Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Could have said that about Metroid. But they did something very special and unique indeed. And yes, I know, "FPA" etc.
I think we're just thinking of two different things. Making a shooter using nintendo franchises doesn't prove anything to 3rd party developers who don't have access to the very things that would make that shooter popular (that is if it even became a success at all).

I wouldn't read to much into who they are hiring and from where... It means very little. Keep in mind this is the team that went from Metroid Prime, a dark atmospheric first person adventure series to the return of DKC, a whimsical, cartoony side scrolling platformer.

Yeah it's just speculation, and this is why i used the word "smells" and put quotation marks for "mature". Still, if 90% of the newcomers you hire in your videogame company have the tendency to work for adult universes, contemporary/futuristic settings

+ the main part of Retro productions not being cartoony

+ hints from "insiders" that the next Retro title will cater to the "core audience", it seems more likely that we'll get a TPA/FPS in a certain background than a colorful platformer.

Theoretical First-Party. 6-Month Launch Window

- Typical Western Gamer
Original Retro FPS (based on hirings)
NST Racer (based on hirings and last patents)
Eternal Darkness (based on trademarks and Dyack mumblings)

- Typical Blue Ocean Gamer
Wii U Sports (based on trademarks and prototype video)
Wii U Play (based on trademarks and prototype video)
Wii U Relax (based on trademarks and recent patents)

- Typical Nintendo Gamer
Pikmin 3 (Developer confirmation)
New Super Mario Bros. Mii (based on trademarks and prototype video)
New EAD Tokyo project (rumor)

It at least proposes some first-party balance more so than ever before. But this is all speculation for now.

Nobody in this thread has played Yoshi's Safari.

LOL, I bought it, but I didn't have the required super scope to play it, sucked because I saved months for it doing chores around the house. I think I ended up changing it in for bill lambeers basket ball, which was amazing, so that was cool at least.

I'd be in heaven if that were close to what we really end-up getting - in addition to whatever offerings third parties offer us. Damn.

I can hear my family now.. "spend some time with us... all you do is play on that WiiU thing! Look - there's a football game on!"

Any new news/rumors?

Is it me or are we getting more info(rumors) on nextbox and PS4 than on Wii U?

I keep hearing this NDA thing for Wii U, but that doesn´t seem to apply on the other consoles. What gives?

Ninja Disclosure Agreement. If you know proprietary information about a nintendo console, and plan too divulge it, the nintendo precogs will know, and Tom Cruise will send out a Ninja Squad to murder you before you can manage to do so.

At least it's already April, E3 isn't very far at all and there is a business meeting at the end of this month that actually will have to talk a bit about the wii u, so we are almost there.

Anyone else got this horrible feeling we're still going to be speculating on WiiU hardware after E3?

Oh, I would say definitely. Especially, if there are no games with visuals above PS3/X360.
Even if it was above PS3/X360, the talk would be if it´s enough for PS4/720 game ports.

Nintendo may only briefly talk about the online service. We might have to wait until GDC for more feature-related announcements.

Unless Wii U is vastly more visually impressive than we've been led to believe, this is going to be one hell of an annoying E3. I really hope the little white box comes through though.

I suspect that we will still be in the dark regarding specs, but I look forward to that talk being diluted by talk of actual games.

I can't wait to see some screen shots or footage of real WiiU games. The waiting is pretty tough.

Both. I think Ninty will deliver a great show but it's going to very short of real detailed information.

Well, they are going to have to be somewhat detailed since the system will be launching months after the show.

I think there will be a lot of confusion/nitpicking from 3rd party software, but I do believe Nintendo will show internally developed software that does look better than current gen stuff.

Damn right it'll be. The bar for a new console is always pretty high, and that's without the "but.. it's Nintendo" phenomenon that we'll be witnessing over and over again. I expect to hear lots of "it looks like a fifth-year 360 game"-type comments, as though many are expecting new machines to come along and blow-away what we already have..

