The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

It seems likely. They may even bring the price of all their iOS stuff down for a few days to promote the game. I'm just glad this one supports 3GS (reportedly). Missed out on DDP2.
I'm not sure about Mushi 1 going down, I kind of think it and DDP DOJ were a pricing experiment since they both came out and stayed at $5 without the usual launch sale they've done before (same goes for the split up Espgaluda II versions with their price points). Whatever the case since it's $5 to begin with, considering their talk on pricing at GDC if it goes on sale I wouldn't expect much but who knows. I could see Bug Panic going down, looks like that has been down to $1 a few times already.
Is there a grazing mechanic in Mushihimesama Futari? That's my favorite part about DDP: Res, just hit 473 mil in smartphone mode for #8 on the rather unpopulated leaderboards. Guess people aren't fond of paying $10+ for the same game twice. Still hope to see more HD releases if it's possible.
No clue about scoring (both Mushi games confuse me there really), but for DDP:R I just don't play the smartphone mode outside of maybe to achievement whore it up or unlock the music to play in arcade mode.

Wish it could share the scores with the iPhone release though...if only cause I had one crazy run way back where I got the second loop and haven't come close to that score since.

What is an asynchronous game? Do you play carcassone in real time?

You can. Or you can start a game and get notifications whenever it is your turn to play with no time limit. That way you can have 50+ games going at once if you really wanted.

Wait I messed up... Is settlers of catan the same as carcassone? I played the board game of settlers of catan the other day and loved it

So Astro, can you sell me on Tigris and Euphrates? What other board game/video game is it similar too??

I figure its only a matter of time till I buy it anyway, but I wanna know what im getting into, haha.
Yeah man I have it so join me. :D Haven't had the chance to play at all yet but I know the game -- very thinky and actually conflict-heavy Euro. Knizia's best, fwiw.

- Forbidden Island: Seems a lot like Operation Eradication/Ghost Stories/Pandemic but maybe a little easier to play/win.
- Elder Signs Omens: I know very little about this, ask Astro :P it looks awesome though. great art.

and of course there is Catan, I havent bought that yet, I have the iPod Touch/iPhone version, it was good, but no Async online, so it didnt get much play.

I can fill in on some of these :D -- Forbidden Island man I'm loving the app. I sort of stopped playing the board game because I have so many other co-ops that I consider slightly better (though I still like FI, it's just very simple) but the app is great. It helps that there are achievements and I dunno the game is actually tougher than I remember it strangely.

Elder Signs I've only played the Android version but I liked it -- if the iOS version has achievements then I might get it -- certainly when the expansions come out. People should know the art and theme are awesome but it's a very lightweight almost Yahtzee-like game (still fun though, much better than Food Fight).

Finger Shot RPG is a fun game. It's universal and it's free. It's a flick board kind of game. A cross between chess in its pieces, pinball in how characters hit each other, and an RPG in how you level up. I like it. And for free, who can complain.

There's multiplayer, too, but I haven't tried it out. Gamecenter me: AJButterJellyTime

I picked up Infinity Blade for 99 cents and don't really like it. I feel like the major selling point is omg graphics & unreal engine, but the game itself feels numbingly dumb. Is the sequel any better?

Yeah, that's pretty much what Infinity Blade is. It's fun to try and beat the God King, but after that, I lost interest. It's a REALLY good tech demo in my opinion.

I never played 2 (didn't enjoy 1 enough to buy 2).

IB sucks. It's only popular because of its graphics. That's all. You aren't missing anything.

some of us like the punchout gameplay

I love Punch Out!! and IB just isn't as fun. I gave it a lot of time because I thought I was missing something. It's just not for me. For sure it wouldn't be as popular if it weren't for its graphics.

Of course, I was being somewhat facetious in my previous post. I understand why people like it.

