I felt that the Norn starting area was better than the Human one.

it definitely was, it just seemed more action packed. i was always running around from event to event. and the shaman thing in the ice field was a lot more fun than the shadow in the swamp.

Couldn't figure out crafting. Maybe I started too late with it, because the materials I had gave too high a difficulty, so I had no chance to skill up and make anything.

Well you kind of got boned by losing access to trading post. Being able to buy mats and sell stuff you're only crafting for XP helps out a lot. You really can't keep up with craft level requirements if you're not overproducing to sell.

I find the human opening to be worse than the other 2.

Also you can easily start crafting later on. As long as you salvage everything on your path and keep the materials. Discoveries are easy once you figure it out.

Hoping preformance will make a leap for the next event. WvWvW when assaulting the castle lord was just a slideshow for me. Arcane powered meteor shower while having the might boon and the available 10 fire trait points this weekend, has got to be the most amazing thing in WvWvW. Dat crit shower.

I expected dragons, I got this.

I hope they don't fix this "glitch".

See the norn starting area really didnt click with me (got to lvl 8). I really like the layout of the human city more than the other races' starting city. Things are just much easier get to (bank, auction, crafting, etc.).

I didn't get to play a whole lot this BWE due to work/school but I was able to play for a few hours, gave me a taste of what's to come. So far, positive experience overall. Had trouble trying to get my 2 friends and I all into the regular server to do quests, glad to hear they're going to fix partying in overflow servers. Didn't really like that guilds were capped at 100, Grizz told me that should be changed so thats good. Overall I played like maybe 8 hours? Played a human necro to 11, char ele to 7 and norn guardian to 8. Necro pets are really weak like others have said but their staff/marks are pretty sweet. Elementalist and guardian were fun but I think I'll stick with necro for now as my main. Hope to try more classes next time.

Loved that you can access the auctions from anywhere, surprised this feature isn't in more mmos. I love crafting so the idea of a different storage for mats is a godsend. One thing I wish they'd steal from SWTOR is the ability to craft while your materials are in your bank. Dye system is pretty sweet, being able to change your colors on the fly is awesome.

I had a question about gear however, is it possible to preview what things looked like before buying? I'd want to see what armor would look like before accepting a reward/buying from the auction. Also is there a way to trade with other players? Or is it solely through the mail system? If it is only through the mail, is there a COD option?

Sorry for all the questions, really wished I had more time with the beta...

I'm quite sure there was no way to preview armor from rewards, trading post, crafting window, etc. Tried almost everything and no luck. I saw no trade option on players, so I guess that's not in? Didn't play much with the mail either.

Maybe someone else checked out these stuff. They honestly aren't features that I'd look into, because I sort of expect them to already be there. :P

So from my experience melee is basically useless in WvW when confronted in groups. When playing as a thief in WvW i basically used dual pistols and short bow for my weapon groups. Getting in their melee range meant you were too far in and about to get nuked. Overall i think ranged has an advantage in game, despite being able to melee/ranged if you wanted to, but youre gimping yourself at least in WvW for sure 80% of the time.

There's no player to player trading that opens a window as this is an intentional design decision to kill gold farming. You simply click your mail UI and can send for free instantly to anyone playing the game regardless of server. Also, not having a zone wide chat channel kills the entire SPAM LOLOLOL TRADE CHAT that other MMOs have, puts focus on individual areas of socialization due to a limited /local chat range, puts a focus on the global Trading Post which allows you to sell your stuff FAR faster than any trade spam system would as well.

In regards to city layout, it's largely irrelevant once you've explored once because you just port around since it's free in town. I regularly just hopped back and forth from bank to crafting to whatever with waypoints.

Yeah, every city has the bank/trading post and crafting areas very close to each other and close to a waypoint.

Ah, didn't think of that. Yea waypointing around would make things a easier. Anyone else think the Char's Black Citadel look a bit like the death star (during the loading screens?)

Is it just me, or are normal screens missing effects while high res actually captures what you see?

