Mass Effect 3 SPOILER THREAD: LOTS OF SPECULATION FROM EVERYONE

Where are the people defending the ending? It's a lot better here without everyone thinking the same way.

I was defending the ending at some point in time, but then I realised that without any announcement for a magical end changing DLC then I can't defend it in any way. I'm still holding out for the Indoc Theory, however farfetched it is, but it is utter shite if there is no continuation in the form of DLC. Also, if there is, I still won't be all that happy because EA will, yet again, be taking more of my money for content that should have been in the goddamn game in the first place, and means we will be expecting similar moves from them in the future (Dead Space 3 probably next?)

and I came to the realization that I like it more than Star Wars. That's why I'm so upset Bioware fucked it up at the last second, because I think the universe is fantastic and I hate that all the endings irrevocably destroy it.

Yeah.

It's one thing to turn out the lights on a great universe, one that you've spent 100 hours or so with, learning about, exploring and growing relationships in.

It's another thing entirely to set the entire thing on fire, then wonder why people are upset.

Mass Effect is a series that has great production values and tons of work and effort put into it.

But honestly, if you compare the world-building, dialogue, characterization, and general writing to RPG sourcebooks it would probably pale in comparison, much less actual novels and literature.

It may be great writing for a game, but is it great writing in its own right? I think you can argue the cinematography leads to it being comparable to visual media such as films or TV shows, and argue that the emotion there makes ME great. But the writing? Please.

If they do come out with the ending DLC, just watch it on youtube

You'd kind of have to had played the series from the 1st one to see why it was so terrible, and why so many (by and large the overwhelming majority) of fans are severely upset at it.
I should've phrased that post a bit better and had more of it in the past tense, I definitely agree the ending is horrible and that it did the series injustice, but I had avoided reading too much to not spoil myself ahead of time and be predisposed to expect the worst beyond statements of "it's bad".

Yeah...I'm on my second run as a renegade and Wrex is already at my throat for deleting the genophage data in 2. It's going to be hard to kill Mordin and Wrex. :'(

I like that how these moments such as Mordin's and Wrex's deaths or Tali's or Legion's have a much greater impact than the kid. It just further demonstrates the ineptitude of Walters and Hudson.

I don't have the greatest breadth of experience with video games, but ME3 definitely has the best writing out of any game I've ever played. It's heavy handed at times and artificial sounding, but a lot of it is golden and they continue the trend of good characterization and universe building very well. In the context of what the story revolves around, it's done beautifully well.

Just finished it.

I thought the ending was good. It worked for me.

I also loved the ending of Battlestar Galactica.

I've always been the type of dude who likes sci fi a bit bleak, with just a touch of hope. Happy endings work for me in most stories, but I've always felt that sci fi works best when everything doesn't come together in a crisp box with a bow on top. I don't think I'm alone either, given how many people love flicks like ESB, Pitch Black, Alien, etc. etc..

I even liked the post-credits epilogue. After it was over, I went back into the multiplayer, which I'm still thoroughly addicted to.

ME3: GOTY 2012.

Thane was going to die anyway. :\

Imo, they didn't changed everything, just provided a reason for it. And it's not like the Catalyst is that different from the Reapers, he's just like a personification of them.

It would be cool if they would have just given a basic reason for the reapers, just don't personify the most evil thing ever as a little ghost boy who will now lecture you about stuff that doesn't make sense.

It should have been a really informative conversation like the one with Sovereign on virmire, only this time Sheppard gets some straight answers from the now threatened reapers.

We need to get you playing some Obsidian games if you think ME3 has the best writing. It's got good character stories and interaction but that's about as much credit as I'll give it in the writing department.

Now that I really think about it the ME series might be a bit better than FFVI and FFVII. I really feel that TIM and Kai Leng at least equal Kefka and Sephiroth. And I can really identify with a reaper as a threat verses a meteor.

everyone is curious.....

This hurts me.

tim is cool
kai leng? no way. just a stereotypical ninja adversary.....

