The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Anybody here as an iControl pad and wants to do the same or write something about it? Never even seen the thing, so I have no clue and I could only copy/paste something out there.
I have icontrolpad and I don't mind to add for update. But I'm on iPhone at the moment. When I got home then I will post in here all the latest info about icontrolpad such as which firmware better at, and new apps list etc.

I have been messing around with apple tv AirPlay this evening, I have a lot to write about it good and bad so I may make a dedicated thread to it, for the price I think it's worth it but it also depends on the app and game, in short if a game is complex like real racing its not that smooth while a simple game like angry birds is really smooth over AirPlay.

Really enjoying Swordigo. Awesome Zelda II vibe going on....and for $2? Such a steal. Seems like it supports the retina display on iPad.

And here I was, swearing off new iPad games for awhile. Lots of comparisons to Zelda II (my fav) in the review section...

Bought.

Anyone know an Advance Wars clone, I know htere is Mechowars or something, but anything in that ilk

I recommend Uniwar or Great Little War Game. (I didn't really like Mecho Wars since it felt like it was trying too hard to be like Advance Wars.)

Uniwar has been around a few years now. I haven't played it much recently, but I played it a ton when it first came out. Uniwar does have async online play and is still updated occasionally. While Uniwar is more like Military Madness, it's still in the same turn-based war game genre as Advance Wars. Great Little War Game I haven't played as much, but it's good and well liked. GLWG is more expensive than Uniwar's $.99, but there is a lite version.

Love and miss the buttons?

iControlPad
What is good about it?
Well you can able to control the iOS games with buttons! It may not cheap.
I think the CLAMP SET was brilliant and felt like a gaming handheld, but the iPhone is quite heavy and slight difficult to hold in angle. L1 & R1 (shoulder buttons) is quite bad placement, hard to reach.

You don't have jailbreak if you want but it would be perfer to jailbreak because you can use the controller on near all of the apps.

---------------------------------------------
For non-jailbreak: Use the iCade mode from supported in the iOS games. It means up to developer use this feature.

iCade compatibility list: ---> http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=96023

---------------------------------------------
Jailbreaked iPhone. You can get Cydia app Blutrol that can map iControlPad controls to native iOS apps. At the moment only iCade mode is supported, so that means no analogue controls yet, but native iControlPad support is on its way accord from Matthias Ringwald who made it. In Twitter, he aiming for this month, possible delay for sure.

Blutrol compatibility list: ---> http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=119408

Beware! Some apps may not suitable to using Blutrol especially if this app support iCade controller.
You may need to play to bit which firmware is better for some apps.

Firmware?
You can check which firmware is better, there should be no harm to downgrade or upgrade whenever you want. I have flash it about 15 times, and no problem so far.

---------------------------------------------
Firmware 2.1 --->http://boards.openpandora.org/index.php?/topic/5137-new-icp-test-firmware-v21/
-improvement calibration controls.

---------------------------------------------
Firmware 2.2 --->http://boards.openpandora.org/index...mware-v21/page__st__40__p__123646#entry123646
-START and SELECT toggle the onscreen keyboard and has almost no delay (don't need to hold for 2 seconds)
-D-pad as nubs.

---------------------------------------------
Firmware 2.3 --->http://boards.openpandora.org/index...mware-v21/page__st__40__p__125398#entry125398
-The left nub is active as a dpad replacement in all HID keyboard based modes.
-iCade mode will remember which key layout mode it is in between power cycles
-Switching between iCade, keyboard and special packet mode will not require a repairing with your phone as they are all HID keyboard.

Yuck

Everytime someone posts they got the New iPad, I get really jelly.

I have to remind myself to wait for the next iPad!

If you have an iPad 2 already - I wouldn't sweat it. Besides the screen its very similar and waiting for the next new iPad is probably a good call unless you don't care about money - then obviously buy a new iPad now.

Can someone with a new iPad who happened to waste his money on this game/tech demo like I did post some cityscape Sky Gamblers AS screenshots? Just curious to compare it to my iPad2, if they've actually done anything to improve the more glaring issues. The graphics up close are quite bad in such instances. But the game looks alright overall in motion, due to decent water and heat haze etc effects, and not flying so low, or flying above natural environments instead of cities. But yeah, cities are bad (imageshack downscaled them a bit).

