New Super Mario Bros 2 announced for 3DS - August 2012

That's way too harsh; NSMB games get far more flak than they deserve. These games unfortunately bear the burden of comparison to some of the greatest ever, so they fail to live up to extremely lofty expectations. In the realm of all 2D platformers, they are well above average.

i think they're average at best. the art is 90's shareware bad, music forgettable or annoying and the gameplay is more 3D mario in a 2D perspective than old mario. the clasic 2D games felt amazing which is why they still play well today, the new mario series plays like slop in comparison.

The NSMB games have fantastic music. I don't like how they reuse it for other games, but the music itself is classic Mario. It's better music than that of SMB3 at least.

I want this game, but i'll admit the rehashing is way too blatant that it reminds me of Call of Duty. I can deal with the style, but they definitely need to stop using the same exact terrains with slight modifications and design something at least some what different.

What? They been doing it for decades... why change? It just print money.

Hopefully its not based on Doki Doki Panic.
Honestly, a new Mario game that actually serves as a sequel to Doki Doki Panic would be really cool.

That's what I wish Super Mario 3D Land 2 would be. A game that brings back the look of Doki Doki Panic, along with classic enemies like Snifits, Ninjis, Birdo (as an enemy), and Phanto! Shy guys as well, of course. Super Mario Bros. 2 is written off as the red-headed stepchild of the series but it's actually a good game; I'd like to see its style incorporated into actual new Mario platformers. Super Mario 64 allowed you to play as different characters with different abilities, but that needs to come back as well. Playable Toad and Peach! Putting Shy Guys and Birdo into spinoff games doesn't count.

As for New Super Mario Bros. 2, I can't say I'm overly excited, but I'll likely get the game eventually just because I like Mario platformers. The inclusion of the Raccoon suit is nice.

I hope the character models are high quality at least. Its hard to tell with the current screenshots but if its as good as 3D Land I'll be happy.

I'm disappointed that the art style is still basically the same.
Excited that P wing and suits are here and that the game is coming
Hopeful that it won't control as horribly as NSMB Wii which basically ruined that entire game for me.

Really not excited by this news.

The new super mario bros games are so cynically made, they're such a pale imitation of the old 2d games. It's a series that wants to make the player recall a time when 2d mario games were actually brilliant through incessant fanwank in a not too subtle attempt to cover up the fact that the new series is a terribly mediocre platforming experience. The originality and charm of the older games is completely lost on whoever made these games, it's like the developers managed to take every surface level aspect of the original games and completely missed what made the games great in the first place. The art style is so generic and inoffensive that it somehow ends up being a total eyesore, and the music is some of the worst Nintendo has produced.

No they very well haven't. Every mainline 2D Mario platformer before NSMB came around had a very distinct style from the last, aside from 2J.

yeah, throwing vegetables, potions that turn into doorways, WART!... what happened to all these things?

I honestly see no reason why this game can't match the technical quality of the Wii version save of course screen resolution.

It's not spending polygon budget on environments, save a few 3D interactive objects, or a handful of 3D structures like pyramids in the desert stages.

Now imagine 3D land if it ONLY had to render characters and a couple of 3D objects on screen at any one time. 3DS hardware should be able to cruise on that.

Despite the complaints over art style, the NSMB series has always had great characters; the Wii version especially since they're all real time 3D (not just Mario and giant enemies). Very detailed, well animated, with personality.

NSMB DS isn't that great but I don't see the hate for NSMB Wii. That game has some of the best designed levels in the entire series.

You're right there's absolutely no reason why this game shouldn't look fantastic but we'll see.

I know it's superficial, but I'm honestly disappointed that it's not based off the excellent Super Mario Bros. 2. I'll still play it of course, but a part of me really wants to revisit the madness and whimsy of Subcon. Rocket ships hidden in plants, castles hidden at the bottom of deep waterfalls, Shyguys riding ostriches beneath flying carpets, floating faces chasing you through walls, and everything else!

super mario bros. 2 is woefully underappreciated.

The art may not be the most inspiring (of course I liked it and the music), but New Super Mario Bros Wii's level design is certainly among the best in the entire franchise.

Agreed fully. There's a lot of good shit in SMB2 and we've only seen a little bit of it incorporated into the Mario series since. A game that actually tries to be a direct sequel would be really refreshing among the NSMB series which is merely trying to recapture the magic of SMB/SMB3.

I thought GAF really liked NSMB Wii. I clearly remember debates about which game was better when SMG2 came out.

I think most people like NSMBWii but NSMB DS is not viewed too favorably. Lower tier mario for sure. Maybe better than Mario is Missing but hard to say.

Yeah SMB2 is incredible. The closest thing we came to a sequel is Super Mario Advance. Much of its art style informed its successors in a way.

It's the real Super Mario Bros. 2, not that shitty, Nintendo-produced ROM hack that came before it.

am i the only one that wanted a super mario world?
with secrets and levels and great art?

man, playing that gave me goosebumps....

that will be the next one... possibly the wii game but the only thing linking it to smw will be the cape, the rest of the game will still be based off the crappy nsb games.

it would be nice to see HD sprites but this is nintendo...

NSMB DS was fun, from what I remember, but it was definitely one of the weaker Mario games overall. I think it wasn't ambitious enough.

NSMB Wii was an improvement because of the better level design and inclusion of multiplayer. Hopefully NSMB2 is more like it than the original.

More than anything I hope multiplayer doesn't take a step back with this game. With each player having their own screen the raccoon tail shouldn't be an issue. I hope this is the first mario platformer with online play.

I feel like a broken record (and a sucker) here, having just said as much about flying Raccoon Mario, but should the Cape feather return in any Mario game, Nintendo can just go ahead and take my money straightaway. As much as they want; I won't mind.

Then I will simply pray that the level design will complement the power-up as required...

Totally agree. The Wii game was so stale and repetitive and the physics were sluggish. Not tight like the old games. The music was so lame too. It was like every level was a variation on that same track. Weren't that many secrets to find either, just those big gold coins. I remember SMW had a whole lot of secrets.

I can't blame Nintendo for not going out of their way to create something special. The games sell a metric ton, no need to put any effort. Just ship it as fast as possible and watch the money pile up.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise... But as much as I didn't mind the art in the previous two games, now it's getting a bit of a joke. Couldn't they at least experiment a wee bit with the graphics? They don't have to since it'll sell a squadillion copies, but...

Ah whatever, I'll still play it.

I'm sure it will play great, but man, I wish Nintendo would get a little more creative with the worlds in these games. I want so see them do something like Mario Land 2 or Super Mario World again. Where's the ambition?
