GAF Plays: Mass Effect series (unmarked spoilers)

I needed more Mass Effect 2 before 2 drops, so I picked up a couple dlc missions. I never played through them before when they first released, but figured on my current pc runs, It will be nice to have a complete playthrough.

Finished LotSB last night, and wow, that was definitely incredible, glad to finally see what the hype was about, terrific mission, and the music!

So I'm on the human reaper phase 2 (insanity) and I am so totally fucked. I don't have any squadmates with me that are good against armor (I have Morinth and Jack) and my last save is basically to restart the mission. I got him down to 50% one time before he started destroying the level and bs killed me. I just want to share my complete and utter frustration with you.

I'm so close to getting all the PS3 trophies too :((((((((

I think reloading your autosave at the start of the battle allows you to select different weapons if you need 'em.

I'm contemplating buying Kasumi and Arrival to try and finish out the achievements. Are both worth it?

If you're just completing a game, then no. Kasumi's mission is interesting, but if you have no interest in her as a squadmate, it's not worth the money. If you're just starting an ME2 playthrough, then I highly recommend her.

Arrival is just meh in general.

Should have taken Thane and Miranda, IMO.

I reloaded with the starting pistol which is ok against armor, which is how I got him down to 50%.....I think it's still possible to win but I'll need to play a perfect game with no mistakes
Ugh

I'm currently playing ME2. I finished 1 quite some time ago.

I'm 17 hours in and just about to recruit The Assassin. I've been doing a few side quests such as Miranda's, Jacks and Jacobs loyalty quests.

I have and I get "information not available"

Sounds like the Lair of the Shadow Broker glitch, if you don't ask about Samara before telling Liara the Shadow Broker intel you can't get it from the console for some reason, Bioware never fixed it.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a way around it besides loading an earlier save.

Wait. I've literally just done this bit.

Liara has gone from her office now, you'll know why if you've played the DLC. I hadn't started the assassin mission at that point, I just went and accessed her terminal, read the text and that promoted me to go and speak to someone who then prompted the start of the mission.

Unless, we're talking about something else.

Sounds like he finished the Shadow Broker mission.

Do you have the nuke launcher? Two shots plus some chip damage owns that thing on insanity. I took Kasumi and Jack and just scavenged power ammo from the harbingers to charge up the second shot.

It works fine for Thane, but the bug wont let you get Samara as it doesn't seem to progress to telling you who to talk to next and just exits the console screen.

I'm not sure if that is the problem he is having, but I was doing a quick renegade run through and only had a save hours beforehand so lost a good bit of progress because the console wouldn't give me the info.

I just redid it with Grunt's squad incendiary ammo, took him out in 2 tries no problems. Mordin was really useful for heavy burning the harbingers down quickly so I could focus on the goddamn reaper. I never bothered to research the Cain on this playthrough or do alot of other things because Insanity difficulty was sometimes annoyingly hard on the boss fights

I love Thane, but I always picked Miranda and Mordin. I really didn't use anyone else outside of their loyalty missions.

Picking Samara/Morinth and Jack just seems like an odd pair to me.

I picked them because Morinth could field pull which worked great with my area warp, and dominate is nice sometimes too vs. collectors. Jack's shockwave is good for husks and knocking collectors off the sides of things, both of them are good against barriers (jack's warp ammo helps here)

mostly i just forgot the whole 2nd phase of that boss fight was just straight up armor

I finished up the game today, starting off at the Reaper, too. Shockwave spam is so broken against husks, lol. I also managed to have a perfect suicide mission run. Everyone but Zaeed died, so I now have two ME2 saves at the opposite ends of the spectrum ready and waiting for March 5th.

I would also like to know how you managed it as I too thought you had to have two surviving squad mates at the end, who did you make do what?

I need help with some ME2 modding. I saw this great tweak that replaces the loading screens with a simple image of the logo (here) that's supposed to improve loading times, but on my computer it makes loading LONGER. Now it takes 30-60 seconds when before it was never worse than 20 seconds. Feels bad man. I have a modestly speedy hard drive and I just extracted the ZIP files in the BioGame/Movies folder.

So, I've been reading around about Mass Effect..

I've read that it's good to get a squad member with the Decryption ability or something like that.

So when I see an item I can't open that says "Decryption level too low" or whatever, does that mean that Shepard's ability is too low, or my whole squad's level is too low?

I mean, will I be able to open it with another character?

I think it's squad based, but the shortcut is just to take Tali everywhere you go and spam electronics and decryption in her stats.

It's squad based. If you have Tali with you, you'll be fine.

However, you shouldn't really need to worry too much about it. On my first playthrough, I played as a soldier and rotated party members frequently, but I still found the best items in the game and had plenty of leftovers all the time.

