Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Can you read? Read his previous posts again and tell me that the complsints about them aren't justified.

This is a speculation thread, there are times where you can find rational and good posts and then there are times where we are going circles. Either you can live with it or just ignore th thread.

There is a defense force for everything.

I've read them. They still don't justify the responses. And I'm not even mostly talking about him. If ANYBODY comes in here and says something that is against the popular opinion of this thread, then they:

A. Can't read
B. Are bitter fanboys
C. Have an agenda
D. Insane/no brains/etc.

We have gone long past the point of having logical discussions in this thread. Like I said, it's exactly like the sports threads that were moved to the community. Every time a newcomer comes into this thread that isn't 100% Pro-Nintendo, I almost can hear Seinfeld scream "That GUY!!!! Swarm Swarm Swarm!!!"

I'm actually not trying to be mean nor does it have anything to do with opinions I feel are counter to my own (nor am I saying they are counter to my own).

But, it's like

To use Lupin's puppy analogy, if you ended that analogy with talk about how you don't love the puppy anymore and are angry at people who show affection to it, it would say kind of a lot about you.

If you then went "YOU GUYS ARE THE ONES BEING AFFECTIONATE TO THE PUPPY AND THAT IS WHY I HATE IT" and implied people were being retarded (or, I guess, slow) for not immediately grasping this moral of the story, then I would totally examine how you view gaming that this is the analogy you wrote out and then defended.

If anything I just find the analogy really stupid. Don't really mind if someone just doesn't like Nintendo. But the whole idea of hating something because it has a rabid fanbase seems rather silly. (Or that's how I interpret the analogy)

I'm kind of forgiving though so I don't mind if you stick around, ViewtifulJC.

I admit it wasn't the best analogy in the world, but I didn't expect uh...that, kind of response.

Perhaps we need to start steering the boat by fueling some general speculation.

HEY GUYS.

Just wondering, but what do you think are going to be the main holiday movers for each of, say, Nintendo's first four years of the Wii U?

I'm thinking they're going to push "Pikmin Armada"* and if they're smart NSMBM in that first year. Is the second year too early for Smash? Hmm, maybe "Mario Kart Ultimate Challenge" in year 2, "Super Smash Cousins" in year 3, and "The Legend of Zelda: The Secret of Right Handedness" in year 4.

What are you ideas for the prime movers on Nintendo's part?

(hopefully, this will help to dispell the negative feelings going around here for a bit; bonus is that maybe we'll speculate for a bit on something that has nothing to do with poly counts!)

* I'm making up names here a bit, because numbers are so passé

There were really two different analogies(some people don't like Nintendo because of their games, and this is compounded by the rabid fanbase they have and "argh stop liking what I don't like, fanboys" mentality), but they used similar subjects because I thought it would be more easily relatable. The second one I was a little frustrated with because I thought it was pretty damn blatant what it symbolizes, so I got a little angry and insulted his intelligence. Which didn't give me much of a foot to stand on when you kept insulting my intelligence.

...This is all kind of awkward to keep going on about. And the more you dwell on it, the weirder it gets.

And the worse part is, that's absolutely nothing else to talk about to distract from it.

Let's develop an eShop/NiN game ! Let's make a GAF team ! I'll be a producer & content designer, i'll do some irritating teases and obscure french references that will attract tons of new consumers :D

I'm serious, there's a bunch of creative-minds around here, we must use these for an innovative & fun project !

I'd be down for concept and 2D art.

I am guessing 3 Nintendo launch titles in the launch window. One being a Mario, Pikmin and a curve ball (maybe the new Miyamoto game or whatever Retro is cooking). I am excited to see the 3DS version of Paper Mario :) and I am begging Nintendo to get the 3DS Fire Emblem here STAT!

Pikmin 3 would be possible on late 2012 release. I mean, that game has got to have gotten somewhere by now... If not, 2013 release then!

Smash Bros 4 I can see happening in late 2013 to late 2014. How long did it take for Sakurai to work on Brawl and finish it, by the way? Would be nice to see a teaser of some sorts this E3!

As for, Mario Kart I can see happening in 2014 too. 7 just came out so it'd be wise to release the console game a few years later.

(btw, I'm actually hoping for lots of speculation on stuff after the first year, since we've gotten lots of the first-year guesses posted very frequently)

Interesting. Super Paper Mario? I liked SPM a lot on the Wii, because I like games that screw with their audience a bit (I really need to get an old copy of Eternal Darkness, I know it's right up my alley but never got around to it!), but I completely understand why a lot of people straight up hate it and prefer its predecessors.. Were you actually talking about that version or about one of the more conventional Paper Mario games?

Mario Kart is the perfect game for the end of Year one/ start of year two. So either fall 2013 or spring 2014.

Don't forget Wii Sports U.

Given the general critical acclaim to Kid Icarus and the crazy praise in gamers community that i see on every boards (like it's a revelation), i'm quite sure Nintendo will be begged to make a Wii U version on every conferences, every showrooms, every interviews.

And here comes the BELIEVETON: advertising's CGI are actually a footage of a Wii U KI, developed secretly in parallel of the 3DS one !

