I don't know. I think RDJ let it slip they were filming something else too. I bet its some kinda tease for IM3.
Actually, I wonder if it's (Avengers spoilers!)
a Bruce Banner cameo in Iron Man 3. That's supposed to start filming soon anyways and we know Bruce drives off with Tony at the end of The Avengers. It was said Mark Ruffalo wouldn't be in Iron Man 3, but maybe they just did his part while he was available.
... just a theory. I don't think it has to do with The Avengers cause it doesn't make sense to only be a part of the US release.

I wish these movies were taken on to the next level. They do the action scenes and the CGI great, but I'd like to see some beautiful cinematographic moments naturally shot and more mature story lines that evoke emotion. They have so much material there to work with to achieve this

They need the type of transformation Nolan offered the Batman franchise, not in the sense of visual style but character narrative. They produced this with Captain America before the lab scene, they tried it with Thor but whilst a large theme in Avengers is heroes, I didn't identify any of them beside the Cap as heroes.

When I was a child, I idolised Superman not because of his powers but of how he used him. I never felt any empathy or connection with any of the 'heroes' in Avengers, beside one very poignant moment in the last act involving Iron Man. Those who have seen the movie know what scene I'm talking about. And that says it all, there aren't enough memorable emotive displays of heroism

You need to think in the way even though we are part of the audience (by we i mean not-THAT-young comic book fans), they are still aiming the movies for kids. Its a very hard balance to mantain in order to please everybody who might go see it. I think they give US the best they can.

That said, the only thing that worries me on Marvel moving forward (guess this belongs more on the MCU but still), is the room for interpretation on each of the movies directors. Considering all heroes are now bound to cross their path, there could be a potential staleness in different styles considering you kinda need to follow what Whedon did here a little bit.

Cap's helmet looks better here. Thanks to Photoshop, it seems to look more metallic instead of plastic.

Just got done watching Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captian America all for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of all three films. I wouldn't say any of them were great films, but all three were very entertaining and all had their own unique style that made each a joy to watch. The best part of each was the actual superheroes, which gets me extremely excited for The Avengers. I can't wait to see the interactions with each other!

It also should be interesting to see how my impressions are compared to my girlfriends. I've watched all the Marvel movies leading up to this one, while see hasn't seen any. But she is still extremely excited to see the Avengers next Saturday. I just hope I don't have to do a ton of explaining throughout the movie lol.

The movie is in the can and released. Little too late for reshoots. Now for adding one single scene at the end, that is an easier explanation.

Watch, it is just an elaborate trick to make us all think they are doing more.

My money's on a promo for something. It would be silly for them to attach something only to the theatrical run in the US but not worldwide.

Saw it, loved it. Huge entertainment value and I'm so so pleased to finally see Hulk portrayed well on film. After that awful, awful final fight in " The Incredible Hulk", it's good to see Hulk being the supreme badass he is supposed to be.

Regarding the Hulk
the way he turns from rage-monster in his first transformation, to an Avenger being able to follow orders in the final battle; I've seen a few posters being irked by this behavioral difference being unexplained, but I feel that its because the first time Banner hulked out against his will, while during the climax he chose to transform himself, thus retaining some form of control over the Hulk. Don't know if anyone would agree.

Oh and for anyone not having seen it, I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but don't get up and leave as soon as the credits roll.

MASSIVE POST-CREDIT SPOILER
Goddamn, they're really bringing in Thanos. Quite the surprise, and I'm happy they're willing to go all out in the Marvel lore (as far as the IP allows Marvel Studios anyway). Very hyped to see how they're going to bring Thanos in the mix, if he's going to be like this master behind the curtain for the upcoming Marvel sequels.

So will the individual character movies follow the continuity from this movie? Pretty interesting to have so many different plot lines that need to take place after this, and all make sense.

Is
Thanos the last villain for the Avengers ?

Sorry, not really a comic fan.
Last isn't really a good term, especially in terms of comics where there's always something new, someone returning, etc. Thanos is one of the most powerful enemies in the entire Marvel Universe. The scale of his powers and story arc is quite larger than anything seen in the Marvel movie universe thus far. Wiki him and read up a bit if your curious.

Honestly i think its pretty easy to figure out the "bonus" scenes or plot elements of the next individual movies after
the Thanos reveal
. It could all flow pretty good.

In comparing The Avengers opening weekend by country with The Dark Knight, The Avengers does better everywhere except in Germany. I don't know if Germans are Batman-crazy, or if they just don't care for the Marvel characters. Iron Man 2 opened in Germany with less than 1/3 of the opening weekend of The Dark Knight.

On the other hand, after one weekend, The Avengers has already doubled TDK's total gross in the Philippines! I thought maybe there was something crazy going on with currency fluctuation, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Edit: I just thought to look at Spider-Man 3's foreign totals, and it seems like these characters just aren't very popular in Germany.

