Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

DKC is certainly a core title though as well. Just saying. And it also could be a number of Nintendo IPs that they are working on all of which are unlikely to satiate that "mature" crowds appetite. I have my doubts that it is an original IP to be honest.

There's not a chance in hell it's DKC, and I disagree that DKC is a 'core' game.

It will be a new FPS/TPA game with some kind of adventure/sci-fi setting and running theme.

I never underestimate the stupidity of Microsoft or Sony.

While dumb, they never do things without reason. MS knew the parts in the 360 would eventually make money, and the 360 did, may have taken two years but it eventually did. Sony was just cocky. They didn't realize they're real business was more reflective of the PSP rather than the PS2 (I still agree with movie bob that sony got lucky with the PS1 and PS2).

Here's hoping that Retro's new game is awesome.

Oh wait, it's Retro, of course it is. ;)

Pretty much this. I'd really like to see Retro do a Zelda-like adventure, personally, but I'll be eating up whatever their game turns out to be because I know they are putting their hearts into it...

There's a reason for the online DRM shit, which many companies have done on the PC, it's just not a good or smart one.

While it wouldn't surprise me, it's not gonna happen. Killer Freaks From Outer Space should be there.

I don't expect there to be more than 2 or 3 third party exclusives shown though.

I'm wondering if we're going to see any honest-to-Nayru megatons as far as game reveals go. Especially in the age of multi-console portmania.

Nintendo Pax plans, no Wii U mentioned as expected[/B
Looks like, except a surprise, that it will focus on the 3DS. Maybe some 3rd parties like Ubisoft will say some tidbits about the Wii U version of AC3 for example.

No surprise there. Nintendo have lost their minds to not say anything at all of consequence for a year.

Oh no worries.. I'm a patient guy.

I'm making the most of this time, using it to wrap-up anything I wanted to play or replay before the end of the generation. My yearly run through BG&E, my first run through A Boy & His Blob, all of the Luigi content in the Galaxy games, at least one of the two big RPGs for the Wii, and maybe a re-exploration of Cyrodiil. Even without the launch, it's going to be a good gaming year.

(And in the middle of all of this, a biiiig move in April to a really sweet neighborhood! Getting it over with before any of the big festivities begin!)

After we get within a month or so from Launch Day, I'll be too wound-up to play any video games.. I'll be glued to the internet.
Do you live in a world where there are 48 house in a single day? If I get a chance to play 5 minutes of Dillon's Rolling Adventure I'm lucky :)

Yeah, time will mend our impatience for Wii U news, E3 is approaching quickly :p And i bet some people will regret these moments of wait & tease when they'll have the controller in their hands, not that it will be disappointing, but the pre-launch period is so exciting and fresh :)

Ideaman, I know you're French so it's not your fault but you misspelt excruciating.

Retro making an FPS is an utter waste of time considering there are already plenty of devs doing that for Nintendo, and with much more popular franchises than what they will whip out. Total waste of time.
It will be an RPGS set in the Metroid universe where a dimensional rift has torn a whole through to the Mushroom Kingdom

Anyone else got this horrible feeling we're still going to be speculating on WiiU hardware after E3?
Yup.

Damn right it'll be. The bar for a new console is always pretty high, and that's without the "but.. it's Nintendo" phenomenon that we'll be witnessing over and over again. I expect to hear lots of "it looks like a fifth-year 360 game"-type comments, as though many are expecting new machines to come along and blow-away what we already have..
What they need to do is only demo games on stage that either use the controller amazingly or high end graphical ones. No point showing straight ports.

Betting this game will have a major backlash after reveal, no matter what it is.

Yep - can't please everyone, and you know we'll get people saying whatever they made is a shit choice and a waste of talent.

And Zelda at E3? Really? I'd say too soon, but by the time E3 hits it'll have been a while since Skyward Sword I guess...

Still, I reckon they'll save it for 2013 E3, to soften the blow of any Micro/Sony console reveal.
Zelda trailer+ Metroid trailer + Mario trailer. B E L I E V E.
It's why I think they're leaving this years E3 to third parties, so they can stock up on games for next year.

