller features.
Iwata and Nintendo are banking on the idea that gamers will buy the Wii U version of games cause of the controller...but Nintendo had banked on gamers to buy the Wii versions of 3rd party games cause of controller and that didn't pan out most of the time. People went for graphics over controller on most third party games.
Third party games have to have the best graphics on a nintendo console, or third party sales on a nintendo system will always be the least compared to competitors. That's only reason why Wii U third party sales will be good in the first year or two. Because Wii U will have the definitive versions of 360/PS3 games for the first year or two (unless Nintendo shocks us with a system that is on par with next xbox/ps4)
So then the Wii-U's on demo at E3 were just hollow white shells with nothing inside...great
It's actually not uncommon.
The Wiis in 2006 were that way as well.

So... if the real system wasn't even demoed at E3 2011, that was all they had to show us what they hoped for the system was those demos and the shell?
Really...
frostbyte said:So if you stole one from E3, it would be a worthless plastic shell?
There goes that option![]()
Who's lining up for the Wii U? I probably am. Although no-one lines up for stuff in my town so I guess I'll just sit outside my videogame store like an idiot for a few hours with coffee, my 3DS and some random nerds I've never met.

How is this new to you? The hardware for most demos at E3 and such is in GIANT (very dull looking) boxes.So... if the real system wasn't even demoed at E3 2011, that was all they had to show us what they hoped for the system was those demos and the shell?

Still depends on Price and Launch/Post Launch lineup.
I lined up for a Wii back in tha day even when GAF told me it would be shit and that you could walk into on launch day and pick one up
I didn't see the demo stations up close or anything
Well, it would be a pretty bitching door stop.

I definitely agree on the console design, they need to make it look "cooler", more of a industrial sleek-ness, instead of just a plain dull flat box. Smart vent hole placements and intake/outtake fans could also go into the "look" of the design to make it more visually attractive. Just me though.
I already have my pre-order with EB down with Pikmin, DSII and NG3, so I have to pick it up somehow, haha.
at least you have midnight releases... here in italy very few store do it, and i honestly can't remember any store doing it last gen in my City (that has more then 400k people)
Tell me you sold that shit for a healthy profit.
Wasn't the EB placeholder price $999?
