Slightly off topic, but did anyone else's theater get absolutely silent when the TDKR trailer came on? I swear I think that's the quietest I've ever heard a movie theater.

Well, I liked Loki in Thor for not betraying Asgard and actually trying to kill the frost giants, but let's not forget he totally manipulated and lied to Thor by telling him Odin was dead, and then after that he sent the treasure room robot guard to kill off Thor.

He lied to Thor so Thor wouldn't come home and overshadow him again. He was happy to leave the mortal Thor to live out his days on Earth.

Loki only sent The Destroyer out of desperation when Thor's friends went to bring him back.

THE DESTROYER.

Midnight estimates are in; 20M. For reference SM3 had a midnight of 10M for a weekend of 151M and Ironman 2 had a midnight of 7.5M for 128M weekend.

So this number is great.

I was wondering how it would work if you opened a wormhole in the atmosphere with the other end being in space. My knowledge of this would suggest that things should be getting pulled from the atmosphere into the vacuum

It's Hunger Games ballpark, I imagine the weekend will be similar as well, so nothing really too insane.

Not comparable, neither had the 3D tax.

$20m is actually pretty low if you factor in the 3d tax, what would it have been without it?

My theater didn't get DKR, ASM, or even Prometheus trailer. All I got was Brave, some movie about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny teaming up, and some crazy ass movie with a real life Teddy Bear.

Hunger Games had 30% higher presales, this is trending just like the other two superhero movies I mentioned, more walk up business.

So? Dont you think the same advantage (boost) will apply to the weekend or do you think that wont happen?

Again, 3d boost is irrelevant, when comparing the numbers. HINT: Avengers 3d boost wont be limited to midnights.

Both excited and annoyed at all of the talk about the final battle. Feel like I'm just going to be waiting for that to happen. Reminds me of LOTR: The two towers where the movie was mostly boring up until the Helms Deep battle.

Is that the case here or is everything leading up to it pretty great as well?

It's great leading up to it. In fact, I think it's *better* before the final battle (which is OK, but the lead up is excellent).

Comparing midnight takings/estimates to movies that didn't have the 3d is pointless is all I'm saying. I expect a good opening weekend, but stop the pointless comparisons. if you must, compare it to another hyped movie whose opening midnight was almost entirely 3d.

I got around to seeing it last night. Here's a few of my thoughts:
  • Whedon did it. These characters shouldn't have worked as well as they did.
  • Major plus on mixing humor, action, and drama.
  • I felt this suffered from the same problems as Iron Man. Which isn't a bad thing by any means. The ending just falls flat for me.
  • The whole germany scene into the forest scene was awesome.
  • RDJ and Ruffalo work very well with each other. I'd like to see banner pop up working for Stark in the next Iron Man movie.
  • Lost it at the Hulk pummeling Loki in Stark Tower. I'm glad Whedon gave us scenes like this.

Gee, boxofficemojo and the rest were all comparing Avenger's tracking to SM3.

THEY MUST BE POINTLESS!!!1

*facepalm*

Trying to decide on whether or not I should get a chicken shawarma for lunch (brought lunch from home) or have it for dinner. I had a bad craving for one last night after the movie... :D

Ready to to watch this movie tonight
I am gonna rock my new official avengers t-shirt limited edition.

Worth nothing: The Dark Knight had midnight returns of $18M. The Dark Knight also came out in July when students were on summer vacation.

Superhero films aren't as midnight front-loaded as the Harry Potters, Twilights or even Hunger Games.

If Avengers can hit 70-75M on Friday (midnights included), it will take the weekend record. It's Saturday and Sunday grosses are going to outclass HP7.5

Midnight numbers were never going to be as great as HP7.5 or HG. School is in session/finals week and people have work. My friends and I are seeing it tonight because everyone has work. Another thing that contributes to HP7.5 was that real Imax theater were showing it. The real Imax around here and a lot of other places are showing Wrath of the Titans, which is just really stupid.

This is basically a Donor Kebab, right?

That shit is rank. Absolutely disgusting. Ugh.

Shwarma can be customized to basically fit whatever tastes you want. It's like calling pizza or burgers rank. Some might be, but if so, get one that fits your style. I don't like garlic sauce, so I tell them to skip that on my shwarmas and add hummus instead. Chicken Shwarmas are delicious.

People weren't working/school was out when HG hit?

Genuine question.

But it's basically a Donor (what it's called in the UK). If it is, it's absolutely rank. I'm sure some might like it, but it's goddamn wretched in my opinion.

Dude I already saw it, I just like to see people as happy with it as I was, haha

Heh.

Indeed they are-there is a place in San Francisco called Oasis Grill near my office that makes the best chicken shwarma. It is the food of the Gods.

Well doner kebab is Turkish and in my opinion inferior usually, but similar. If you're just speaking generally though hooo boy unbelievably wrong; would you consider it at all possible you just haven't had any good shawarma?

The Hulk smashing Loki Scene shows Hulk needs a movie where he really needs non-human enemies unlike the past 2 movies where human counterparts (even if they were juiced up) were against him. Also less focus on love interest and more on utter chaos

I'm going to see it tomorrow morning. Been looking forward to this for a long time, though somehow it's only my 4th most anticipated movie this year behind Brave, TDKR, and The Hobbit. What a great year for movies.

But you havent come forth with a reason as to why this tax will not boost the weekend numbers.

Ah, I'm not the one calling this number "pretty low".

I never claimed it wouldn't. I said comparisons are pointless as they don't take the 3d tax into account.

And yes, it is pretty low in line with the inflated tracking. I was expecting in the region of $25 - $30m opening night for it to hit $175m opening weekend.

My city has a large Lebanese population, so our shwarmas are cooked to their style. I haven't tried every ethnic variation, but I find Lebanese cuisine to be the best Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine.

Did I hear some stuff about a Prometheus trailer? Is it that latest trailer full with spoilers? Should I close my eyes and ears when it comes?
It probably depends on where you see Avengers since some people are saying that they didn't see that trailer, but the one I saw was a really extended trailer. It did a good job making the case for seeing the movie in 3D, though.

FWIW, these are the trailers I remember seeing:
End of Watch (looked okay, got a WTF reaction from most of the audience)
The Dictator (looked stupid, got a good reaction from the audience- so I knew I would hate most of this audience at this point)
The Expendables 2 (looked stupid, got a good reaction from the audience)
Frankenweiner (looks stupid, but 3D effect is good. Got a meh reaction)
Prometheus (3D looks amazing, got good reactions. Some laughter- I'm sorry to say that I found parts of it funny for reasons I don't quite understand)
Amazing Spider Man (3D looks good, good audience reaction)
Dark Knight Rises (great audience reaction, looks good)
