Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

It's that case man. That case. It's too small to dissipate heat. That's the only thing that makes me think this will be a 'Dreamcast' style console (noticeably more powerful than current gen, but noticeably less powerful than the gen it will technically belong to). Of course, that's just my speculation. The case design could change wildly between now and release or they might have some awesome cooling solution.

Actually, the case size isn't a problem.
In fact, a smaller case is a good thing.
It allows for the heat to exit through the system even faster.
If you look at the E3 models, the case is covered in vents on the side and back.

It will likely have intake fans on the side and output fans on the back (and even a small vent on top), which means that air travel will be super quick, and the heat won't be able to stay inside the system.
And you can bet that the case design will change for E3 to accommodate this problem even more.

It all come down to what are the games likes, if Big N can get 3rd partys on Wii U first -_- but knowing them they just sit on they ass and say we waiting to see what happens or its was a test game -_-

Interesting, never saw Wii U from its backside/underside.

And I doubt the Wii U is still going to be the same as the one we saw back at E3 2011. Reggie did say it was "just a box" in the interviews.

I'd say the design won't change much. The console may slim out, the controller will stay the same but with the addition of clickable circle pads, analog triggers and the return of the grips from the pre-E3 design. Maybe a few colors on the showfloor and that CCP concept I was talking about earlier on.

I don't think heat dissipation works that way. It sounds like it makes sense, but I don't think it works that way.

I'm really not sure it works like that. Smaller cases are not a good thing where cooling and heat dissipation are concerned, they're quite the opposite in fact.

It will need vents & fans aplenty if it's to be a powerful machine but I still think the case will need to be bigger.

Back side looks like power supply vent

The size it's an issue for these machines.
It's all about heat displacement. Add to that the Wii U isn't containing an HDD or a Power Supply, and the size definitely isn't bad.

Back side looks like power supply vent

It has an external power supply, so that can't be it.

furthermore that case if from the first build we saw at E3, and we know for sure that the system got a spec bump in the last months, so even if the case at E3 was that small that doesn't mean that the final case will be of the same size.

also you taking out of the equation the online (speaking of titles like CoD)

if nintendo supports communities like mario kart system wide (as it was originally decided for the 3DS) i think that would be a good system seller for this kind of games.

It looks from that picture to have a very small fan. It would have to run at a very high and noisy RPM to get a powerful console cooled.

We also have to take into account that those boxes likely weren't even used to run any software.
I believe most E3 demos were still running on PC Dev Kits.

So if they ran into problems with heat, they definitely changed the design.

If so, I'd say it'd only be the Zelda and Bird demos, the less-er demanding ones were probably left to run on the U itself, Chase Mii and Battle Mii used Wii assets in 720p, IIRC

Why does the Wii U currently look so plain?

I really hope they change the design, not only for heat reasons but aesthetic reasons. It just doesn't stand out.

I thought the Ubisoft roundtable demo with the Ghost Recon and the Freaks game were on legit early Wii-U hardware?

Cuz the Wii was plain, and it's what people like these days (see Apple)

To be honest I wouldn't want something to grab my attention (well, it's nice every now and then), but it looks nice. Just basic, no unnecessary bells and whistles that make it look like it came from 6890.

Yeah, the Ubisoft demos were running on the Wii U with one uPad and one CCPro controller.

I still feel the Wii had a certain style to it. This has nothing. It's round and obtuse. It isn't even an understated style; it's just plain boring.

How did the Wii have style? It was a parallelogram white box with squared edges

This new Wii-U reminds a little of 360

I guess it just appeals to me aesthetically. I don't like this Wii U design though.

Oh man, that two player real-time enemy director is so cool. :D

Agreed. I saw that and was thinking of how Left 4 Dead would be if you could strategically spawn zombie hordes against your friends.

Nintendo x Valve has just got to happen one day!

Let's pretend..hypothetically speaking....that the Wii U was dramatically less powerful than the 720/PS4. Now the Wii U could end up being the PS2 of this generation like the above poster said. But this is all hypothetical...

If you show a third party game to a gamer and asked which one is the definitive version:

A) The slightly better graphics version or B) The version that takes full advantage of an innovative controller

Which do you think multi-console gamers would pick as the definitive version of that 3rd party game? I think most gamers are dumb and would take slightly better graphics over amazing controller features.

Iwata and Nintendo are banking on the idea that gamers will buy the Wii U version of games cause of the controller...but Nintendo had banked on gamers to buy the Wii versions of 3rd party games cause of controller and that didn't pan out most of the time. People went for graphics over controller on most third party games.

