4GB EVGA GTX 680 FTW

Do we have any idea when this will be available?

I have until April 3rd to return the 3GB 580 I bought last month. I'm definitely going to do it, but I'd much rather go up in VRAM instead of down.

Wasn't originally planning to buy this, but I'm considering scrapping my two GTX 480 cards for one of these. I figure the savings on the electric bill would probably cover the difference :P

I'm not paying half a grand for a GPU, so the interesting part of this for me is:

How low will AMD's prices go? 399 for 7970 or only 450?

Which then pushes the 7950 down accordingly...will 7870 remain untouched?

And when are NVidia's pitcairn level chips due, and what kind of price performance can we expect from them?

I mean right now I'd be looking at buying a 7870. So the question to me is if there will be any domino effect into that area, and how long I have to wait.

PS: One (and only one) 680 SKU just came into to stock at newegg, first I've seen there. Grab it fast! Lol

Edit: Nope, already sold out.

I would guess nothing, in a few months you may see it go to 500 with rebate. These are premium products and not where they make their money so I seriously doubt you'll see them drop prices considering the 7970 is still low stock most places.

I think I'm going stock EVGA GTX 680. Still has nearly a gig more than my GTX 570 SC and I don't plan on going more than two monitors max. I get why people are doing 3 or even 4 monitors, but I don't have the space for that.

Most aren't there are maybe 3 or 4 of us.

Err, there's no way they can leave 7970 at 550 when GTX 680 is faster in almost every game imo...even 499 is probably untenable (again, same price for lesser performance?)

Only question in my mind is if even enough people will bite at 449 or if they have to go to 399.

28nm yields aside, it's worth remembering Tahiti is a smaller chip than Caymen/6970, which sold for 349. 399 should be zero problem.

According to EVGA "months away"

EDIT: Beaten by months...

This was in my "Pros" column when I decided to purchase. Hey whatever it takes right?

Just bought the Asus GTX680 card. It should arrive this Saturday. :-)

Now I just have to decide if I'm going to buy the new iPad as well ...

as a (kinda) Nvidia fan I'm very happy with these results and I hope these cards will be a huge commercial success for them as well ... My biggest fear has always been Nvidia saying "F this" and fully going for the phone/tablet market :p (though they haven't had that much success there yet)

they really delivered on both performance and efficiency

personally I'm just waiting for the GK110 though :p
partially because I don't care about energy usage and just want the biggest, baddest single chip GPU out there,
and partially because I'm hoping there will be some more *interesting* 120 hz monitors available around that time as my current GTX480@580+ish speeds is still going strong after 18 months with regards to 1080p 60 hz performance (except for some notorious cases ofcourse)

also some water pr0n

EK waterblock

Aquacomputer waterblock - Installation Vid (those VRMs look tiny compared to my 480 lol)

also also I don't really know what to think of the new overclocking method they're using :/ hope to see some more results soon. and that stacked power connector looks downright stupid hehe

$469 would be a safe drop. However, it really depends on the sale figures from this point forward. The 7970 keeps selling out most of the time so it looks like they are selling most of what they can put out. If this equation doesnt change or has little impact, I doubt they would drop the price.

Remember the 7970 still has a gig VRAM more than the 680. Pretty sure people spending $500 would still eat it up in hopes that the card is more future proof. I'm also hearing two conflicting things regarding the 4GB 680; Nvidia hasnt set the SRP, its upto AIC partners and another one that it is going to be $599.

Which then pushes the 7950 down accordingly...will 7870 remain untouched?
7950 should drop to atleast $399.
1. It isnt a class leading product.
2. 580 even though EOL'ed are going for as low as $350 now.
3. 7870 is breathing down its neck in most cases and even though it is still overpriced, is available for $100 less.

7870 remains in the safest spot for now. Atleast Nvidia managed to counter attack the 7700 series with the (gimped) 560 SE model.

May. 560TI 448 core level of performance as of few weeks back. I hope Nvidia doesnt do a 680 on the price.

Now post another picture with the PC and a shoe on your head.
lol

Turbo = Overclocking without full user control
Non-Turbo = Overclocking with full user control

I'm guessing it wont be such a big deal in the end but seeing how people love to overclock, volt their cards it might become an issue with the modding community.

What are the advantages of turbo? Load based clocking?
Yes, and if implemented correctly this could be huge. E.g. if a game is programmed "badly" it will only use, say, 50% of the GPU, but the hardware can compensate to some extent by upping the clock.

But I think the biggest impact would be in the case of laptops (and consoles?) where thermal considerations are paramount.

Same here on the waiting for GK110, or even the 2xGK110. Though have you checked out the Benq XL2420T? Pretty amazing monitor. I got my S23A750D for basically $280 out the door from Frys, which is why I went that route. I've had the pleasure of using the 2420T (had to test out for some of my teammates to make sure it was working, right?), and it's pretty much perfect.

7970 owners with buyer's remorse because of GTX 680.

GTX 680 owners to get buyers remorse when 7990 comes out.

And the vicious cycle continues for all eternity.

Imma get me a 7970 when we get dat pricedrop

Besides the obvious bench improvements, Nvidia have really made some #gamechanger additions to these new cards. Pretty impressive all around really.

Buyer's remorse over a dual-GPU product from ATI, haha.

580 SLI v. 680 SLI benches...I need them...are there any available?

Guru 3d mentioned on the last page of their review that they will have a SLI review tomorrow!!! They showed a 3dmark screen shot as a "HINT" and it was showing a 14k+ score...so yeah, I think it is going to kick ass in SLI.

"GTX 680 is even more impressive at future graphics workloads than the review benchmarks really let on. Part of this has to do with having 2x the geometry performance/cluster as Fermi, the bind-less texture support, etc. Given that the game development mind share is basically backwards compatible to the console boat anchor, in all honesty, it is going to take a while before people realize what is possible on GTX 680 when they really start to push the card with the same vigor as they push the Xbox360 or PS3. However if this does happen, you can expect a fundamentally different experience than even the best current PC games."