So is New Super Mario Bros Mii a real thing or is that just a tech demo or what?

I was hoping they'd change the art style. I LOVE NSMBWii, but I can't stand that plasticy Fisher-Price art direction they went with.

Also, I'd really like a 2d Mario with some of the enviroments from the Galaxy game. 2d Mario platforming in Gusty Garden, and Toy Time and whatever. Haven't we seen enough generic forest/ice/final fire worlds enough!?

LOL stop it, someone might actually believe you

Oh man, and after some people will come and bash me for this and state that they don't believe me, yadda yadda yadda as you say :p

It's really just a believeton, a mix of dream & anticipation, i know nothing about it huh :p

Haha I doubt that was Wii-U footage. I've said it before, but I would love a Wii-U spin-off focused on Magnus.

As for launch titles, I think a surprise title will be Wii-U Relax or Eternal Darkness 2 with Biometric Feedback. Yes, I'm still hanging on to that.

Hey Viewtiful.. don't go anywhere! Even though I'm a bit grated by the "annoying fanbase" approach, I still like that you said what you think aloud. So many people around here play that disingenuous "I'm so neutral, let me choose my words very carefully so that I don't get banned" game that what you wrote - although a bit unusual to me - still was quite fresh.

Probably not worth a lot, but I figured I'd chime-in.

That would be awesome and brings a smile to my face. I can't wait to see the animation shorts that Production I.G, Shaft, and STUDIO4°C are cooking up. They should be released over the coming months to help keep things red hot for the game throughout the summer.

As much as I loved NSMB Wii, I agree. The art style is so... bland. :(

EDIT: Also, afaik, it's just a tech demo. But I would not be shocked if it ends up being a full game.

Oh they came to Nintendo-centric websites since the internet debuts actually, but for community management things, animation, invitations to E3 or other showrooms (and as a lot of people, i enjoyed benefited from it to create content about the brand, previews, interviews etc.). Also organizing contests with rewards supplied by Nintendo. Not a lot of exclusive info, yes. They weren't really doing this even for major generalist sites. But i understand what you say. And Iwata Asks and their other recent promotional/game development presentations efforts are somewhat linked to this media situation.

Edit: ACHIEVEMENT: FIRST POST OF A NEW PAGE, TWICE IN A ROW: +100 skill points

I keep forgetting that you're a journalist (you're a slick industry spy in my mind), so I hope you're not too offended by my, umm, remarkable dislike of western gaming reporters.

Nintendo needs to expand those focused efforts. I'm liking their baby steps..

Nice promotion, right. I'm watching the first one on my 3DS, from Production IG: fun but nothing compelling from an anime/direction point of view. I'm not waiting anything better from the studio Shaft segment but man, I'm really hyped by the 4°C segment. The studio is mythical and Nakazawa, the animator/director of this one, is a true "karisuma animator".

I keep forgetting that you're a journalist
He was.

Ben Cousins: With the App Store, what tends to happen is the good games rise to the top.

I was, and no my friend, no offense at all. I've criticized gaming "journalism" since a lot of time, and i even consider that it's not real journalism (with investigations & all) in 90% of the cases.

But to be fair, it's the state of all the medias, dedicated to a sector or generalist. Just go to google news, and you'll see that every websites are just paraphrasing a pool of 3 or 4 news agency statements, with nearly the same headlines, without any analysis, etc. The old-school reporter is an extinct kind.

Now, there are connivance problems between writers & brands in addition that touch all the tech industry. Here in France we had our fair share of "affairs & scandals" regarding that, and it gave a finishing blow, worsening the bad opinion than a lot of gamers already had about gaming medias.

Whenever theres negative news about Nintendo, this board really shows wich fanbase is the most rabid. Its not the Nintendo one... Just look at the "Virgil said WiiU is just on par with current gen" thread...

I dont care if WiiU is on par with Xbox360 or if its 1.5x, 2x, 5x or 211.45x faster... Sure, nice graphics are fine too, but the most important aspect to ME is Gameplay.

Another important factor is money. 299€/$ is propably the most i would spent on a new console on launch. I cant afford to spent more than 299€ on "just" a console. If Microsoft and/or Sony want to go batshit insane with specs then fine... Go with it. But in the end of the day, they may hurt each other more than its doing them good. Nintendo on the other hand will propably manage to make a profit next gen even if they end up being third again.

I just hope that if those "going batshit crazy with specs" rumor turns out to be true, we wont see even higher game prices. Or something like 60$ for a 6hr game, where you have to buy the online pass for 10$ to play online and if you want the last 2 hours of the single player, pay another 10$ for the "dlc ending". Not to mention the monthly xbox live/SEN fees... Gaming for the rich people is brought to you by Microsoft and Sony! I unfortunately can see this happening...

I can live with Nintendo only next gen. If Microsoft and/or Sony releases a monster of a console, its no buy for me!

ps: One brand new Xbox 360 full price title is at least 60€ (about 80$ tax included) over here... :(

I just hope that the cost of games doesn't go up with the next generation. The thing I hate most about this gen, besides the way the press handled things, is paying $59.99 for a game. This is one more reason why I stuck with Wii games mostly. I always thought $49.99 was too high, but $59.99 is way too much. For this reason I've purchased very few 360/PS3 games for that price and have gotten most of my games when they drop to $30-40. If prices go up again, then I'm pretty much done with purchasing games at full price and that would be a shame, in my opinion.

