Pretty much every guy I know think it looks awesome because of the action in the trailers. And I've got to assume females will turn out big time for it as well.

I'd be very surprised if it bombed.

I can't be the only one that thinks Snow White and the Huntsman looks like it's gonna be terrible. The only thing that trailers have is some semi-decent imagery, and that's it. The extreme seriousness displayed makes it look equally ridiculous to Mirror Mirror, but for different reasons. There's a five minute clip of the movie on youtube, it does not look good. It's so cold and detached, it's just unpleasant to me.

Huntsman advertising has a very Games of Thrones-ish vibe to it to me. There can only be one queen!

I'm much more interested in that than the goofy Mirror Mirror. My biggest issue with Huntsman is the awful Twilight actress.

appeals to the twilight with Kristen Stewart

appeals to the man crowd with sexy ass ass Charlize Theron

Is the queen supposed to be threatened by Snow White when she's 1000x hotter?

I'm not betting on whether it will be any good--it does look like it could be way too serious--I just think the look and the cast is going to bring in a big audience. It seems to have nailed a "bad-ass" feel for both genders, somehow.

Trailer looked pretty bad to me. You are not alone.

Thought it looked like garbage. Sure it'll make a good amount, though.

EVERYONE saw Avatar but it doesn't have some kind of rabid teen fanbase obsessed with it like Twilight, Harry Potter, or Hunger Games.

Which reminds me, the lack of a rabid fan community obsessed with the Avatar universe and Avatar merchandise has always surprised me. There is no real large fanboy community obsessed with the universe and devoted to collecting and so forth that existed for franchises like Star Wars soon as the first film was in theaters.

The fact that merchandise sales for Avatar like action figures were a dud was strange.

Eh? I recall one or two press photo of that. You dont see teen girls squeeling about jake sully all over youtube.

I am curious on your thoughts why avatar didn't take off as a fan obsession after the release of the film the way star wars did after that initial film came out (merchandise collecting, massive immediate fanboy community).

The film was massive an everyone saw it but cultural impact has been pretty minimal, at least in America as compared to what Star Wars did after 1977.

Where were the endless kids with avatar lunchboxs and backpacks? Where were the kids making their parents buy then avatar toys? Like how it was in '78 after Star Wars. That aspect never happened. At least not here.

Yea, I find this really interesting as well, and no one can come up with a good answer. I can only think two factors that may explain the huge difference in cultural impact. First, the original Star Wars was seen by a lot more people than Avatar. In 1977, popular movies would run for a really long time and Star Wars was playing for like a year. When you adjust for inflation, Star Wars grossed significantly more than Avatar (domestic). So, it had a broader initial reach.

The other factor has to do with the appeal of each movie. When I think about Star Wars, I think about Darth Vader, storm troopers, space fighters, ect. All things that can be easily converted into toys. Avatar's main appeal was the world of Pandora. There were a few cool mechs, and the Na'vi are neat looking warriors, but people paid to see that movie because they wanted to 'visit' another planet. That's something that can't be replicated with merchandise.

Disney is probably scrambling hard to find a YA novel to get the flim rights to about now.
Well the big three were Harry Potter, Twilight, & Hunger Games and all 3 are accounted for. They can't make up one out of thin air.

There are some more B-level YA popular franchises like Percy Jackson and Eragon but their respective films didn't do very well.

Percy Jackson is getting a sequel despite not doing wonderfully, but you're right: Twilight, HP, and HG were/are all hits because they were already sensations. When something isn't already wildly popular (*cough* City of Ember) it seems to fail.
Though Eragon was a pretty damn popular series, I blame the movie being utter shit for that BO performance.

... or, barring that, they're probably negotiating with Rovio for the film rights to Angry Birds. Hey, Rovio wants to make a film out of it...

City Of Ember was so awesome. Can't believe there's no Blu Ray yet.

I really need to finish that novel I'm working on, so I can option it out to Lionsgate and be swimming in a Olympic-sized pool of money.

I actually have an idea for a YA novel series, too. It probably owes more to Bad Boys II and Grand Theft Auto than to Hunger Games, though.

u better throw some romance in that shit

First off it was Sherlock Holmes, not the sequel Game of Shadows

Second did Sherlock come anywhere close to Avatar outside opening week? OK then, point proven it was nothing worthwhile in the grand scheme

In fact Avatar went unchallenged for almost 2 months till Dear John finally dethroned it at #1

Are you seriously implying that Dear John was a more important release than Sherlock?

Btw I don't see what's so crazy about thinking Titanic will outgross HG in April. Most of HG's gross will come from march. It's probably going to be relatively frontloaded.

Pandya:

Sources tell me #HungerGames finished SUN very close to Lionsgate's estimate. $35M, -31%, $154M wknd. Still #3 alltime.

SM3 am cry

What is surprising is how long it took Hollywood to tap into female centric "fanboy" franchises (yes girls like Star Wars, Batman, etc just like boys like Hunger Games but it isn't the primary target demo).

I mean the teen boy demographic has been the prime target of blockbusters ever since the advent of the modern blockbuster in the mid-70's up until just recently.

I mean there had to be other huge female audience driven YA franchises that could be adapted prior to Harry Potter/Twilight/Hunger Games.

House of Night and the Morganville Vampires are out there still. lol.

I think Mistborn would be a great movie. If someone was smart enough to put money biehind it and do the boks justice.

I'm betting Pretties is next for girl-oriented adaptations; THG success should mean studios will risk another female-lead franchise.

Has The Maze Runner been optioned yet? It's more gender neutral (meaning male lead) but it also seems likely to get snapped up in a teen fiction rush.

My wife and I went to see 21 Jump Street, so we added to that staying up on the list. The lines Friday night for THG were insane though. I had no idea how big this movie was until we got to the theater and they had people lined up outside and inside as well as this movie showing on most of the screens they have. We might check it out once the buzz dies down and we can get into the theater without having to get their super early for a good seat or sit in the front row.

What are the odds of The Dark Knight Rises beating The Hunger Games in opening weekend? I took that bet blind from some people at work. But in Nolan I trust. Did I set myself up for a loss?

This is a pretty good bet, actually. There should be a thread for it. Which poster loses, has to show a real pic of themselves doing something embarrassing. Shoe on head. Buying all the hunger games books. Or something more creative.

So they have to show a pic of themselves watching The Hunger Games?

So Hunger Games is coming out strong. Let's see if either Spider-Man or any of the summer blockbusters beats it.

Should be an interesting year.

People I bet though are all saying it pulled it off because it rode off of Heath Ledgers death and how good he was in TDK. Rises doesn't have that.
