Source: http://www.develop-online.net/features/1600/Ben-Cousins-Consoles-will-adapt-or-dieDid you see Iwatas speech at GDC last year?
Some of the things he says makes me really fear for the future of Nintendo.
I think there is a cognitive dissonance at Nintendo in terms of getting their heads around whats actually happening to the industry, which is such a shame because they make such fantastic games.
With the App Store, what tends to happen is the good games rise to the top. Under Nintendos system there is more negotiation and arranging marketing and promotion.
From a user-perspective, when you go on the App Store and you look at the top selling games, most of them are good quality and good value for money.
I actually feel more optimistic about the future of PC games than the consoles, to be honest.
Whys that?
Because the new platforms are moving directly onto the consoles market. One of the reason why consoles sell 170 million units is because of the many causal players who buy just one or two games per year.
Those casual players, who are the kind of engine room of the console economy, are now interested in social or mobile games.
I just think the platform holders billion dollar investments in new hardware is no longer sustainable.

Holy shit, the man himself visits my peasant 3DS!

AW Yeah!
Enjoying million sellers I see :lol
Iwata saved my ass in one room - such a strong man!
I will buy consoles from strong men, Iwata san.
Your Mii looks like he's tripping balls.
Reggie is the update. He's rearranging the insides of your 3DS right now infact. And the new Reggie looks different too. Stealth update incoming?! :O!!

Man, I buy a lot of games on the iPhone and this is patently untrue.
What's your guys plan for Wii-U preorders? I want to make sure I get mine on day 1.

The last remark there I find interesting, that he finds the billion dollar investments in new hardware is no longer sustainable. Goes hand in hand with the general conception that Wii U is no powerhouse to combat the next generation systems from Microsoft and Sony respectively. While I doubt Nintendo's going to do a shout out to free-to-play titles day one, maybe they are looking into some hybrid with some games costing 25-50¢; of course no big titles but perhaps they would let indie studios have such prices for their games if WiiUWare is a reality. Or something as Pong or Centipede/Millipede could be sold for that. I can definately see Nintendo wanting to do something with this market.
Would be nice if it's like a hub of sorts with different rooms; were you meet people and can add them to your friend list through there.WiiU Mii Plaza needs to be a whole damn town they need to do something special if they are going to keep these guys in HD land

Yet they are generation after generation making more money than anyone else in the industry, I think Ben Cousins needs context, sure they are slow to adapt to the market, but as the market leader, they have always shown the real future of gaming... D-pad, shoulder buttons, analog sticks, z-targeting, rumble, motion controls, DS... They don't invent as much as they innovate. Honestly without Nintendo, I think the industry would be in huge trouble.
I just find the slant against Nintendo is always so vocal that it doesn't really make sense...
Thanks for always posting interesting tidbits.

..."my update is Reggie"?
What they mean is that Nintendo doesn't do all the same things that most of the other companies have generally jointly agreed to do. This is in some ways a valid complaint, but it's a terrible statement to make as an across-the-board criticism.
I bet Mr. Cousins would probably appreciate Nintendo's independent streak considering Nintendo took all the "gimmick" and "casual" licks for introducing touchscreen focused gaming, which various Phones and Pads (and the indie studios that support them) enjoy the fruits of today.
It's a strange irony to see, indie developers not liking Nintendo because they aren't in lockstep with their hardware competitors on all factors and vectors.

It does perhaps matter that Nintendo is in a "halfway zone". They're explicitly in the market for dedicated game players, and these players might feel threatened by the idea that their particular niche of the market is being forced to change. The tablet and phones and such? That's in some other market which doesn't directly alter how they play their consoles and such. They can even buy an iPhone on the side, knowing that Apple isn't modifying the hallowed sixth-gen controller in their living room in even the slightest manner.
The times of the great salmon bearThat makes me miss the "Fish x Bear" topics on GAF.
Amazon had a get it on launch day thing for KI:U and it worked very well if they can do that for the hardware I'll stick with them but I do rather pull all my money down someplace and know that its paid for so some bills do not eat up my WiiU monies![]()
I'm sure if the internet existed back in 1889, forums would be full of:
"Nintendo's playing cards suck! They're doomed! Why can't they be more like [insert rival card designer here]?"
I'm finally arriving at the point where a part of me is enjoying the blatantly anti-Nintendo slant. Such a vast portion of the industry and its surrounding media seem to want Nintendo - the one remaining gaming-centric console maker - to fail, and to watch their annoyance as Nintendo defiantly continues not only to exist but to thrive as well? That's some delicious shit right there.
I can only imagine the shrill, dramatic, teary-eyed cries of "it should've been Nintendo" and "if there were any justice in the world, it would've been Nintendo" if one of their competitors should ever exit the industry.. haha..
Supposedly, a lot of developers found the keynote very interesting and were on the same page.Rösti;36411838 said:While not specifically connected to Wii U, this article featuring the views of Ben Cousins takes a jab at Nintendo's philosophy regarding free-to-play content: http://www.develop-online.net/news/40330/Platform-holders-running-scared-of-free-to-play