With the latest potential revelations pointing to maybe a much weaker system than a lot of us (maybe stupidly) had hoped for, i think it's a lot more important now that they change the name of the console.

It doesn't have to be radical, i would like 'Wii Universe', Wii was for the casuals now Wii Universe is for everyone ! :).

Surely they have learned their lesson after the 3DS naming and people (esp casuals) just thinking it was a slight upgrade and not an entirely new console ?.

If the system is indeed on par with PS3 / 360 with a slightly more powerful GPU and double or even treble the Ram of current systems then i will be paying no more than £200 for it as i foresee only one big exclusive launching with the system (most prob Pikman 3).

If the hardware was much more powerful and Nintendo made every third party developer make the big winter 2012 third party games run at 1080p / higher framerates / better textures, lighting (basically what a low to mid range gaming PC puts out) then i would pay up to £400 for it.

I dont want to buy a new console, play and complete Pikman and then be playing all third party games on my 360 because they are cheaper, my mates have it for that system and they have the added bonus of Achievements.

If they actually looked and ran better i would defo buy all my third party games on Wii U tho.

Do people think that the Darksiders example is just a case of a lazy developer or will they all just say 'here just be thankfull your getting the 720p / 30fps version at all'.

I cant for the life of me understand how a console rumoured to have UE4 running on it at GDC cant run games @ at least native 1080p.

Was 1080p native even confirmed at E3 2011 ?, they said Wii U can display it but then again so can the 360 and PS3, doesn't mean they are native (maybe people just assumed it was native due to it being a 2012 system).

Cheers.

IdeaMan confirmed Kid Icarus for Wii U! Stop the presses!!!!

I've sent a telegram to Kotaku!

But seriously, it does seem to be getting some hefty praise. I have not yet heard one person say that didn't really like it (I mean, some have said "it wasn't for me", and a few have said they'd prefer a slightly different control scheme). Are there any articles or sources saying that it's getting strong sales anywhere? It truly is a gigantic wildcard this generation, but I really hope that it does well, since it seems like it would fill the Space Harrier shaped void in my brain which has only been sated in the last half decade by S&P2, and I'd like this particular kind of rail shooter to become more popular as a genre (the other kind, the "Operation Wolf" descendent tree, is more prevalent but less interesting to me).

Let me expand on this, because I don't want to dance around the issue when we can increase the number of good posters instead of just having them end up vanishing suddenly.

This forum is different from the other ones on the Internet. It tries to value genuine conversation and discussion on its topics. Because of this, some things are either banned or simply not recommended.

Personal attacks are one of these.

Sometimes, someone will write something that you disagree with. On other message board, responses such as "no u" are considered to be valid counterarguments. Here, it is highly valued for a poster to quote the thing that he or she disagrees with and explain in detail why he thinks that the quotation is inaccurate citing examples, additional assertions, and even counterexamples of their own assertions which work against their own side in the debate. There is nothing more awesome than a poster who writes, "My opinion is X, and here are the reasons, but I can understand why you might think Y, because of these other reasons."

I hope that this makes sense. VAPitts, I'd be personally overjoyed if you responded to a post of mine that expanded the conversation. I have no troubles being incorrect in a debate, but I'd prefer to be told why I'm wrong instead of simply being told that I'm wrong.

tl;dr: I like NeoGAF and hope we can all get along and debate with sincerity and conviction. Also, Sega's version of SF2 sucked.

I like the cut of your jib, young man! Wise words.

Regards.

Same shithead who wrote that crap said in the comments section that he looks forward to playing nintendo IPs on the PS, XBOX

Amazing

I don't think it's really in the public consciousness how many consecutive disasters Nintendo could actually survive with its massive coinbox.

I cant for the life of me understand how a console rumoured to have UE4 running on it at GDC cant run games @ at least native 1080p.

1080p has about 2.25x as many pixels as 720p. If your system is about two and a half times as fast, you can play the same 720p games at 1080p*. However, you can also not do that and focus on giving each character and object on screen twice as many polygons, so they look more detailed without having to cheat by using textures for clothing and surfaces and soforth. If you do that, then you have to throw the higher resolution out the window. Same thing if you want more characters on screen at once, and so on.

So you can have a system a thousand times as fast, and there will still be a temptation to not run at the highest possible resolution, because each iota of raw power means you can make your game look more realistic.

(okay, maybe if it were a thousand types as fast, there would be no excuse, but I hope the basic idea here is making sense)

*edit: I know, I know, it's not exactly that simple

Which company doesn't have an annoying fanbase?

Amiga fans are kinda cool. I mean, they sit back and mostly complain about the new Commodore company, but generally they don't bug anyone.

That's about it, though.

...Turbo-Grafx rules! Bonk uber alles! None of your mascots could defeat a giant dinosaur with their head!
