The Avengers 3.5/5 Stars

Its entertaining but obviously its mostly a CG porn movie with a ok plot that works well to drive the pretty action. The actors all do their work as expected pretty decent. Some bloopers from CG team and the stunt double areas where is obvious but otherwise pretty fun movie but nothing extraordinary overall.

Obviously this is my opinion so don't taze/burn me bros.

i guess i mean - they really felt the story wasn't important

They've spent 4 years and 5 individual movies building up the story for this film, they didn't really need to go any further with it. It was perfectly serviceable for a Marvel Comics-style super team-up crossover beat-everything-up event.

If they had made the movie more needlessly complicated and developed more story, they wouldn't have had the screen time to devote to each and every hero. The fact that they were able to do that and give Black Widow and Hawkeye a fair share was a huge highlight of the movie for me.

And yeah the whole "looks like TV filming" thing never once occurred to me during the film. It actually had some really surprising and great shots.

Eh, that's okay. I mean, I love this movie to bits, but it's obviously not Citizen Kane. It is simply the best film adaptation of a funny book (ever).

There's nothing at all wrong with having your opinion of the movie of course, I'm just wondering what you're referring to here. Certainly wasn't obvious to me :-x

That part with Cap jumping to check the controls of the turbines and Hawkeye shooting his bow while dropping from the top of a building looked pretty damn fake.
Other than that, I have no complains. I mean, you can tell that a large ass chunk of the movie is pure CG, but HOW COULD IT NOT BE.

Heh, I loved both those shots. Maybe the 3D masked some of the cruddy CG, but I didn't see anything that looked really bad to me.
Some of my favourite effects were the hellicarrier, Hulk and Iron Man (obviously) and the shot of Hawkeye standing inside the quinjet outside the hellicarrier.
The CGIreally impressed me throughout, solid effects all around.

(Props to you and yours, Nia)

This is the most fun I have ever had at a movie. It replaces Star Wars from my childhood and Fellowship of the Ring from my adulthood. My face hurt from smiling for 2.5 hours straight. It was the perfect storm of movie magic, nostalgia, hype, and pay off.

Avengers delivered far beyond my wildest fan boy expectations. This movie deserves everything that it has coming and more. 10/10, 5 stars, holy shit

Going to see it this morning and I'm already bummed. Apparently 2D showings aren't expensive enough to bother putting it on the large screen. But I'm not paying a premium to watch some lame 3D conversion.

Yeah, I can't wait for the weekend numbers, I'm really hopeful. I think this movie truly deserves massive success for the risk that Marvel has taken over the last few years, building up this catalogue of films all leading up to this one project. If this movie failed it would have all been for naught. And for the work of everyone involved.

Also the fact that it's fucking amazing and SO MUCH FUN.

If it exceeds expectations and goes far, it will hopefully translate into more and more movie projects from Marvel to expand this universe. They've done such a great job.

As for the double part Black Widow first scene when fighting tied to the chair you can easily see a different body build exactly on the roll and the jump kick where she basically falls to the ground and gets back up.

I just woke up so I might need some time to remember other Stunt double stuff

Couldn't do the midnight screening because I'd be useless at work today. But damn, my hype is through the roof.

But tell me, when is the after credits scene? Mid-credits? End-credits?

I am fucking hyped to see this today. Just rewatched the first Iron Man so fucking good especially that ending credit scene with Fury. I remember thinking it was gonna take forever for The Avengers to come out now here it is.

Both. There is a mid credits scene and an end credits scene. Stay for both

I felt like Hawkeye was the weird one out. I felt he did not belong.... at all.

Because this movie is so amazing, you get both! Big "teaser reveal" mid credits and a good bonus scene after credits.

lulz at Ebert's review

"Comic-Con nerds will have multiple orgasms," predicts critic David Edelstein in New York magazine, confirming something I had vaguely suspected about them. If he is correct, it's time for desperately needed movies to re-educate nerds in the joys of sex. "The Avengers" is done well by Joss Whedon, with style and energy. It provides its fans with exactly what they desire. Whether it is exactly what they deserve is arguable.

