Marvel got a comic guy to do Avengers, and it paid off big.

I wonder if WB/DC is about to drop a giant pile of money in front of Kevin Smith...

That just means that Smith would create an even bigger hit, then? Right?

I'm pretty sure Smith has said that he never wants to work on a studio film again. He's financing his own films (well he has one more and plans to stop directing after that one). Then again, going back against what he said previously does sound like Kevin Smith as well.

They actually did this for a Superman movie at one point, but then it fell through when Tim Burton came aboard and also botched it.

I just realized.

Some day, Hugh Jackman isn't gonna be Wolverine anymore.

Whether it's because they reboot it, or Marvel gets the rights back and doesn't want to have the connection with the Fox movies, or Jackman gets too old.

He's been Wolverine in 5 movies over 12 years, 6 movies if The Wolverine actually comes out next year.

I'm sure they'll fine a good replacement, but it's gonna be weird. His movies may have had their ups and downs - mostly downs, all told - but his performance as Wolverine was kinda perfect. Iconic, really.

God damn Hugh Jackman. Call it brain damage or whatever, but I always get him confused with Richard Armitage of all people.

Lost a bar bet because I thought it was weird that Hugh made a cameo in Captain America as the hydra spy/saboteur. Now I'll just never forgive the man. Its easier that way.

I was very bored all throughout Avengers because it lacked soul. .

:lol

No, you accurately described your experience with pretty much everything.

It was an action packed comic book movie that does exactly what it needs to. It has colorful animated characters, and over the top and at times nonsensical plot, and lots of action. The difference between Avengers and most comic book flicks is that this was done considerably better than others, striking a great balance.

But hey, I guess if it doesn't have crazy "deep" plot and character development, it's "vapid". You're such a joke character sometimes.

That just means that Smith would create an even bigger hit out of left field, then? Right?

no. Lets not get into this mindset that fanboys make for good comic movie making unless they have the common sense to realize they are making a comics book movie that must appeal to the wide audience possible.

As all sensible people do.

God dammit Joss Whedon, what the fuck. Stop making me like you!

A good man indeed.

I do too.

Can't fault him for being right. SM2 is still a great movie and I prefer BB over TDK any day of the week.

*nods* Good man.

My man Joss. Right on the money.

Joss, my man!

Makes sense, BB was an actual Batman movie.

Spidey 2 defense force assemble!

Still FOX. They would have lost them this year, but they started work on a reboot to keep the rights.

Just sad. DD would benefit from long form storytelling on TV. So would the Punisher. With DD , you can tell so many awesome stories provided you get the key thing right- the depiction of his powers. Sadly Fox have no fucking clue.

I managed to find someone on campus who had the Ultimates one and two and he's letting me borrow them. Hopefully I'll be able to read through them this week.

Also I'm watching Thor right now and this movie is much better than I remembered. Thor's power in the first battle against the Frost Giants just makes me hope for a huge epic battle in Avengers 2 where the team is able to just fight with no restraint or worry of harming civilians.

Thor doing this and then Hulk doing his thunder clap thing would truly be something to behold.

I think people here are confusing 'simple' with ''shallow and vapid''.
Avengers isn't stupid just because it doesn't try to address some inner human conflicts. It's wise to not engage in something like that, lest the film become a contrived, self-indulgent borefest. You can't have something like that in a film with so many important characters.

GAF surprises me sometimes. It's like you guys want another Ang Lee's Hulk/Superman returns.

Spider-Man says hello.

Dude. DUDE. That would be awesome. It would be like Law & Order with ass kicking.

Spiderman?
What were the stakes in Spiderman? People complain of the stakes in the avengers being nigh non-existent. But what were the stakes in Spiderman?
Green Goblin taking over...New York? I don't know, but I'd really like to know.

I'd love another of the former.

Poodles, man. Poodles.
Connelly was perfect though. She was the last remaining vestige of what could have been a great film in that one. She always was.
I'd rather have another superman returns though. It'd be boring as fuck, but at least it would look good.

Edit:
I really liked Spiderman btw. Still a fun film to watch.

Joss, stop making me like you. Quote that is EXACTLY how I feel about certain comic book movies:

Joss Whedon said:
What, in your view, have been the great superhero movies?

I still think the first two “Spideys” were unmatched. I think they captured the comic and found some cinematic extensions of that that were purely cinematic. Again, I think “Watchmen” was slavishly adherent to the comic, and that sometimes is almost as bad as completely ignoring the comic and just using the title. I think “Batman Begins” is certainly my favorite Batman movie I’ve seen.

Huh, not “The Dark Knight”? Most people would say “The Dark Knight.”

“The Dark Knight,” for me, has the same problem that every other “Batman” movie has. It’s not about Batman. I think Heath Ledger is just phenomenal and the character of the Joker is beautifully written. He has a particular philosophy that he carries throughout the movie. He has one of the best bad guy schemes. Bad guy schemes are actually very hard to come up with. I love his movie, but I always feel like Batman gets short shrift. In “Batman Begins,” the pathological, unbalanced, needy, scary person in the movie is Batman. That’s what every “Batman” movie should be.

But this one is what really got me.

Joss Whedon said:
For a writer-director, you have an unusually strong “brand.” You come with a built-in audience with a certain idea of what a Joss Whedon movie is.

Yes, but that built-in audience isn’t actually big enough to register on the scale of what “Avengers” needs to accomplish in the marketplace. The fact is some people really love my work, some people not so much, but at the end of the day I don’t want anybody coming out of the movie thinking about me. I want them thinking about the Avengers. I want to subsume myself in the piece. Tony Stark is enormously fun for me to write because he makes quips and he’s silly and he’s fun and he’s smart. I love writing him. But I don’t want people go, “Ha, that’s a Joss line.” I want them to think, “That’s a Tony line.”

He knew that he had to put his style in check. Were there touches of Whedonisms and whatnot in there? Of course. But I thought it was extremely toned down. He realized that he had to stay true to the characters, as The Avengers were the stars. Not Joss Whedon.