As do I.

I have a feeling that it's either an old IP, Metroid, or Zelda.

There is a risk of doing a new IP at the very beginning of the generation. Most fans are expecting Nintendo staples in HD. Doing a completely new game could confuse some people, or just turn them off.

I disagree. There is no better time to introduce new IP's than at the beginning of a generation.

Few examples:

Halo 1 at Xbox's launch made Xbox a respectable competitor.
Pikmin came out in first 4 weeks of GameCube's launch.
Uncharted came out pretty soon in PS3's life.
Red Steel 1 sold extremely well as a launch game for Wii.
Raving Rabbids sold extremely well as a launch game for Wii.
Lumines became popular as a PSP launch title.
Soul Calibur was a brand new IP that launched with Dreamcast.
Marvel vs Capcom was brand new IP that launched within first 3 months of Dreamcast.
Ready 2 Rumble was a brand new IP that sold extremely well at Dreamcast's launch.
Hydro Thunder was a brand new IP that sold extremely well at Dreamcast's launch.
Gear's of War 1 came out at the end of the Xbox 360's first year and had big success.
Gravity Daze is a brand new IP for PS Vita coming this summer.
Condemned was a new IP that came out at 360's launch.

Interest in a console usually is at its highest in the first 2-3 years, and then interest begins to dip.

If Nintendo is going to release a shitty new IP like Steel Diver, then yeah, you'll get shit sales. But consumers are always up for a new IP if you give them a genre that they are actually interested in. It all comes down to the genre more than anything.

A new IP in the action adventure genre or first person shooter genre will gain more interest than other genres.

We saw the Spaceworld 2000 demo before Majora's Mask was released. And the next year, Wind Waker was revealed.

Who knows. Maybe they'll focus on 3DS Zelda.

Weren't they done with SS for a while too? I recall something about them polishing the game etc for a while before it's release.

StarTropics is just a cool "could/would/should really work if true" dream pairing of IP to a developer that a lot of folks get when they look at Retro's strengths (world design, both artistic and lore; distinctly Western influence that jives with many of the original premises/elements of StarTropics as they're right in the heart of America) and Nintendo's current top tier offerings. I'd love to see Retro do something action adventure with meticulous environments and an exploration/dungeon crawler slant, but more Indiana Jones than Zelda really. Basically, a Chocolate action-adventure game to NoJ Zelda's vanilla.

Betting this game will have a major backlash after reveal, no matter what it is.

Just how it goes man. Remember the posts/threads that came up when Retro was confirmed to be working on DKCR at E3 2010?

Is it normal for a new console that at worst is 7 months away from being released not having any info yet on it other then a name and it's controller? I find this to be quite fucked up with the silence from Nintendo.

I would love something like that. Also what were some of the posts regarding Retro's DKCR reveal? I don't recall much because I was too happy that day.

A modern Startropics will probably get labeled by Sony fans as an Uncharted ripoff.

Naaaw.. I only work three days per week, giving me a four-day weekend every week. My free time has greatly benefited from this relatively new schedule (started in November).. I get my around-town errands, chores, and "honey do" tasks over with in one day, leaving me with plenty of time for gaming. :)

A modern Startropics will probably get labeled by Sony fans as an Uncharted ripoff.

I know that many of them grew-up in the 1990s and were in diapers when StarTropics 1 came out 20+ years ago, so let this be an opportunity for them to learn about one of the many gaming series that came before their time.

Otherwise, they can think whatever they want.
(yes, I just turned the "kiddeh" thing around on them. Ha. Ha. Ha.)

So what game does everyone want Retro to do?

I'd really love to see their take on Zelda, but I really want them back on Metroid. I'd like to see a proper execution of what Other M should have been. For starters the could have the platforming and acrobatics in third person, and let you change to first person perspective without limiting your movement. So, pretty much Prime with a third person element.

I've seen many people bring up StarTropics.

That seems to be pretty isolated to Gaf, as far as I can tell. The popular answer in other places is Zelda or Metroid.