Infinity Blade is short, repetitive and there's not a lot to it after you memorized all the enemy types, but I still love all the grinding. If you don't enjoy the swiping and filling all those XP bars then yeah, you won't like it. IB is about the grind and it doesn't hide it. Anyone on the fence should give it a try though, can't go wrong for $0.99.

The game is SUPER SLOW at the start btw (enemy attacks), after you go through a few bloodlines there's more of a challenge to be had.

I enjoyed Infinity Blade and it's definitely worth $1. If you go into it with the proper expectations, I don't think you'll regret it.

I fall in that camp, and I had some fun with it. But truth be told, it needed a few other elements to break up the repetition, and I think that's clear to the developers now. It's impossible to say the game wasn't successful in large part due to the novelty of its tech. The premise was definitely cool, too, but it never really goes anywhere. It's set up in a way that makes you want more, but it just isn't there.

So I've always been into business sims, and I've played the heck out of Game Dev Story, Tiny Tower, and TradeNations. I've also enjoyed games like Crime City and Build-a-Lot.

Any other good games in this category?

Then there is stuff im lookin into, but havent bought:

- Puerto Rico: I love the board game, but a few buddies havent been impressed with the iOS version

Catan wouldn't work very well async, as there is almost constant interaction with other players while trading resources. Plus it's not as funny when you say "I have wood for sheep" and no one hears you.

Puerto Rico is my very favorite board game in real life, so I've enjoyed the app for the most part. The app is a little clunky though, and I can see new players getting frustrated trying to learn the rules of the game itself along with the ins and outs of the app. And the big problem: There seems to be no online community to speak of. I've tried to get multiplayer games going once in a while, but I've never been successful. UPDATE: Holy hell I actually got a game started as I'm typing this. Will report back with results. :D UPDATE2: I LOST! What is this madness?!? In summary, great game overall, but I'm not sure I can recommend the app it to people who haven't played the real deal.

Forbidden Island is one of my favorite board-game-to-app-translations. The game itself is excellent (it's one of our favorites for Family Game Night around here) and they really nailed it with the iPad version. It's a fairly light cooperative game. Difficulty levels are available to crank up the flood level if it gets too easy for you. If you don't have anyone to cooperate with it works great as a solitaire game too. Play it after getting your ass kicked by Ghost Stories ten times in a row.

It took me a few plays to figure out that Elder Signs Omens didn't suck. It looks very random at first, but I realized there was more strategy there once I learned how it works. It is a dice rolling game, so there is a tremendous amount of luck involved, but your actions (which hero and/or power you use) can mitigate the luck factor quite a bit, which is where the strategy comes in. It's an excellent game overall. Worth the price of admission just for the atmosphere alone. The soon-to-come update sounds awesome.

For those asking about the online community for Carcassonne, it's huuuuuge. Hell if it were GAF alone you'd never be lonely. The only community that appears more active (board game wise) is Ticket To Ride, who wisely has iPad users playing against the obsessive fans playing on the PC.

With all the talk of iOS board games over the last few pages, I'd like to chip in in favour of Ra.
This one has really hit me hard lately and I've been playing it heaps.

Really looking forwards to Nightfall aswell. I hope they give a few options for house rules, particularly around wound numbers. 20 wound 2 player games are just over too quick.

Still, the iOS board game holy trinity is definitely Carc, Ascension and TtR (particularly ipad version).

Kairosoft's other games. Notably Mega Mall Story. Do it!

I posted this in the iPhone 4S OT but no one replied because that thread is dead as fuck. Maybe someone here can help me?
What's the build quality on the iPhone compared to the iPod Touch? I tossed my 32gb iPod into my backpack while I was in school and apparently the drop into my bag made the iPod dent in the corner. Now the front plate (where the screen is) is popping out. It hasn't broken yet but it's probably going to happen soon at this rate considering I run with it everyday. It's only two months old and I'm kind of pissed.