If you find something you can't open on a planet surface, just go to the menu, jump back to the normandy, and bring Tali down with you. Otherwise, you're probably fine just playing it however you want.

That's why I was confused, I had Tali with me.

This is from the Bring Down The Sky DLC, btw. Did it right after being promoted to Spectre status, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

It is squad based, so you only need one member with the abilities to be able to open containers and stuff.

If you have Tali (and Garrus and I think Kaiden both also have the required skills) put points into Electronics and Decryption up to the "Master" unlock in each and you wont have a problem with anything as long as they are with you.

1. Romance after suicide-mission

Is it possible to start a romance with Miranda after the suicide mission?

I thought I made everything, to start a romance with her (after the Jack-Mission, for example, I stayed on the side of Miranda, so that Jack went disloyal) but when I passed the Omega-4-Relay, there was no romance-cut-scene with Miranda. I just see Shepard looking at Ashley framed photo in a video sequence before the suicide mission.
Now, after the suicide-mission, when I get in her office, all she says is that she has no time to talk to me.
What have I done wrong?

I only haven't played the Arrrival-DLC and the side-quest with the Salarian on Omega.

2. Legion

I thought, there were two options for me:

a) Take legion to the Normandy,
b) Give him to Cerberus and receive lots of credits.

IIRC I have choosed the option to make the decision later. But Legion is not on the Normandy (I looked for him at the VI). Have I understand something wrong?

Pretty sure you have to choose some certain options with Miranda to get it on, I could be wrong but you can only romance her if you choose the right one and after the suicide mission if you haven't had that conversation yet, though this is just from memory.

As for Legion, you don't get a choice to take him aboard the Normandy at first, it is then once you are onboard do you get to choose what to do with him, maybe you selected the wrong option, you are going to the room behind the medical bay right?

I'm almost certain you can't do romances after the suicide mission. You must not have talked to her enough during your playthrough, because she'll have new conversation options after certain points in the game.

Welp, finally completed everything in ME2. First time playing the Arrival too and it was... kinda lame. Choices were absolutely insignificant and BioWare went for the low hanging fruit of the obvious indoctrination ploy. Plus, it gives Harbinger an excuse to talk even more shit to Shepard. God damn, fuck that guy.

But you get to see Admiral Hackett for the first time, so I guess it wasn't a total waste.

Welp, time to go out and buy ME3.

Recently rebought ME2 and played through the DLCs for the first time.

-Lair of the Shadow Broker was definitely my favorite, as it was the most substantial and had a lot of story content. Seeing
Liara become the Shadow Broker was cool, and I enjoyed reading the dossiers on the terminal in the SB base
.

-Arrival was a waste (could've simply read a summary).

-Just finished Overlord tonight. It had some good tension/atmosphere, and some nice views when driving around in the Hammerhead. It was shorter than I expected, though (just 2 or 3 hours). Plot was OK but predictable, and the dialogue was a bit too cheesy/cliche for my liking at times (though there's a good chance the rest of ME2 was like this, it's been awhile since I played it). I was actually surprised at how easy the end decision was for me considering the comments I had heard about it. I'm the kind of guy who will sit there for 15 minutes deliberating on an important decision in a game (and have in the past with ME decisions), but in this instance it felt natural to
take David with me
.

Also the noise the VI made was annoyingly loud compared to everything else. Can't imagine how that must have been for people playing with headphones.

Now on to ME3. :D

Remember when we were all posting in this thread playing through our beloved series again to ensure the most awesome ME3 experience possible.....ya that was before ME3's ending shattered our dreams to pieces and pissed on what was left of our hope for the ME universe by literally blowing everything up....ah the good ol days....

I'll be starting a ME2 renegade run to refresh myself on the story and characters. So what kind of texture mods are there? The OP only had character textures, but are there also enviroment texture mods?

If there are, I don't know if it would be for the entire game. You might try digging around for some, but I've only ever seen character texture mods as well.

Wait, what? I own and beat overlord ages ago, I don't remember this. Love the tower of terror.

Eh guess that doesn't sound like a very specific reference to me. I'd have to see it to see if it's particularly similar otherwise. The act itself is common enough in fiction to be a trope of its own.

Seems like the right place to ask:

I want to import my completed 360 ME1 save into my PC version of ME2. So basically I need a tool to convert a 360 ME1 save to a PC ME1 save. I've found some tools online, but they can only convert ME2 saves instead of ME1 saves.

Can anyone help?

Does the 360 ME2 Platinum Hits version come with a working Cerebus code with new copies?

I'm getting conflicted info. Some say it does, some not. Some say all codes expired Janurary of this year.

Does anyone know? I got the damn code on my PC version, but just bought a used 360 version and didn't get one (obviously). Then I saw the platinum version for like $2 more than what I paid used.

Sorry if it has been posted before, searched this thread with "platinum code" and came up with nothing.
