The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Just picked up a new iPad yesterday and loving it. Bought a few games that I couldn't play on my iPhone..mainly World of Goo. That game fits his device perfectly.

An actual game? I don't see the appeal of this game at all.
Endless challenge, increasing in speed: Tetris-like 'just one more go' feeling.
Try to get further than your friends/your last go: Appeals to basic competitive nature in humans.
Achievements and missions to add incentive: Appeals to the modern achievement-whore gamer.
One button control: Appeals to the masses.
Badass upgrades: Appeals to people who like cool stuff.
Sweet art and music: Appeals to people who like cool stuff.

Hope this helps.

ugh...I thought Superbrothers was a universal app, and it looks like it is but for some reason I bought the micro version (a while ago) thats only for the iphone, so I have to pay for it again to play it on the iPad. Though I dont mind giving money to these guys too much, it's just kind of odd that ther eis an iphone, itouch only version and then there's ipad, iphone, itouch version.

Whats the difference?

Updates will be great, but ready for a sequel. Just sayin'...

You're workin' on it, right? You can tell us. :P

I actually haven't been working on Jetpack Joyride, but I like to pimp it when I can :P

And go grab Monster Dash, since Jetpack is sort of the sequel / prequel to it (And Age Of Zombies, which is the game I worked on :))

Got all these. When will they get retina-iPad updates?

You should get the board game as well. It's a ton of fun and easy for everyone to pick up.

I just bought my first iPad (the new one). Are there games that i really need to have for this device? My main interest for iPad games would be adventure and puzzle games.

So far, my wanted list consists of Sword & Sorcery and Machinarium. Are these playable on the new iPad with the higher resolution?

Spacechem is the best puzzle game in years. It isn't for everyone though, so I'd suggest trying the demo on PC or at least watching some videos.

Not to be a dick, but if you look at the last few pages in this thread, this questions comes up at least once or twice a page-you'll see lots of requests and response with everyone's favorites.

Epoch looks fantastic with the new effects but is it running at native res? There's a noticeable amount of aliasing.

Also started Swordigo, seems fun.

Tried out Fibble for a bit, I'm very impressed. Very polished, graphically impressive, typical 'cute/cartoony' art direction but done very well, fun and intuitive. I was wondering when we were going to see Angry Birds-style simple mobile games with detailed 3D graphics, surprised it hasn't happened earlier.

Looking to pick up some shmups I've missed. Anyone play Taito's Rayforce? Also Warblade looks good. Maybe I'll just buy them blind.

It's not odd at all.

So basically you have 3 types of apps (disregarding retina ready):

1) iPhone/iPod touch apps: works on iPhone, iPod, and "emulated" on iPad, inside a little iPhone window that you can scale at 2x.

2) iPad apps: Only work for iPad.

3) Universal apps: basically has both of the above bundled in one. If you run it on iPhone/ipod, it uses that version, if you run it on iPad, it uses that version.

There's a lot of beef when a developer releases two separate versions (typically the iPad version is denoted "HD" or "for iPad"). Why? because some people consider it a money grab, getting people who own both devices to buy it twice.

In particular, it kind of sucked when an iPad version of an app was not really any different, yet it cost upwards of 5x as much for a handful of extra pixels, essentially. Some argued they should be closer in price.

I used to be like this. I kind of changed my mind when you consider that they might actually be charging less for the two versions than if they were bundled in a universal app. That way you're only paying for what you use.

The other part of the argument is that with retina display and so on, assets are a huge part of the downloads - taking up space on your device when you have no need for them.

Another discussion point is Game Center accounts. With a universal app, the Gamecenter is tied to both versions inside. I can play on my iPad with an iPhone user - they are, after all, the same app, just on two devices. However, separate versions are treated as different apps, so you can't compare scores via game center.

Lastly, there's issues on the dev side. Maintaing more apps, even if they are the same, is more work. Also, having separate apps alters your sales and appstore ranking, as you have two apps.

There' arguments both for an against which ever method a developer wants to release an app separately or as a universal.

So that's where Superbrother made two versions, an iPhone only version for cheap, and the iPad version for more expensive, BUT they make it universal, so it's kind of like you DO get more value you for your money. iPad owners don't feel too ripped off for paying more. I thought it was a nice compromise.
