The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

I only know the real boardgame, and it's fairly simple, but enjoyable. Not sure how suited it is for async play though, because it's co-op and doesn't have much to do in a single turn... :/

Yeah I take back some of what I said about FI. On normal difficulty with random roles imo it's still quite challenging. Plus the achievements are good -- don't know if I will ever be able to beat that game on Extreme or whatever. Kinda wish Ghost Stories had achievements too so I could log my rare triumphs in that game.

Yeah, I dont really need async in co-op games, I mean I wont complain about getting async in any game, but the whole reason I bought Ghost Stories, and why I would buy Forbidden Island is to sit down with a few friends and play through it (or die over and over and over in Ghost Stories case :P).

I just want....no, NEED it for Neuroshima Hex, Id love to play that game more, but its hard to do that sometimes.

Agreed, NH has a pretty amazing interface and is a really fun game yet I haven't played it in months (after I got good at beating the CPU on Hard) b/c no async.

By simple I mean the mechanics are really simple, and once you understand how the game works every game plays veeeery similar, there's not much strategy to it. And because it's a coop game, there's not really any AI that can get smarter as you rank up the difficulty, it's just the setup that makes it harder to win, which can become a bit frustrating IMHO... challenging, yes, but if you have to use the same level of strategy to beat the game on easy or extreme and the only difference is a luck factor, then eeeeeeh. Also, game isn't meant for async anonymous play, it's really more of a tabletop game.

EDIT: Yes, NH is awesome, I agree. I don't understand why it doesn't have async either, it'd be PERFECT for it. simple concept, short games, easy to pick up.

EDIT2: Also just got a hilarious Carc invite: "Slade has invited you to play a game with awesome animals" CUTOFF. Took me a few seconds to realize that "awesome animals" was a gaffers nickname and not just some weird Carc invite style.

Get it, it's honestly great and a lot of fun, I can see myself spending a lot of time on it again after that update. It's just so well made, dang.

Yeah, I would buy it. but It might be a good idea to wait till the update, since they will probably do a sale with it.

It seems to drop in price every month so I'll probably have it before the update comes.

Grabbing Ascension tonight if you guys want to show me the ropes / inflate your record. :)

Send me an invite once you have it and wanna play :p

Also, I'm scared of getting Super Meat Boy on my iphone. Frustration AND a throwable handheld? I don't have that much spare money :/

To be fair I didn't give the tutorials enough attention. I started and then just wanted to get back to Monsters Ate My Condo. I'm so bad.

At least for carc you are naughty, it's not a complicated game at all

Neuroshima hex is probably the other one you were thinking of?

Can't speak for the player count, but it's a good time to join the fold on GAF. Haven't been able to get a TtR game going yet (no async play makes it kind of tough), but we've got some games going with players new to Carcassonne. Feel free to join us!

Is there a community thread for its board games? Perhaps it's worth starting one?

I'd play good money to get a Through the Ages port on iOS, oh god.

For now, the biggest upcoming release is by far the official Dominion app, no release date yet but in February the devs said "in the next few weeks", so game&announcement are overdue.

What about these games? Seems to be a good developer at least. Agricola looks to be well-received in the board game thread, too.

So some questions from someone looking to possibly pick up their first iOS device. Mostly around the iPod touch, since the I'm not a phone guy and the iPad is kinda already covered by my netbook.

1. For a modern iPod touch, what stats of phone does it compare to. Like, can it run 3S games? 4 games? 4S games? Not really sure how that works.

2. Are there any limitations for the touch versus the phones or iPad? Sometimes it seems to be a bit ignored compared to the other two. I can do any of the connectivity stuff if I have WiFi access right? Nothing big that I'll be missing out on?

As far as I know the main thing about the Touch Vs the Phones is that it lacks a Gyroscope, has a worse screen and camera than the phones, and the processor is slightly slower than the base model iPhone 4.

Anything I'm missing?

Edit: The screen isn't as bright/has as good of viewing angles. It is still Retina resolution.

All this board game talk just makes me want a true iOS Arkham Horror all that much more. Having it all in app form would make it far easier to set up and play at the drop of a hat, without need to bring a literal mechanic's toolkit full of tokens and cards out.

I just hope if it ever does happen it'll have true deck shuffling, and not the RNG-silliness the current Arkham companion app does where the same card can be drawn multiple times in a single game.

Yeah, the Touch is pretty much worthless if iOS gaming is the goal - it started life lacking current features and for whatever reason it has been pretty much ignored while the iPhone and iPad march on. Personally, I picked up the iPad as a laptop/netbook replacement.

True, are there release dates for them? I already have Ascencion&expansion and food fight I'm just waiting for a sale :p

"spring" is so vague... If they come to iOS, they'll be day1 purchases. Food fight and ascencion are so well made, i have full faith in the developer to make good ports. It's gonna be a glorious boardgame spring.

I'm just more excited about Dominion because it's one of my favourite reallife-boardgames and has incredible replayability with random card choices and expansions.

Nightfall was submitted last week ... so is just pending approval for release

No idea on release dates. Maybe someone here knows.

Yeah, I've heard Dominion is good. I have the unofficial iOS version but haven't played it. Tougher than Ascension? I have to ease my way in to these card games, haha.

Cool. What's that game all about?