I bought it, but too lazy to post screen shots. It looks pretty damn good, especially considering whats its pulling off at that resolution. Textures, effects, etc are nice, enemy geometry is kinda low, but still impressive overall.

What the fuck is up with games decreasing in price right after I buy them. Angry Birds Space is $0.99 now? WTF? It was $2.99 yesterday.

Uh...the price hasn't changed in the US store. Think you are mistaken, and haven't been using the store long. It's still 2.99 for the iPad version, and $.99 for the iPhone version.

Personally I'm waiting for the inevitable $.99 dropped for the HD version.

CodeRunner is free for today only. If you can suspend your disbelief, and are open to leaving the house to play, then I recommend it.

I played the first "mission", and really enjoyed it. I would have continued, had it not started raining. This game probably benefits living in a bigger city, with more people playing, but it seems to work without anyone else as well. You're basically recruited to investigate this guy, which involves going to scenes close to your location. It's mostly audio based, along with going through hacker file trees and GPS maps of your location.

It had me go to a bus stop and download data off of a nearby 'stolen cell phone', and then leave it as a dead drop at another location. I'm really digging the app so far, and you folks should grab it while it's free:

Thanks for sharing. Interesting concept!

Posting from my new iPad. It's my first wooooo Infinity blade 2 am get. Sword and sorcery as well. I wish the op had more go buy these list of games. Cannot wait for balders gate.

Oh cool didn't know there was an iPad version of bit trip beat. Love that game. Lol this is my fourth purchase of it.

It's a goddamn shame runner is no where to be found on iOS.

WTF iCab died on me I was writing a long ass post ma porca troia!!
Briefly, absolutely, and I assure you people will definitely care for that list, will go up with a proper banner and everything, credited to you of course, and once it's there people will track down the games easily and help others out making an informed decision if they think the iCade's worth buying or not.
I'm also looking for someone to write a couple of lines on their experience with the iCade, good or bad, so to add what gaffers think of the iCade. Are there two models of the iCade or even more?

Anybody here as an iControl pad and wants to do the same or write something about it? Never even seen the thing, so I have no clue and I could only copy/paste something out there.

What about that Fling (?) thingie?
Anything else that I should mention.

Alright, no problem. I'll get back to keeping it updated on a regular basis. As far as I know there are two different iCade's. They function exactly the same and only look different. As far as the Fling goes, I know Fusebox has one so maybe he can write a bit about it. Or someone else that has it.

There is an atari dock/arcade stick thing too, which I like the look of but it only has four buttons.

I don't really understand why more games don't include icade support. And apparently the online wireless controller is supposed to work with their iPad app (if it ever comes out), so why hasn't anyone come out with a ps3/360 Bluetooth pad yet?

The update for Kids vs Goblins is in review. We fixed the control and camera issues and a crash.

Also: price drop to $1. Which is insane since we spent 12 months on that game :D. Hope you like it!

Yeah, I've seen that Atari thing at various stores but I don't know much about. iCade support is still growing but one thing that can be done is going on Touch Arcade's forums and bugging developers about adding it in their games if it would work well. I think there is an app for jail broken devices to use a PS3 controller, I kept thinking I read it somewhere. Maybe on here.

Noticed that, "Amazing Breaker" has received a Retina update for ipad. It's personally one of my favorite iOS games and one I spent countless hours playing.

By next year the next iPad will be the new iPad. Buy the new iPad now then sell it next year to get the new iPad.
New to iPad gaming. What are the best developers that I should keep an eye out for their games?
Cave! They're even teasing you about mystery new releases right there on the front page!

(...I wouldn't be surprised if they're just more HD versions of previous ports though)

None of the HD Angry Birds games has never been below $1.99

You'll be waiting for many years.

Is Hunters 2 worth it? Also why is episode one more expensive?

