I can't be the only one that thinks Snow White and the Huntsman looks like it's gonna be terrible. The only thing that trailers have is some semi-decent imagery, and that's it. The extreme seriousness displayed makes it look equally ridiculous to Mirror Mirror, but for different reasons. There's a five minute clip of the movie on youtube, it does not look good. It's so cold and detached, it's just unpleasant to me.

Huntsman advertising has a very Games of Thrones-ish vibe to it to me. There can only be one queen!
I'm much more interested in that than the goofy Mirror Mirror. My biggest issue with Huntsman is the awful Twilight actress.

I'm not betting on whether it will be any good--it does look like it could be way too serious--I just think the look and the cast is going to bring in a big audience. It seems to have nailed a "bad-ass" feel for both genders, somehow.
I admit, I lol'd.

Yea, I find this really interesting as well, and no one can come up with a good answer. I can only think two factors that may explain the huge difference in cultural impact. First, the original Star Wars was seen by a lot more people than Avatar. In 1977, popular movies would run for a really long time and Star Wars was playing for like a year. When you adjust for inflation, Star Wars grossed significantly more than Avatar (domestic). So, it had a broader initial reach.
The other factor has to do with the appeal of each movie. When I think about Star Wars, I think about Darth Vader, storm troopers, space fighters, ect. All things that can be easily converted into toys. Avatar's main appeal was the world of Pandora. There were a few cool mechs, and the Na'vi are neat looking warriors, but people paid to see that movie because they wanted to 'visit' another planet. That's something that can't be replicated with merchandise.

Well the big three were Harry Potter, Twilight, & Hunger Games and all 3 are accounted for. They can't make up one out of thin air.
There are some more B-level YA popular franchises like Percy Jackson and Eragon but their respective films didn't do very well.
Percy Jackson is getting a sequel despite not doing wonderfully, but you're right: Twilight, HP, and HG were/are all hits because they were already sensations. When something isn't already wildly popular (*cough* City of Ember) it seems to fail.Cheebo said:

Did you see the intro to Angry Birds Space? I think it can be done... they just need to find a way to make a 90 minute feature about it, that's the problem.

Btw I don't see what's so crazy about thinking Titanic will outgross HG in April. Most of HG's gross will come from march. It's probably going to be relatively frontloaded.

What is surprising is how long it took Hollywood to tap into female centric "fanboy" franchises (yes girls like Star Wars, Batman, etc just like boys like Hunger Games but it isn't the primary target demo).
I mean the teen boy demographic has been the prime target of blockbusters ever since the advent of the modern blockbuster in the mid-70's up until just recently.
I mean there had to be other huge female audience driven YA franchises that could be adapted prior to Harry Potter/Twilight/Hunger Games.

I think Mistborn would be a great movie. If someone was smart enough to put money biehind it and do the boks justice.
I'm betting Pretties is next for girl-oriented adaptations; THG success should mean studios will risk another female-lead franchise.

My wife and I went to see 21 Jump Street, so we added to that staying up on the list. The lines Friday night for THG were insane though. I had no idea how big this movie was until we got to the theater and they had people lined up outside and inside as well as this movie showing on most of the screens they have. We might check it out once the buzz dies down and we can get into the theater without having to get their super early for a good seat or sit in the front row.

21 Jump Street is way less rotten than I was expecting. I've had it recommended to me a couple of times too. I might check it out.

People I bet though are all saying it pulled it off because it rode off of Heath Ledgers death and how good he was in TDK. Rises doesn't have that.