While I agree with the idea that new IPs usually released soon during the console's launch periods (and is usually what they do: introduce one early, then make sequels or games that use the same engine) tend to do well, because of that.
The Dreamcast examples are really horrible examples. :p
Since 3 out of those 4 were arcade games that were released months/a year after arcades and Soul Calibur was a "sequel" to an arcade/PSone game.

Also, been part of a launch lineup might do well for a first release, but not for the sequel; even worst if there a lot of bad-mouth of the original release. See Red Steel, and the (nearly in everything superior) sequel; yet the sequel sold less than half than the first game.

On the other hand; IPs like Just Dance did incredible well; even when it was released years after launch. So, sometimes is not only catering to a demographic that might buy your product, but catering to one that might get interest in said product.

So what nintendo teams could have a launch,or early wii u game,

(yes, I just turned the "kiddeh" thing around on them. Ha. Ha. Ha.)

Alot of todays "Hardcore" weren't even around pre ps2/GC era.

Soul Calibur was a "sequel" to an arcade/PSone game.

True but lets be honest. Most people who bought Soul Calibur did not know about the PSone game or the Arcade version lol. They bought it because it was the best looking fighting game on the most powerful console Dreamcast (during the time before PS2 came out).

I do see your point though.

Alot of todays "Hardcore" weren't even around pre ps2/GC era.

I know. Which is why when they try that "kiddy" shit, I have to fight the temptation of reminding them that many of us Nintendo fans have Zelda save files that are older than they are. {*shakes cane*}

And back on the topic of StarTropics for a moment.. Congressman seems right: NeoGAF's Nintendo crowd is pretty enthusiastic for StarTropics compared to other sites I visit. Sad..

Neogaf's Nintendo fans should start some kind of campaign to get people interested in the idea of a modern Startropics.

Nintendo does listen to fans when they ask for franchises to return (Metroid, Kid Icarus, Punchout, Donkey Kong Country). Just not when it's Earthbound lol.

As I've said earlier in the thread, I think Nintendo's first party playable show line up will include:

  • New Mario (NSMB Mii or EAD Tokyo Mario U)
  • Pikmin 3
  • Monolith Soft's Mysterious UFO JRPG
  • Retro's New Masterpiece
  • Mii Play
  • Excite Racer

But here is my question about NSMB Mii and Pikmin 3 both being there...who is developing what? It was my understanding EAD Group 4 developed both the New Super Mario games and the Pikmin games?

Monolith's last game was Skyward Sword, which was codeveloped by the Disaster team. Quite a few of the developers you mentioned have more than one team, some even more than one studio. Monolith has four or five teams in two studios for example (two console teams, two or three handheld teams). Studios like Next Level or Intelligent Systems usually work on more than one game at a time, too. And Noise and NST are not handheld exclusive. You also forgot skip and quite a few studios currently in limbo that have close ties with Nintendo, like Treasure, Ganbarion, Arika or Sandlot.

Is it normal for a new console that at worst is 7 months away from being released not having any info yet on it other then a name and it's controller? I find this to be quite fucked up with the silence from Nintendo.

We didn't learn about the official price and release date for the Wii until September 2006 for North America.

As for 3DS, Nintendo revealed the price and release date in September 2010 for Japan's February 2011 launch date and a TBA March 2011 release for North America. In January 2011, Nintendo announced the official NA price and release date.

they've been working on Pikmin 3 for awhile? it wouldn't surprise me if they had both of these finished, w/ some outside help.

this is also identical to what i believe their first year line-up will be, although i'm still hoping for some nice nintendo published games, like sonic dimensions :(

do we know that the UFO art is the wii-U game or the 3DS game? So far we know they are working on two games, and we have 2 pieces of art. Don't think we know which belongs to which.

Not names or anything, no.

Edit: DO NOT PM ME ANYONE

Edit 2: I also don't know any real details and I wouldn't say them if I did know. I always get like 100 PMs from this thread.

Seriously, i would tell everyone something else, lol

Response 1: "Its Zelda!!!"

Response 2: "Its a new ip fps!!!"

Response 3: "Its dog trainer U feat. Uggie"

Response 4: "Its Wii U Music! David Hasselhoffs greatest hits edition! "