It's fantastic, I played it for hours until my neck hurt last night. It's beautiful, it's slick and fast to play and it's maybe one of the best TBS strategy games on iOS. Honestly, I'm enjoying it even more than FFT right now. It's a lot more simple of a game, but as a touch-to-move-squad-tactics game it's a lot more fluid to play and not nearly as clunky as FFT, while it of course never reaches the hardcore heights of that game either. IF you like TBS games you will love this so much.

No idea about the price though. Maybe they realised they were charging far too much, especially when you think of how barebones Hunters 1 is comared to the sequel.

Yes yes yes. I'm not gonna replicate Jedeyes post but absolutely worth it. I've spent some 12 hours playing it by now and I'm nowhere near done.

Regarding the price, the game is in its launch sale stage at the moment, I'm guessing it'll be priced the same as Ep1 at one point.

ugh hate shit like that, when I buy something on the app store I always think if the app is worth the current price to myself and that it can drop any time, but it's still disheartening when you could have saved a few quid.

*edit* looks like you made a msitake with the iphone and ipad versions, they are still the same prices.

It hasn't changed price. It's the HD version that is 2.99, and regular is 0.99. Has been since launch.

Have you played much Ravenmark yet? It'd be interesting to hear the reasons of someone who's played both and favors Hunters 2. Ravenmark's campaign is more story focused and most likely better written than Hunters 2, with a bigger emphasis on strategy but it has no RPG elements to it, so I suppose there are some big differences that would cater to different people.

The thing that bothers me most about Hunters 1/2, though I haven't played them much, is the artificially inflated numbers... why do damages need to run in the 10s or 100s of thousands? Just is a little disconnect for me, minor nit-pick. I do look forward to seeing what Hunters 2 is like though.

After spending last night and this morning testing out my apps on AirPlay i've worked a lot out and learned things youtube videos do not teach you.

AirPlay is pointless on your desktop monitor, you will see a slight video compression over the entire image and the minor delays due to wireless and encoding/decoding will annoy you more then anything, not worth it just to double the size of your screen at your desk.

However it works brilliantly on a big tv when you sit 8-10 feet back or so, I tested this on our 32" tv while sat on our sofa and the experience was much better, it comes down to what games you play.

Racing is the best, you can't feel the lag in the accelerometer movements and for games like real racing you only need one button to brake, the entire screen area to touch.

Twin stick games work but it can be a bit strange working out shooting angles while looking up from your ipad using virtual sticks, lack of feedback on your thumbs takes time to get used too without looking down at them.

Strategy and area-touching games is a no go, you need to see your ipad screen to know where to touch, only use I can see is having friends watch you play.

For £99 I think it's alright with how it works right now, I would give the entire thing a 6/10. AirPlay seems to rely on CPU power so hopefully next gen ipads will improve performance as much as it can before wifi bandwidth get's in the way, some games will choke trying to AirPlay (real racing 2) while others will play butter smooth (sonic ASR, less graphical game equals spare cpu runtime for AirPlay)

That's a good question. Maybe it's juts a psychological thing, whereby having guns with massive numbers makes the guns feel more powerful than having a rocket launcher that does 10 damage or something. So really, it's purely aesthetic, since it would make no real difference if the numbers were scaled down. And it's all pretty pointless when the monsters health scales up to silly numbers too. So yeah, I see what you're saying.

Not played Ravenmark yet, no. It does look fairly good going by impressions, but the medieval setting turns me off a little, I'm much more of a sci fi fan (maybe because of the emphasis on ranged combat?). Still, it's on my "rainy day" list, one day I'll get it.

I've been trying to since I got the iPad! The iPad 3 landscape glitch is a little annoying.

Re: Hunters 2
How bad are the IAPs? I'm always a little wary when I see in-game currency for sale.
IAPs are completely non intrusive and absolutely not needed to play whatsoever. You barely even see the button to purchase them. The devs put it in because according to them there are people out there who are compelled to buy IAPs everywhere and it'd be foolish not to cater to them as well. That said, it's very much a nonissue in this game.

Regarding Ravenmark, played the Lite version an it completely failed to grab me. Medieval combat just is not exciting unless it's on TV. Scifi guns, explosions and gore tops that any day.
