I think Avengers will also benefit more from repeat viewings than TDKR. Everyone will rush out to see TDKR (so much so that even if Avengers does break the opening record I can see TDKR breaking it again 2 months later), but its the end of the series and looks sombre as fuck. Not sure if thats something people will want to see again and again. Conversely, I can see people going to Avengers multiple times.

On the other hand though, TDKR has MUCH less competition after its release than Avengers does.

So who knows?

What competition does Avengers have

Dark Shadows ... Dictator ..... Battleship.... MIB 3

What competition does TDKR have

Total Recall ... Bourne Legacy....

Lol

Meh, I think you guys appreciate the movie a LOT more than a 10 year old will simply because you presumably lived a lifetime of wanting it.

Yeah, I agree. Avengers would be cool for kids, but the ones who REALLY appreciate it are the adults who grew up on the comics to begin with. On the other hand, I think original properties which really get done well are a real magical experience for kids.

Lol

Take a look at the calender before making such silly posts. And even ignoring the two weeks the box office spreads its legs to TDKR, Avengers still has a lot tougher competition.

TDKR has ice age 4 which is a 1B$ movie on its own.

+ the Olympics.

Hard to say. I do know this, that Target commercial nailed it, there are going to legions of kids playing Avengers this summer, and that's very, very cool.

Didn't know where else to put this.

I am very happy that this movie turned out to be such a huge hit. The many years of build up to this moment actually paid off.

TDK got a boost because of Ledger's death and performance. TDKR isn't going to have that extra hype going for it.

I still think Batman will probably outgross Avengers WW when all is said and done.

I am surprised to see that you haven't been trampled by blind angry masses yet.
It's a hard truth, but it is a truth nonetheless.

This movie being about a team means it's going to sell a ton of toys and costumes.
When kids are playing, they have so many characters they could be. Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Cap, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Maria Hill, Fury, Coulson.

With TDKR, you can be Batman, Gordon, or Catwoman?

A big wow at those numbers! Couldn't have happened to a more deserving event film.

As for the box office competition, TDKR is going to live or die on its final marketing push. Avengers opening day just topped Avatar's opening weekend. Yah, I know that doesn't mean much; still, I can't wait to see what the word of mouth and repeat viewing does for the worldwide total.

It's not the whole truth. It's a single contributing factor. WB won't be oblivious to that in their equations, but they won't be overselling it either.

This movie was such a great surprise, better than any movie I saw in theater's last year. Going to see it again tonight and I'm even more excited for Avengers 2. (whenever that comes out)

I don't think it's just his death (that was a pretty big factor though), but also that he did a very radical and believable version of a very iconic character. Joker is THE Batman villain.

My two favorite Cap moments were
the cops saying "Why should we listen to you?" and Cap showing them why, and using the shield to blow him out of the building.
My favorite was just the small touch where he
bats that grenade away on the ship in midair. Small detail but so awesome.

yeah, you european? they love this shit. my whole company was pumped for 3 and we all are 20-40.

Nope, I'm Canadian. Here, those movies are fodder for kids 5-10, but not much more. Pixar seems to be the only movies here that gain a broader audience.

Midnights never tell the story for films like this. Younger audiences will flock to films like Twilight, Hunger Games, and Harry Potter at midnight and turn out huge numbers. Spider-Man 3 did $10 million at midnight and had a $151 million OW.

One big problem with TDKR is that Bane is trying to cause chaos in Arkham just like The Joker did, but Bane is a far less compelling villain. He doesn't look as scary, his lines aren't as memorable and you don't really see his face.

One thing that is an ABSOLUTE certainty, between both kids and adults alike: Halloween 2012 is going to be completely and utterly dominated by Avengers costumes and Bane/Catwoman costumes.

Also,
Thor "bringing the hammer down".
That got a huge reaction from the audience.

There were a ton of great Cap moments in this. One of my buddies is a big Cap fan, and he was very pleased.