Haha, sums up my beta weekend pretty well with my Guardian, either dead or raising the dead ;) ...

Seriously though, even though I did die a lot, overall it was tons of fun and looking forward to the next beta weekend...

That's true in just about any group PvP game I've found. Melee have it rougher in group combat. I think all classes get both melee and ranged weapons, right? I know my warrior does. I was able to use my gun and switch to my hammer/greatsword when necessary.

Melee will be very strong when WvW gets more organized.

When you can actually coordinate 30 melee classes to charge at the same time, it won't seem so underpowered.

so 2 races are still locked for testing and people think its coming out in june. i think people need to stop with with there arses

When you have an elementalist and a guardian chill and completely wall 30 charging melee, it'll be funny as all hell.

How to play Mesmer or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the Illusion

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0nKx_Ukpec&feature=g-u-u

Looking good! S+S is really the best combo for melee it seems. And using greatsword for pull was a good thing as well.

Do you know or remember if those sword clones or phantasms also cause vulnerability on the target?

I noticed you had signet of Illusions but didn't use it to recharge your shatters, that would give a bit more burst as well :p

Really can't wait to play a Mesmer in release! I thought I'd roll a Thief but the Mesmer totally grabbed me during this BWE.

Hopefully they'll be able to react in time, because you better believe those 30 melee will have gap closers. And with a game without collision detection, those melees will already be inside causing chaos.

Wow what an awesome weekend.... I had a blast playing my elementalist. This will deff be my MMO for the next few years, I cant wait til launch :-D
GW2 and diablo 3 will be the end of me

Damn, this is what I'm worried about the most. I didn't have a chance to try out any WvW/PvP but this is going to be the deciding factor. I want a class that isn't going to feel gimped a majority of the time in PVP. Especially if it's just big face-offs from structures and such.

Got a chance to pilot a siege golem briefly yesterday. Sending a group of enemy players fleeing over the castle walls as we took their keep, was probably one of the more fun things i've done in an mmo.

Nothing inspires fear like a bigass robot.

The more players involved, the more melee classe become gimped since they are dealing with larger volumes of fire and they always get picked off first as the easy target. WAR was the same way when you had several hundred players going at it, it basically was just a gigantic shooting match.

In real battle, melee only worked because of large massive coordinated charges. To do that in a video game.... not so easy.

Eh, the only class that gets gimped in large clashes is an 'offensive' guardian. Everyone else has effective ranged options.

After this BWE I'm 100% sold on the Elementalist (with the Staff, that is) and will be making that my main once the game releases. The Staff skills are simply too awesome for PvE, PvP and WvW. It also feels super rewarding when you combine all the attunements to pull off crushing combos. Plus it's so easy to disengage enemies, even persistent thieves :3

On the other hand, the Ele's Dagger skills are deeply disappointing. Scepter is better, but leagues under the Staff. Good thing each weapon comes with 4 skill bars!

My only regret is that I don't fancy the way cloth armors tend to look and will never wear this :(

This isn't me playing, it's a video a friend of mine made.
He doesn't have a GAF account so he asked me to tell you this:

tell that dude on teh gaf that i save signet of illusion for shit hits fan moments where i use double invulnerability shatters, or more than one shatter type recharge
in general combat its not worthwhile because of cast time

Yeah, I have a feeling there won't be "large massive coordinated charges" as often as I'd like, especially all the times I might want to just jump on and join WvW for a bit then logoff.

Ranged it is I guess .. sad too, I was hoping the melee ranged options weren't going to just be "you can do this while you wait until you can melee" ... I was hoping it would be effective.

Ah well, probably roll an Elementalist.

Eh, the only class that gets gimped in large clashes is an 'offensive' guardian. Everyone else has effective ranged options.

Which is why melee becomes useless in WvW. The nature of it discourages melee play, and everyone having effective ranged options just makes melee less useful in the large battles.

It works fine in smaller pvp play, but in large scale battles melee is always gimped. Just forces melee users to also join the range game.