He gave it 3 stars out of 4.

Fuck that. This is the superhero movie we deserve. And the one we needed RIGHT NOW.

I think I need it right now so hard I'm gonna stop at the theatre on the way home from work today....

People were talking about their favourite lines earlier and I think mine is...
"You people are so petty! And tiny!" That line had be laughing so hard and the camera angle on Thor while he said it just added to the hilarious.

Storm one one line impressions:

Highly satisfying despite my earlier doubts

Lack annoying Whedonisms for the most part

Favorite scene by a mile is the "dissent" scene

Chris Evans is not in the same league as RDJ or Ruffalo or Hiddleston

Black Widow scenes were the biggest pleasant surprise

End battle went on too long and a little too destructive

Loki + aliens seems random

CGI bugged me but it always does

I went to a local midnight showing and thought the experience was a letdown, but I would probably have enjoyed myself more if I had gone to a Friday matinee.

There were comic book nerds that clapped and cheered after two particular, hyped lines and clapped through other characters' lines (
He's adopted.
). I should have taken the stairs instead of the escalator when I left the theater because I got stuck behind some people who smelled like a mid-August anime convention.

The movie itself was competent- there were no lines or scenes that made me cringe. The whole thing was predictable after the first act and the best parts of the movie were the in-your-gut sound effects and Ruffalo's Banner. I think he did a great job portraying an introverted scientist.

StEnd battle went on too long and a little too destructive

Good impressions but this made me chuckle a bit.

It was almost too good! If Hulk is involved, there can always be MORE destruction! :D

The
Hulk punching Thor
gag reminded me of the style of Hulk comedy in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. It's pitch-perfect and exactly how he should be portrayed on this team.
I only wish maybe before he did it, Thor tried to pat him on the back or shake his hand or something for a job well done.
They absolutely nailed Hulk in this movie, from the CG that's just as joyous to look at as Iron Man to his demeanor and animation. Ruffallo is an amazing Banner, by far the best yet and I'm glad he's sticking around. And the SMASHING!

It was the building coming down, actually. Whenever comics/movies try to amp up to that level of destruction, it takes me back to 9/11 and the impact it had, and makes the movie seem cartoony in comparison.

I guess I hafta go see this now. I've never been a fan of the Avengers comics and preferred X-Men, but this definately sounds like a must see.

Marvel really has a handle on these comic book movies now. Great action packed fun guaranteed to be blockbuster money makers.

Ah, I hear ya. Suspension of disbelief and all that...
honestly I'm glad they didn't hold back on that. They really drove home how much of a destructive force Loki unleashed on the world, without really understanding what he was dealing with.

Agreed on that. Scarlett finally got a feel for the role or took to Whedon's direction better or something. Did not expect to give a crap about her.

I think we can just chalk it up to Iron Man 2 having shitty direction and writing for her.
I honestly didn't expect much background on her shadowy past in Russia. In Iron Man 2 it didn't even seem like they cared that she was previously a Russian assassin, it was like they were changing so much about her character. It was good to see so early in the movie that they acknowledged her character, actually used her full name and spilled the beans on her background. The character needed it to be a convincing part of this movie and Scarlett nailed it. And looked absolutely fucking gorgeous the entire time. The scene with her and Banner/Hulk was one of my favourites. Great acting and great visuals. :)

The fact that they put so much effort in to her character and background has me hoping (potential future movie spoiler)
she'll show up in Captain America 2 as part of Winter Soldier's story...if they use him for the sequel which I hope they do.

Painful, but this is just making me think about how excellent and deeply fun a Whedon-directed X-Men movie in the same universe would be. :( He wrote the comic storyline that X3's cure subplot was based on, he loves the characters.
Can't say I disagree, but I don't really care for Ultimates Hawkeye either. One of my least favorite of the Ultimates in fact.
Well, fair enough, I'm just saying he did echo a comics Hawkeye. :P