From watching the trailers I agree completely.

I don't think it matters which character is your favorite; Avengers did right by all of them. Although Hulk was on some next level shit.

Looking at past beginning of May superhero film performances (Spider-man 1 and 3, Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor), and doing the Math using the Avengers midnight and first day numbers, I think $180M for the weekend is the low end estimate.

Friday - $80.5M ($62M without midnights)
Saturday - $62M
Sunday - $40M (conservative 35% drop from Saturday)

That gives you a total of $182.5M

That said, it is not impossible that Saturday could increase from the Friday number (without midnights) or that the Sunday drop could be softer than 35%.

HARD COPY!

CHILDREN DRESSED UP IN FETISH GEAR!

Is your child safe?

Candidate for funniest moment in the entire movie, simply because the whole exchange was so easy to miss.
RDJ comes in speaking a mile a minute and drops in a line about "That man is playing Galaga. Am I the only one who noticed?" before moving right on to plot related stuff. And then just as the scene ends, we get a 2 second shot of the dude turning the game back on

:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
That was great lol

Went to the 4:15 showing here and the theaters are rarely packed but there werent many open seats at my showing and people had to take those neck breaking front row seats lol. When we got out the 7 o'clock showing had a huge line and the lobby was a mess of people.

The movie was awesome. I thought it had great pacing, humor, and over the top action. Hulk has one of my all time favorite scenes in this movie.
When Loki tells him to stop and bow to him, then Hulk just grabs him and bangs him on the floor like a looney tunes character
my theater could not stop laughing and were talking about it even after the movie ended.

I was wondering about that and that the $175 million estimate seemed low from the Friday totals. Considering the silly good word of mouth, couldn't Saturday go up from the non-midnight $62 million Friday, and the Sunday drop softer than 35%, and the total push close to $200 million? Say $80 million Friday, $70 million Saturday, $40-$50 Sunday.

I think the funny moments in this movie make it fun for even non-comic fans. My girlfriend doesn't care for action movies but she laughed at most of the jokes so they made the movie a lot more enjoyable for her.

I was really happy they teased
Hulk picking up Mjolnir here.
I hope it actually happens in a future film.

And then
the Hulk's second transformation followed by him punching the giant flying metal slug right in the fucking nose, stopping it dead in it's tracks...
Sheeeeeeeeeeit.

Iron Man deflecting his repulsor beams off of Cap's shield
was another big holy shit moment for me.

This was a comic book come to life in every sense of the phrase. I'm glad I was alive to see it.

Doesn't seem like it was mentioned here but I also chuckled out loud at
Stark calling Thor "Point Break"
. Either the audience missed it or they were too damn young to get it!

The theater I typically go to had two 8:00 showings and both sold out. (may not seem like much but being a dine-in theater, it's very rare) It was disappointing that I had to sit in the front row since 3/4 of the seats were already taken by reserved seating.

That was yet another amazing if-you-blink-youll-miss-it moment.

I LOLed at that too. Also when Stark asked Banner how he kept so calm and one of his ideas was "a big bag of weed". I think most of the audience missed it because they were still laughing from the previous line.

Spider-Man 3 actually went up slightly on Saturday in comparison to it's Friday when midnights are taken out. It then only dropped 22% on Sunday. If The Avengers follows that path then it's looking at an absolutely crazy weekend.

That, and Stark calling Hawkeye
Legolas
. Lol.

I think I was the only one in my theatre who laughed at that. It was such a quick one. So well placed.

Totally agree.

Best Cap moment had to be
where he tells those cops all those orders and they are like why should we listen to you? Then Cap kicks the crap out 4-5 aliens and cuts the arm off the last one, and the cop immediately turns around and starts doing exactly what Cap told him to do.

I don't know why but I liked the "exchange" between Stark and Widow on the
Helicarrier deck

paraphrased
"How does Fury look at these displays?
"He turns."

That was so Tony :lol