Most of my success in WvW came from using ranged weaponry. Short of giving melee-fitted toons a faster movement speed, I don't see much to get around it in a general sense. Yes, it's possible to zerg a melee horde and do damage, but that shouldn't be the only way in which melee proves significant within PvP combat.

Will say this much though: It took a helluva lot to bring down my greathammer-wielding guardian. That said, I never blatantly charged into a large, ranged enemy force without having a lot of support (ie. ranged folks) giving them hell at the same time. Once I got in close range, though? Proved very effective for dispersing them.

The problem is getting in close.

They are. I don't recommend getting into a 1v1 ranged fight with one of the caster classes, but you can certainly cause some damage and help back up an enemy force if you administer your strikes tactically.

Guardians or Warriors need a mobile shield ability so they can charge in a line and protect those behind while they charge at ranged units.

Unless it's ungodly overpowered, it's not going to do much use in WvW situations. Getting players to form up a shield wall and move in a coordinated matter is going to be incredibly difficult to happen, especially with random players. Melee users if they don't charge in mass get picked off by the larger amount of range users who will concentrate firepower on them. Siege warfare historically has always favored range and it always took mass coordinated close combat support to make any breakthroughs. Any protection ability would need to be greatly scaled back somehow when used outside of WvW because in smaller pvp matches and pve it would be broken.

In a video game like this, it's going to be very very difficult to get enough melee users to make such attacks. Defendible postions and everyone having range utility really discourages it.

The larger the battles, the more melee users will be put at a disadvantage.

I think if they were to increase the running speed of melee units, specifically the Warrior and Guardian, they would be a lot more effective. It would be harder to determine AoE targeting while also allowing them to get close and break up condensed enemy forces. Obviously it would take some tweaking across the board, but I imagine that would help.

Now that the beta is over this seems like a great time to ask:

How do I enter WvWvW?

Went to the Mists pvp area, walked around into a portal eventually that led me to a room with 3 portals (green, red, blue). Walked into the red portal. Was met with an enormous map full of PvE enemies stationed at fortresses and no other players on my side. Got confused and stayed away from there, sticking only to match-making pvp. Was that WvWvW?

Also, when your team loses in pvp, is it just me or do you get stuck with the same team the following round?

On the Hero panel in the bottom right there is one section where you can what it looks like weapon sets ( they are blue ) but you can't actually use the weapons that you slot in there. What is this? I couldn't find an explination on the internetz.

They would get in close quicker, but it's not going to stop them from being picked off by mass fire. Melee users always get singled out in large scale game pvp since they usually are by themselves and everyone concentrated on them while the rest of his team is sitting back at range. And on defense the melee users are going to have to deal with a combination of range and melee users on defense as well for a double whammy. In more head on conflict in the middle of a battlefield it would perhaps would out better

The underwater weapons?

I don't think speed the issue. Guardians (no idea about Warriors) have a bunch of mobility abilities (Swiftness, Stability, Teleport, some weapons have a jump/teleport, even an elite that makes them damage immune) to quickly close the gap. The problem is what happens once you've gotten there. Ranged is still just as effective up close as it is from a distance and the other side is pretty likely to have a bunch of melee dudes who are now pounding on you.

The only time I saw melee work out well in WvW is when meeting out in the open (which is not a good idea in the first place) or outnumbered us.

So basically if I plan to WvWvW with a majority of my time I should stick to a ranged class? I love melee but I don't want to gimp myself to what is basically seen as an unavoidable situation in almost any game unfortunately. Maybe I'll play melee for the stories and alts and such but my main character will probably be ranged.

It would be more of a situation of what you want to do.

Now really they are not "useless", but you will not be as effective and will need to be more defensive player. Melee is very much needed often to break through against an enemy position, but this means most will assume a ranged position till the time is right to attack, or you can coordinate a zerg with other melee users which can prove highly disruptive.

It's basically harder to play melee simply, not really that they are not useful, as they are. And when playing on the defensive side of a battle, melee users are vital protection against other melee

Haha, yes it was, you walked into the homelands of an enemy server (we were the green team in this beta).