BOM pointed this out;
BoxOfficeMojo said:
Oddly, it only opened to $6.7 million in Germany, though looking at past Avengers movie grosses it doesn't appear the Germans are as fond of the team as the rest of the world.
Germany is to Avengers what Japan was to TDK.

I will be pretty pissed if I discover that the new scene is not in the international copies of the movie ... =|

below link has possible spoilers for Avengers 1 if you are an old school fan :

Maybe Avengers 2 will be an adaptation of this arc ?

It was in the trailer. At least what he said. But that scene made the whole cinema laugh. :D

It was good that Hulk had his funny moments, too and not only destruction or sadness like in his movies before.

It was in the last trailer? I must have missed it. And we've looped that trailer in the in-house theater every Friday for weeks.

Nordling's review on AICN is up, and he has the best description of why adapting Hulk into his own movie is so difficult:

Nordling said:
The Hulk seems easy on paper, but when it comes to the movies he’s been extraordinarily difficult to adapt successfully. It’s probably because while the Hulk in full-on rage can be very cinematic, Bruce Banner’s conflicts are all internal. It’s a mix that’s almost impossible to get right – imagine a sensitive indie movie about a man with deep psychological scars that suddenly turns into a Michael Bay movie in the last third. It’s a dichotomy that isn’t easy to portray onscreen, as fans of even Ang Lee’s HULK can attest.

Elaborate for the less comically knowledgeable?

well basically
Thanos uses the Infinity Gauntlet
wich ties with every Avenger included in this film in one way or another. I imagine the bonus scenes to feature it and
Thanos trying to retrieve it.

You think they'd subjugate something like that to a post credits scene in each movie? I don't think so, I'd think they'd rather handle that within each movie. Seems to big of a plot point to throw at the end of individual movies.

Id figure they'll hint at it, with SHIELD starting to find out and whatnot, and finish it off with the start of the second Avengers movie.

The
Infinity Gems with wich Thanos forms the Gaunglet
might very well start to appear in the individual movies one way or another.

There was even a
prop shown by Marvel at Comic-Con 2010 suggesting they would be implemented in some way

SPOILER (i guess) ---> http://i.imgur.com/y0VLU.jpg

edit: oh now i understand that you meant that as this whole thing starting to appear as plot points on the individual movies. I meant that as well. Specially the
Infinity Gems

although they could use an
infinity gauntlet-less Thanos i guess
, and build all of this for the third one..

From that same review on AICN:

I’m certain that some 10-year-old child, boy or girl, is going to see this and say, “I want to do that,” and make something amazing in 20 years.  Like STAR WARS, or LORD OF THE RINGS, THE AVENGERS has a transporting power that, like those great epic movies of old, takes the audience to a different world, a world in which a rich man can invent a mechanical suit of armor, or that magical gods exist, or that rage can make a modest man into a beast, or that heroes from yesteryear can return and save us all.  There are moments where I wasn’t just recalling my childhood, sitting in the darkened church and reveling in those movies; no, I was that gleeful 10-year-old boy again, cheering my heroes, booing the villains, and being shown such images of wonder and majesty that I was utterly transported.  This is nostalgia of the now.

Friday is so far away.

I remember them showing that off and then I got hype thinking they'd introduce
Thanos___________
at the end of Thor but they didn't. Major blue balls. Now I understand. The idea of
them using the second movie to flesh out the gems/each gem to build up to the third is an interesting idea though. Only wish they also had the X-Men licenses to help flesh that out further. Who has the Fantastic Four license?

I'd argue they probably didnt even know back then. I thought the same as you and i'd guess they thought about doing that as well

Sounds like one of the rare comic book movies that remembers that it's a comic book movie. This is why I felt spiderman 2 was so good. Xmen somehow never achieved this (though 2 was damn good). I often find myself wanting batman to return to this.

Nordling's review on AICN is up, and he has the best description of why adapting Hulk into his own movie is so difficult:

I actually thought that Whedon himself explained this best in the latest issue of Time Magazine. I'll transcribe it here myself:

Whedon said:
"The Hulk is a very hard character to make a movie about because he's not a superhero. He's a werewolf." In a way, the Hulk is a microcosm of the Avengers--a man divided against himself.

So Whedon and Ruffalo, who plays the Hulk, went back to the last time the character really worked onscreen, which was in the 1970s TV series also called The Incredible Hulk. "We wanted to go with a Bruce Banner who isn't self-obsessed," Whedon says. "When Bruce Banner spends all his time trying to cure himself, he becomes that whiny guy that's getting in the way of your Hulk movie." So instead Ruffalo plays him like a recovering addict who's trying to get on with his life; meanwhile his teammates need the Hulk's strength and Banner's scientific expertise, but they're terrified of his anger. "Is he a superhero or a monster?" Whedon says. "He's both."

But she is still extremely excited to see the Avengers next Saturday. I just hope I don't have to do a ton of explaining throughout the movie lol.

I think she'll be able to enjoy the films without seeing the prior films. The film has a fair bit of dialogue that explains the characters origins and motivations which really sound like they're written for the audience unfamiliar with the characters.