Really? Well that's a shame, I've got no interest in the iPad and sure as heck don't want to pay for a phone data plan. I was thinking that the touch would be a nice way to get into iOS gaming on the cheap. I was thinking that it seemed to be a bit ignored, but I thought that was just because most folks had phones, not because it was lacking.

Dominion has the same collecting cards mechanic, but IMHO it's easier than Ascencion. But definitely LOADS of fun. The unofficial app isn't too bad, you should try to get into it, once you've got it figured out it's solid, the presentation is just pretty bad :p plus, no expansions.

The latest iPod touches are not bad. That was my first iOS gaming device and it plays everything the iPhone can. The only difference is it has less memory than the equal generation iPhone.

The only game I would notice differences on are games like Infinity Blade and Real Racing 2.

Problem is I feel like I got burned on Food Fight, I'm not certain I should jump into Nightfall.

Nightfall is way more like Ascencion than Food Fight. Food Fight and Agricola aren't too similar to the others, while Ascencion/nightfall/summoner wars are more similar.

Have you tried Ascencion yet? Might wanna try that one first and see if you like it, i you do you'll most likely also enjoy Nightfall.

Agreed, it's easier than Ascension (though Ascension's not bad) and just generally a better intro to the deck-building genre (which we're all so used to by now but which is a pretty novel concept that takes a few plays to click). I wouldn't recommend trying to learn from the unofficial app though, it's a tad rough around the edges and definitely not intended as an intro to the game, more just a tool for players.

I'd be cool with an iOS board games thread but it's a bit tricky. It'd have to focus on online play and be in community (like the Carc thread is) -- trouble is not everyone owns every game. Then again the cool part is it would be a great place to find players for lesser-known games like Tigris & Euphrates and Samurai -- tap into the existing Carc & Ascension communities. Think that general discussion should be in this thread though probably. Maybe like an iOS board-game community thread? Ideally someone would list every major game and then the GCs of everyone active in those games. Bit of workload but doable and it could be great at revitalizing forgotten but excellent games like Samurai.

Really looking forward to Nightfall myself. As far as the dev, I would say very competent (as in game works pretty well, looks decent, and has notifications that WORK now ahem TTR Pocket). What bums me out about Ascension though and most of these games is lack of chat and lack of persistent rating. I mean the Words with Friends guys turned slapping chat onto a shitty Scrabble clone (that's worse than Scrabble) in a multi-kajillion-dollar business you'd think others would get the clue but alas.

Also for all these games if you really want to do your diligence, you can check out the rules online. E.g., Ascension is explained in overview here and has the full rules link as well: http://www.ascensiongame.com/howtoplay

OT but some interesting news for iOS Brazil-GAF, good to know that Apple keeps trying to work out the legal kinks (yeah, I'm still holding out hope that we'll eventually get the games and I'll be able to stop using a foreign account for that. Lolz). I'm also curious about how Apple and Amazon plan to deal with the (pretty much nonexistent) e-book market here.

While kicking him, I slipped something into his pocket.
Thank you!
As you saw in my reply, I didn't mean to come off as such a jackass... it was a poorly executed form of sarcasm (and a not-so-subtle dig at people who balk at paying only $1 for some games).

So I'm going to unlock Slam Dunk King :)

get an ipad. much better solution.

You know a game that I would love to have async on? Civilization Revolution. Yea, it's civ lite, but it's still pretty damn good for a portable experience.

YOU JUST WANT A THREAD FOR EVERYTHING DON'T YOU!!!!

p.s. I'm still trying to get the iPad App thread together, it's been an exhausting few days.

Why do you rule out the iPad entirely? When I bought mine in lieu of a new laptop I figured it would only get occasional use - I was totally unprepared for how much I would end up using it, far beyond what I would have considered using a laptop or netbook for, to the point that my daily habits have been irrevocably changed. The thing literally goes to bed with me at night I use it so much.

Less memory and missing hardware features like the gyroscope pretty much means it can't run everything an iPhone can by definition.

I'd love a board game thread for the iPad. Ever since I got it I've been looking for great board games to play on it.

I'd take a shot at it, but the idea of making a list of players for every game seems really cumbersome. Plus I'm no expert. There must be an easier way?

Picked up Battleheart recently. Such a great little RPG/RTS game. I love that they're not afraid to up the difficulty; it's a simplee game, but it really demands mastery of its simple mechanics to get the most out of it. It might be my favorite game that I've played all year.

I can probably do it -- it would involve shutting down the Carc and lesser-used Ascension threads though and migrating them. I'm not sure it should be a central place for discussion of non-online-games though. Maybe just a list for reference and the rest just have be discussion of community games mostly? Hm I dunno . . . that is a lot of work. :p

How does it compare to Heroes vs Monsters, which recently went free? They look really similar but I'm not sure what the difference is/if Battleheart is a lot better.

Man, everyone keeps trying to sell me on an iPad. So I have already have a netbook which I mainly use to code in Visual Studio 2010, play Europa Universalis 3, and MAME. None of which the iPad does so I'm not paying $500 for that. I wanted something portable that I could fit in my running backpack and use on the bus ride back from work after I jog in, so the iPad is a total no go.

I've not played Heroes vs. Monsters, but I'll definitely give it a shot now that I know about it. I have a feeling I'll be jonesing for some more of this genre once I'm done with Battleheart. I can confidently report that it's more than worth the 3 dollar asking price.