I think that they'll be circumspect, but at least one 3rd party won't be. Some dev will leak enough of the specs that we'll be feasting on them until someone rips a retail unit apart and puts it under a microscope.

I feel like all they really need to show are games.

If they did anything else I'd be worried.

By the way, I can't help but feel that despite all the gibberish and speculation banter, form both ends of the spectrum, once people see a first party title like, say, Mario, or RETRO's new IP in modern HD graphics, everyone will be ultimately surprised and pleased.

Nintendo fans have waited too long for this - the jump from Wii to Wii U is phenomenal, all told.

The Wii specs leaked, the WiiU are gonna leak too.

But yeah, wouldn't be surprised if E3 comes and goes without answering that question, but at least we'll know if it is capable of running ue4.

But 3DS specs never properly leaked though.

After reading the rumors about PS4 and the next XBox, Nintendo could ship with a fucking abacus controller and be good by me at the point. Just, wow. What the fuck are companies thinking? Hope Nintendo doesn't go that route.

DKC is certainly a core title though as well. Just saying. And it also could be a number of Nintendo IPs that they are working on all of which are unlikely to satiate that "mature" crowds appetite. I have my doubts that it is an original IP to be honest.

again, most of that is probably bull. Duel GPU's, internet only console, no used games. Just rumors made up by people to get a rise. Ignore them. I doubt MS will make a $599 console, or that Sony would make it so you can't play used games.

We got a pretty close approximation, but yeah, we had to wait until someone x-ray'd one, after launch, to get precise specs.

And yet we still know nothing of it's CPU, only that it's an ARM 11.

I never underestimate the stupidity of Microsoft or Sony.

Pretty much. Show games that aren't ports and people will be interested.

This seriously. For all my talk in the thread regarding specs and the like, all I need to see is something with A+ tier Nintendo artistry and a quirky gameplay hook with the controller and I'm sold.

Damn you Ninjas and Tom Cruise!

Well, there you go :) and wow at your avatar

Seriously... naively
stupidly, really
I thought it was an error
but then I saw the time and I was like... D'oh!
Well played, original avatar I must say :P
previously inspired avatar just taken to the next level lol. Glad it's causing some amusement.

how funny would it be if E3 was all ports except one single nintendo title.

It's going to take more then that for me. I need to be convinced of good third party support and the hardware specs need to be good enough to future proof it for a while.

They'd also need to show a cohesive online infrastructure.

Having said that. If that Zelda demo was a launch game and it looks like that or better then I'd crack.

I really hope the next Retro Studios game is a whole new IP.
that everything about that IP is 100% from them and not from Nintendo per se

Oh... who am I kidding... they're working on the revival of a dead franchise :(

Well, then we have got these so far:

  • Killer Freaks from Outer Space by Ubisoft
  • Lego City Stories by Traveller's Tales
  • New Super Mario Bros. Mii by Nintendo
  • Pikmin 3 by Nintendo
  • Rabbids project by Ubisoft
  • Retro Studios' project
  • Super Smash Bros. by Project Sora
  • The Legend of Zelda by Nintendo
  • Toki Tori 2 by Two Tribes
  • Two completely new IPs by Ubisoft
These are the ones I can think of at least, and more will come at E3 when new games from Nintendo and third party exclusives are revealed.

I have my doubts that it is an original IP to be honest.

As do I.

I have a feeling that it's either an old IP, Metroid, or Zelda.

There is a risk of doing a new IP at the very beginning of the generation. Most fans are expecting Nintendo staples in HD. Doing a completely new game could confuse some people, or just turn them off. Especially with some shooter. In a sea of other shooters, even one from Retro would turn me off quite quickly.

Another reason is that Nintendo has a habit of placing their new concepts into their old series, rather than coming up with a new series for the concept. Some of you are talking about this uncharted style star tropics, and that is something Nintendo would do. Just like they have recently done with Kid Icarus, they have breathed new life into it with a new concept.