I was going to pick up an iPhone for my next upgrade (my current provider only has Blackberries and iPhones) but I'm worried if it'll break just as soon. The phone's gonna have to last me 3 years (unless I buy an unlocked iPhone later on to toss onto the iPhone plan I'll be getting).

Another question: Is 1gb a month enough?

Also, to stay on topic with the thread: I finally started playing Game Dev Story and I'm getting my ass handed to me. How do I play this game competently?

I find the build of the iphone is pretty strong i usually have a softish plastic case that fits the back and sides but its generally only in my pocket i dont have it freely moving in bags at all but it survives most bumps and knocks.

About the data usage i get 1.5 gigs of data which i never approach (probably use about 400 meg?) as most of my browsing is usually within wifi (at uni or at home) and you cant download large apps so unless youre gonna go youtube crazy 1 gig shouldnt be an issue in my opinion

Try and take your touch to an apple store and get it replaced even if its not covered by warranty they generally replace the device for a fee which is much smaller than what its worth (had a friend get a brand new iphone 4 for about $100 Australian which was out of warranty)

If I want to play Ascension online will I need the expansion pack?

Same question for Carc. I've had vanilla for a long time but never got Rivers/etc. I already bought the TtR stuff.

No and no. You can play either one online without the need for expansions. When you start the game you can choose what expansions, if any, you wanna play with.

Dammit why am I hooked on yet another carrot-on-a-stick freemium with Tree World? I thought I had broken the curse, not playin any freemium for a whole week!

Dude we're waiting on you in Carc. Now I know why!

I wish Carc. had a lite version. Async games don't really last too long for me (lol) and I feel like I'll waste $10 if I give it a shot

Do you have any local multiplayer opportunities? We play card more like that than async. On iPad it's a good size to put in the middle of a table and everyone joins in. Cheaper than the board game too but if you get into it you could look into getting the physical game

Can someone help with operation eradicate? Why can't I sometimes transfer resources from one player to another, even though we are on the same city or I have the resource guy? Assuming there is a rule I've missed - the tutorial skims over quite a lot

We got some codes for GDC left over for Beat Sneak Bandit - But the thing is i think they might have expired (codes are only good for 4 weeks, not sure when we requested these). If anyone wants to help me try one to see if they still work, pm me.

edit: already handed one out to test.

edit 2: Expired :(

Seconding Slacker's opinion on Elder Sign. After watching the tutorial a few times I still didn't quite get it, and my first game got completely destroyed. In fact I was wondering how it was even possible to win!

But then it clicks and becomes a great, but still pretty tough, game. A must buy if you're interested in the Mythos.

Night colours all over my face.

Any of you guys with 64gb iPad's feel as if its really not enough space anymore with how large some of the games have become? I really hope before I decided to upgrade my 1st gen iPad they increase the size to 120gb in the 4th gen iPad.

size of games is more a result of bad design than evolution of ipad games.
Just do not buy those games

New Star Soccer is my favourite iOS game of all time.

Holy shit it turned me into an addict. I'm quitting now, cold turkey, after leading both Newcastle and Barcelona to domestic trebles & getting all the achievements.

Even though there is a lot of polish needed (a new patch came out last week which fixed a lot), the progression is very good and there is a feeling that the game mechanics leave room for you to get better even after 10 seasons. I loved playing in lobbed through balls for the forwards, made me start racking up the assists.

The lifestyle/happiness part is great as well; I can't help but play all these little stories in my head about how my player is developing. That's pretty much the draw of Kairosoft games for me as well, of course.

Thanks GAF for helping me find this gem. What a treat, but also what a time thief – I probably put in around 10 hours into it.

For Draw Something Free, does your account carry over if you buy the full version and log in with the same account? Can you change the email associated to it to your Facebook email whenever you want, and can you dissociate it from your Facebook email?

Also, WTF at iCloud bookmark sync? It refuses to let me reorganize my bookmarks. Every time I try to move one, it just goes back to where it was.