I understand. Maybe I left satisfied because I didn't think that a perfect ending needed everything to be explained: I just wanted some more insight (even if I had to fill in foggy spaces) in the Reaper story, and that's what they gave.

I imagine most have the same story, as I doubt very many people were rushing to spoil the game for themselves.

I was kind of surprised and even scared of how much my own conclusions were already expressed by many others before I even went looking for other opinions. The only thing I was spoiled on was that the "final scene" was some generic space winter image and thought that was much of the rage about it.

But then, I found out it was down to very specific stuff, first simple things like thinking of The Matrix or Evangelion which are common comparisons, but then entire lines of thought on wondering what the thought process of the author was, how it didn't take into account the fate of the armies of the battle, the plot holes regarding your crew and their fate, etc. I just found myself nodding and going "exactly!" at almost every new post I read.

I admit I am somewhat of a cynic regarding Bioware, but much of my reaction was simple puzzlement, not random hate but the need to find out if others felt like I did, and the fact was that most people did and exactly in the same way.

I can agree to that. The writing in FNV and Alpha Protocol is miles better than the overall writing in the ME series. Obsidian games are technical disasters though. Where the ME series shines though is the interaction between squadmates and their banter. It's fun and rewarding to talk to them and subplots are written nicely too (like the genophage). This is why I enjoyed 2 and 3 even if I found their main plot to be weak.

I got F:NV on the backburner, maybe, but I never really liked the Fallout Universe.

So I just finished ME3.

*sigh*

An incredible game. Good atmosphere, interactions, gameplay, etc.

But...that ending. That FUCKING ENDING.

Fuck this shit. I have nothing to say. Fuck it.

What happened to Samara? I'm playing ME2 over again because I guess I didn't recruit her when I played it the first time. Or she was a DLC I never got.

Also, if it spoils ME2 don't tell me :P

Well, I respect your opinion and it makes sense that you also like the ending of BSG. ME3 and BSG share a similar thematic ending. I loathed the ending to BSG for pretty much the same reasons why I hate the ending to ME3. Though, BSG really, REALLY, delivered on closure for the most part.

If it were JUST bleak I wouldn't have much of a problem with it, at most I'd just be bugged with how it runs counter to fixing long standing issues through the series (genophage, exile), and even then it could be only SLIGHTLY less bleak (everyone ran back home just before the crucible fired) and left me content. The real problems are the plot holes, how some events just don't make sense, and the fact there's too little variety between the endings despite the drastically different repercussions.

It's not that I want a happy ending, it's that I want a SATISFYING ending. Something like Xenosaga III managed the latter despite being even bleaker (
literally everything in the universe but two ships vanished in exchange for restoring the Sol System with the hopes MAYBE the universe's inevitable self destruction can be averted
), but ME3 just fell flat. That, and depending on the choice in ending it's sort of nonsensical: why does Control blow up the relays from energy waves? How the hell is Synthesis supposed to even WORK? I guess the last one's just similar to husking devices, but it still comes off as lame that the "everyone's a cyborg!" ending just means circuitry lines on everything.

Yea exactly the same here, except until the end of ME3 I had shed all the negative shit DA2 had brought to the BioWare name. I was ready to give them a second chance.

Now, DA3 is going to have to have an amazing, out of this world marketing campaign, with full demo before I ever think to invest any time into their products again.

And I'll wait until some people finish that game before buying it, too.

Gaming needed its Citizen Kane. And one brave studio in Edmonton answered. After an unfortunately poor first title, an excellent sequel, and now an utterly transcendent finale, Mass Effect has become a work worthy of the Library of Congress, rising from the lowly depths of curmudgeonly computer role-playing games to the lofty heights of a true multimedia epic rivaling the classics. Some ask if games are art. Mass Effect 3 answers definitively.

I love it!

ME3 has some huge weak links writing-wise. Kai Leng was a goddamn joke.

Yes, one of the best of the trilogy :), her backstory is veeery interesting.

She's amazing. I loved how she would kill you if you smuggle drugs or bribe someone but asking her to work for an organization that is racist against aliens, murder people, corrupted and that experiments on other races is perfectly fine with her code.