Third party games have to have the best graphics on a nintendo console, or third party sales on a nintendo system will always be the least compared to competitors. That's only reason why Wii U third party sales will be good in the first year or two. Because Wii U will have the definitive versions of 360/PS3 games for the first year or two (unless Nintendo shocks us with a system that is on par with next xbox/ps4)

I just don't think we'll end up with a situation like this current generation. The Wii was VASTLY less powerful than the HD twins. They weren't even in the same league. Even though the Wii was selling like hotcakes, the devs couldn't even consider porting their games to the system without major sacrifices. This wasn't the case with the previous generation. The PS2 was powerful enough to hold it's own and devs took advantage of that with tons of games and lots of support. I'm pretty sure that if the Wii was closer in spec and function to the HD twins, the generation would have turned out differently. As it was, devs didn't want to sacrifice that much when there were systems out there capable of doing what they wanted to do.

If the Wii U comes out and sells like hotcakes ala Wii or PS2, you can bet there won't be much of a problem with them getting support even if the Wii U is a little weaker than the next Xbox or Playstation. If they're close enough, then a lot of players won't need to upgrade to get the best games like they did this generation. If someone wanted to play Resident Evil 5 and only owned a Wii, then they were SOL. If Resident Evil 6 makes it to their system, then they're less likely to worry about it assuming quality is relatively equal across the board.

So... if the real system wasn't even demoed at E3 2011, that was all they had to show us what they hoped for the system was those demos and the shell?

Really...

It's actually not uncommon.
The Wiis in 2006 were that way as well.

this.

plus it's really absurd to take in consideration the "console" we saw at E3 when even Nintendo said "oh, that's just a box, forget about it"

and anyhow the final specs were far from decided and after the bump they just got nintendo might have been forced to redesign the system case anyway.

Who's lining up for the Wii U? I probably am. Although no-one lines up for stuff in my town so I guess I'll just sit outside my videogame store like an idiot for a few hours with coffee, my 3DS and some random nerds I've never met.

It was all for a conceptual purpose.
They wanted to show the potential of the dual screen approach on consoles.

So if you stole one from E3, it would be a worthless plastic shell?

There goes that option :P

Well, it would be a pretty bitching door stop.

Still depends on Price and Launch/Post Launch lineup.

I definitely agree on the console design, they need to make it look "cooler", more of a industrial sleek-ness, instead of just a plain dull flat box. Smart vent hole placements and intake/outtake fans could also go into the "look" of the design to make it more visually attractive. Just me though.

I'll be there on Day 1 no matter what. Was on the fence about doing it again, but it's tradition now so screw it!

at least you have midnight releases... here in italy very few store do it, and i honestly can't remember any store doing it last gen in my City (that has more then 400k people)

How is this new to you? The hardware for most demos at E3 and such is in GIANT (very dull looking) boxes.

I lined up for a Wii back in tha day even when GAF told me it would be shit and that you could walk into on launch day and pick one up

Not just smart vent hole placements, we need SPEED STRIPES on this bitch! It'll appeal to the dudebro demographic and everyone'll be saying "WII U IS SO DAMN COOL, LOOK AT THOSE SPEED STRIPES"

YEAHHHHHHH

I already have my pre-order with EB down with Pikmin, DSII and NG3, so I have to pick it up somehow, haha.

Wasn't the EB placeholder price $999?

We don't have 'em either, store opens at 8AM or so, so I'll be down there by 6:30 or so to beat any possible line-up.

People's Wii's are collecting dust? (No surprise) I'm still using mine a lot for VC and some Metroid or DKC:R.

$599. Either a stab at the PS3 or just a placeholder, I saw the cashiers computer when I preordered Pikmin and it was under $9999, so...

Ahhh memories, back then i worked at Target and i had to close the night before the Wii launched and it was freakin cold out with rain/sleet and i said fuck it anyways and just stayed camping outside my store after we finally got out. It was really cool, all night it was just me and like 8 or 9 other people camping in the cold. They we're awesome to, all i had was my jacket so by 1am i was getting numb and a couple next to me gave me a blanket.

So anyways, it stayed at a head count of 10 people all night until about 6am when another 50 people just came out of no where for the Wii and i knew we only had 30. By the time i got out with my Wii the Best Buy across from us still had probably over 100 people waiting to get the Wii and i just yelled at them and pointed to my Wii(HAR HAR HAR) and walked away. It was definitely one of the coolest camp outs i have ever had for a new console and or game.

It was great, it was raining... early in the morning when I normally am not anywhere close to being awake... people gathered around, all playing on their Nintendo DS' and PSPs (rofl)

Did manage to snag a copy of Twilight Princess for Wii, but couldn't play it for months haha
