Nintendo Registers "Super Mario 4"

I'm kinda late to this, but a Super Mario "4," is fukken huge news. For one, it REMINDED me that the series used to be numbered. And unlike Sega, most of their non-numbered Mario platformers have been stellar and sold quite well, so a return to numbering should NOT a exploitative cash-grab, it probably means this is going to be, again, fukken huge.

Am I getting ahead of myself? I'm already hyped.

Well it depends, how good do you think Mario Kart 7 was compared to the other, non numbered Mario Karts?

Oh, God.. Please let this be a return to 2D platforming. Preferably with an art style similar to this:

A Mario game with this art style would be freaking awesome. NSMB was a logical choice and obviously worked, but felt so uninspired and well, boring.

A new numbered Super Mario that didn't look/play like NSMB (physics wise) would be awesome. I would really like a cel-shaded 2-D Mario platformer with the charm of SMW. A world map that was as awesome as SMW would be great too. I also wouldn't mind a Cel-shaded Yoshi's Island game, but that's just another pipe dream.

Actually, if we're NOT going to be all pedantic about "Super Mario" versus "Super Mario Bros.", the next game would be "Super Mario 12."

1. SMB
2. SMB2
3. SMB3
4. SMW
5. SM64
6. SMS
7. NSMB
8. SMG
9. NSMBW
10. SMG2
11. SM3DL

...provided you ignore Yoshi's Island and the whole SMB2j/USA thing.

(If the NES Earthbound had ever been released, its "Have you played Super Mario Bros. 7? I’m still playing Super Mario Bros. 3. It’s been quite a challenge for me!" would have seemingly referred to New Super Mario Bros..)

I hope Nintendo at least attempts to approach the visual bar set by Rayman Origins if the next Mario game is indeed 2D. Rayman looks glorious.

Not really understanding the 4.

The 7 in Mario Kart made sense.

Super Mario 4 suggests it's a follow-up to Super Mario bros. 3.

So what was Mario World? What was New Super Mario Bros?

Seems either like an attempt at sales/marketability or simply gaf looking too into a URL.

Rayman Origins's artstyle is an evolution of the original Rayman

NSMB's is a re-imagining of Super Mario Bros. 1

IMO, they aren't meant for each other, but that doesn't mean that NSMB's art can't evolve, like SMB1 to SMB3. Even SMW and Yoshi's Island (despite the latter's incredible organic artwork) inherited some of that "blocky" platform layout.

SMB's gameplay is better for it.

There is a good chance that it will be even more heavily focused on 4 players .. but then again if it is a 3DS game ...

I'm really excited for this! I forced myself through most of new super mario on the ds. But I just couldn't do it on the Wii. Using that same horrible artstyle on the Wii version just made the game seem like a rehash to me. The game could quite possibly be the 2nd coming of jebus but I wouldn't know. It's gathering dust in the closet. I couldn't make it past the 2nd world thanks to the visuals.

So basically NSMB is the Code Veronica of the series.

So the logo for this game will be "4 Super Mario"?? haha

Good-Feel's too busy making terrible games based on C-tier Nintendo franchises.

The FUCK? Wario Land Shake-It and Kirby's Epic Yarn were amazing!!!

What we want:

Artsy-realistic style has no place in Mario games.

Here's hoping this is an epic 2D game in the vein of SMB3/Super Mario World with multi-plane stages similar to Mutant Mudds.
I personally hope they abandon the NSMB style in favor of a more classic 2D-art style.
I would love it if they replicated the box art of Super Mario World in the actual in-game graphics!!

I'm breaking my "no gaming side" policy (again.)

The Jenny Lewis GAF Club needs to stick together... because as near as I can tell, it's just you and me.

Seriously though, semi-on topic; was there anyone who didn't giggle like a little kid when they saw Mario 3 premiere on the big screen?

I hate all of you that were downplaying World. All of you.

And while I wouldn't really want Mario to jack Rayman Origins' artsyle, anyone calling it ugly is indeed crazy. It's a beaut, and a million times better than the NSMB's one. That's not something that's hard to accomplish, but....yeah.

It's not "downplaying" to point out the legitimate inferiority of SMW in comparison to SMB3 and YI.

(coughs)

See, I'm okay with that. People are allowed to be horribly wrong, so saying that 3 is better than World is fine. ;)

But calling World "middling" is beyond just being wrong. It's just sick.

Why care about the name, which is probably incomplete anyway. We are getting a new Mario people, that should be enough.

In all fairness, the "middling"-status of SMW is relative to the other Mario titles.

"Middling" Mario is still better than many/most other "high level" titles.

(SMW is inferior to SMB3 -- some neat ideas, but too many steps back. I really wish we had gotten the version of SMW with the Raccoon Tail and breakable blocks...)

Of course we're getting a new Mario -- I doubt this URL has anything to DO with that, given the original 2007 registration, but Mario will return!

It was probably discussed already but wasn't Super Mario World "Super Mario 4"?

If I'm not mistaken I think it was even subtitled as "Super Mario Bros. 4" in Japan.

But whatever... I'm looking forward to seeing what's coming.

EDIT: Ok... I see that it was discussed already.

That would be cool, I like the simple title naming scheme like Mario Kart 7. Whatever it is I just hope 2d mario 3ds ends up being more creative and visually interesting than NSMBDS.