3DS's eShop is a "little gold mine"
While there still aren't many third-party hits for the 3DS at retail, quite a few developers see a lot of potential for the eShop, the handheld's equivalent of Apple's App Store, featuring smaller downloadable games with much cheaper prices than retail releases ($1.99 to $9.99).
"The eShop has also been an exciting thing to witness and be a part of," says Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham. "Pushmo really kicked things off with a superb title, and with other games like Mighty Switch Force, VVVVVV, and our very own Mutant Mudds following suit, the eShop has proven itself to be a worthy place to go for quality games at an affordable price."
Mel Kirk, marketing VP at Zen studios, adds, "At this point, we really view the eShop as a little gold mine. It seems that a lot of studios have ignored the opportunity and this has provided a very open window for quality content."
His studio recently ported its Zen Pinball series -- which previously found success on PlayStation Network and the App Store -- to the eShop. That title's performance has prompted it to bring Marvel Pinball 3D to the platform in a few months, as well as another game based on a new IP this summer.
Even games originally released to Wii's languishing WiiWare platform have enjoyed a warm welcome on the eShop. Shin'en ported 2008's Fun! Fun! Minigolf to the service earlier this month, and it quickly hit the top of eShop's sales charts in most countries. It's producing two more eShop titles, Art of Balance Touch and Jett Rocket Super Surf, too.
Colors! 3D developer Andersson says, "To me, the eShop is the single most interesting thing... for the 3DS. Not necessarily because we'll see the best games there, but this is where we will see what the platform is made of.
"[It] will show us how Nintendo is different from Apple. The iPhone's eco-system promotes games that can be played in chunks of 5 minutes or less, abandoned without frustration when the phone rings. And that is great, but that also drowns out games that invite deeper engagement. This will not be the case on the 3DS."

It's somewhat related to what we can expect from the Nintendo Network on Wii U and the discussion we had earlier about the positioning of the brand in regard to "little" downloadable games/apps, etc.
I bet Nintendo got this specifically for Bethesda
do u read your post before you submit them?
For me, the eShop is a gold mine both for customers and developers.
I remember being concerned about the eShop few weeks after the thing has been launched. But if they keep releasing quality games on it then this will only get better and better.
Guess this is what Reggie meant said that they won't allow every "garage developer" to release his stuff on it.
Correct! I even generally check my grammar.
I'd really like to know why Nintendo are so awful that everyone apparently wants them to fail.
There are a few projects going on where various NeoGAF members collaborate to create a game. As for an eShop or Nintendo Network game, I think that would be impossible seeing what requirements Nintendo has on companies that are interested in developing games for their platforms. That is anyway if work should be done from our respective homes. A one man operation could be deemed possible though as finding a secure office facility isn't that difficult, a bunker would suffice for example.Let's develop an eShop/NiN game ! Let's make a GAF team ! I'll be a producer & content designer, i'll do some irritating teases and obscure french references that will attract tons of new consumers
I'm serious, there's a bunch of creative-minds around here, we must employ these for an innovative & fun project !
It's kinda like that GF that used to be madly in love with. You were totally inseperatable, completely comfortable with each other, shared all your stupid stories with, had your sense of humor, got along with the parents, everything was sunshine and rainbows.
But over the years, you started to like her less and less. Things she used to do for you, she doesn't do anymore. That favorite activity you guys did together, she got bored of that, and now all your friends are doing it. Meanwhile, she's taken up a hobby of knitting sweaters for cats and buying an electric car because of the dangers of Global Warming. It gets to the point that all you can do is reminisce about the good old days, and that point you just break it off and find somebody else, like that Sony girl next door, who recently took up your old favorite hobbies you used to do.
And ever since then, you just don't like her whenever you see her in your social circle. Every now and then, you see something about her that makes you remember why you fell in love, but its just not the same. It's not good enough anymore. And it's so much worse because your friends keep talking about her like she's so awesome. I mean, every time someone namedrops her or she shows up, she's the center of fucking attention, it makes you sick at all the wasted potential. "Oh man, isn't she amazing!?" Fuck you dude, she isn't amazing anymore, and she hasn't been in years. So screw her, and screw whatever she is doing. It's gonna suck.

just face it dude, even with your troll like analogy that i didn't read because i lost interest in the middle of it, can't give any legitimate reason for disliking Nintendo. Out of all the things Nintendo does wrong, the mistakes they do make that are obvious, they're nowhere near deserving of the lies and slander people put on them. let's just face it, ever since a company who will remain nameless for the sake of being banned started the "Nintendo is kiddie" campaign in 6th gen, it's been the same ever since.
