Doesn't seem like it was mentioned here but I also chuckled out loud at
Stark calling Thor "Point Break"
. Either the audience missed it or they were too damn young to get it!

I watched it in German once and they dubbed it differently: re-translated
Nice swing, Conan.

Normally I am very critical of dubbing, but that was a great translation. (as Point Break would make no sense to a German audience)

What a... a... Fucking... goddamn that was awesome. I geeked the fuck out during the
hulk smash
sequence. I started hitting my friends on either side of me. I couldn't contain myself.

I'm sad I did not get to
hear the "Puny God" line from Hulk because the audience was still erupting from the asswhooping he gave Loki.
I'm sure when I watch it again tonight I'll miss it again. I felt like I might have missed a handful of great lines because the movie was a little too laugh out loud funny. I will have to keep an ear open for the
Legolas
one too.

Nobody in my theater laughed at the
Point Break
quip either.

It was reported that this got an audience CinemaScore of A+. How does that compare to the other movies near the record weekend?

Spider-Man 3 actually went up slightly on Saturday in comparison to it's Friday when midnights are taken out. It then only dropped 22% on Sunday. If The Avengers follows that path then it's looking at an absolutely crazy weekend.

Almost every early May marvel movie has had an increase on Saturday over Friday minus midnights. The only exception I can find was X-men Origins: Wolverine which dropped 2.5%

Spider-man 1 and 3, Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor and X-men 2 all increased Friday to Saturday if you minus Friday midnights.

That is why I think 62M is about the lowest the Avengers will go today. 65-70M is definitely possible.

60% of the tickets sold on Friday was for 3D. Big reason the numbers are so high.

Pretty shameless how so many people are being duped to see this in 3D.

Yeah, the first weekend in May is possibly the best slot in the whole year. People are starved for a big spectacle movie by that time.

Ya, I had no choice for the midnight showing. It was Imax 3D or nothing.

Theatres in my area are pretty much the same as that graphic you posted. 3-4 screens dedicated to the Avengers. One screen per theatre in 2D. I should be going to a 2D matinee tomorrow though.

At my theater there are far more 3D showings. Still catching the 2D one tonight with my girlfriend. High expectations for this.

My theatre had more 3D than 2D options too. My point was just that there is still a 2D option, so no one is forced into anything.

The Avengers probably benefited from the fact that we had an extremely weak April slate this year as well. Last April had three $100M films and one $200M film. Other than Hunger games holdover business, nothing will come close to breaking $100M this April. Think like a Man will be the highest grossing April film with $85-90M when it finishes.

I really wish Spider-Man could get in on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, oh well.

Would have been nice to see some Ultimate stuff and having him being trained up by the Avengers in a sequel. I hear the cartoon based on this premise isn't that great.

That, and Stark calling Hawkeye
Legolas
. Lol.

Both great bits. No one except me and my friends laughed at the first. The second some laughed in the front with me (which I think destroyed my eyes jesus. Front row 3d is insane) because they probably heard it.

Oh, obviously. So is the consensus on the 3D that it's not very well done? I think I heard it was post-conversion, which is never a good thing.

I can't believe how popular this movie is. Just about everyone I know wants to see this. How well do you guys think Marvel did in marketing this movie through the other movies (Cap, Thor, Iron Man)? Is that why seemingly everybody is drooling over it?

Point is the movie shouldn't be in 3D in the first place, it wasn't filmed in 3D so it just diminishes the experience. It's nothing more than a shameless money grab.

People are being duped by paying more for 3D that doesn't add shit.

Well considering how many people think it will hit or top $200 million it's not that crazy.

I am getting a Pirates 3 vibe from TDKR. Not in terms of quality, but in terms of expectations. Many people expected Pirates 3 to hit $160-175M after seeing Spider-man 3's first weekend. They figured that Pirates 2 broke the first Spider-Man movie's record so this naturally had to become the new record holder. Many a bitter tear when that movie made $140M including the Thursday 10pm showings.

I don't think it is a given that TDKR will massively improve on the opening of TDK.

I liked it, but my only gripe was that the "army" at the end was pretty much cannon fodder for the avengers and you never really felt that the good guys were in any real sort of danger.
Hawkeye wasn't even taking cover. Plus, you had a lot of silly action moments in that final battle that reminded me of the mindless action of transformers 2/3.
I dunno... maybe I'm jaded

It's the 2nd most anticipated film for females this summer after Snow White and the Huntsman. It was also ranked 2nd for makes behind TDKR (3rd for females).

The Avengers were doing fine during the first wave, but they were pretty much losing just before the portal closed, Iron Man was almost out of power, Hulk was being contained and so on.

The difference is people were disappointed with the crap they were served with in Pirates 2. Also, Pirates 3 came only a year after and it wasn't expected to be the final movie.

TDKR has been built up since 2008, people LOVE Nolan and this is the final chapter just like Harry Potter DH2 and Return of the King.
