EA DICE withdrew nearly every official server from BF3 (PS360)

is BF1943 in the same situation?

I play that game almost daily but don't know if they are private or official servers.

really that's the best you can do??

how about supporting custom servers and providing official servers with vanilla-rules for your games?

also known as:common sense.

you don't let the custom servers be the main servers, unless its a 5+year old game.

eh, custom servers have been the backbone of almost all big PC-shooters since forever.

as I explained already: the reason the official servers stay empty is because nobody fills them and matchmaking doesn't put anybody on empty servers.

Plus, you've gotta feel a bit silly for saying that renting a server on top of an xbox live gold subscription isn't cool. It's your fault that you pay for an xbox live gold subscription when there are alternatives. EA makes enough shitty decisions on their own that they shouldn't have to shoulder your shitty decisions as well and should be praised for even allowing consolites the ability to operate dedicated servers.

Seriously, DICE is the first dev to offer this and people are whining because it gives them more choice than any other multiplayer game.

And I also love the people who complain about paying the dedicated server fee when they are already paying through the nose for a totally useless service like Xbox Live which demands you pay Microsoft so they can throw ads at you.

From an user perspective where exactly is the problem? There are more servers now then there's ever been.

And I don't know how it's like on consoles, but on PC I never played on EA servers to begin with, there's always other ones that are better.

Alright you clearly work for EA or are high on the marijuana so I'm out.

Either I'm totally missing something or people are complaining about something that has been prevalent in PC gaming for years now.

Those PC players aren't being presented with an online fee and an 'online pass' providing access to online features in the game, and then having to rely on another player propping up the game on top of all of those.

Do you usually pay the publisher a monthly fee to run those servers?

I complained before that i wish the possibility for unranked servers still existed. I can understand why ranked matches need to be rented from EA to prevent too much stat hacking (not that they have been good at preventing it) but it's time DICE released the server files for truly private servers (which would probably also help the modding community).

direct answer to the question: it exists but as far as i know most work on normal servers.

dude mainly i play on pc,im familiar with custom servers.....

i search now on ps3 and didnt find an "official" server.

i typed official in search and brings servers like "neogaf official server" etc

so you can say that probably you can't play vanilla bf3 anymore lol........

half a year later?looooooooooong time.its like unreal tournament(1999) now,but after some months....

(long time to play u.t. btw...)

Online fee is in reference to Xbox Live, right? (Edit: If so, I'm not sure how that's relevant.)

Online pass is a non-factor since there's no such thing as a used copy of Battlefield 3 PC.

PC gamers already rely on other gamers to pay for the servers.

I thought it was strange all the games I jumped into were on custom servers, no idea people were paying for them or even that the official servers were taken down.
Some of those custom servers come with so much rules, I saw one where if you shot the guy running the server's chopper down you would get kicked.
KuGsj.gif

The way things are going I might just stop gaming altogether.

You've never been able to host your own ranked dedicated server for a battlefield game. 1942 and Vietnam were not ranked, so server files were provided freely. Battlefield 2 and 2142 you could only rent a ranked server through EA or an EA partner, the only dedicated hosting files provided were for unranked servers.

With Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, there are only ranked servers, and so there are no dedicated server files provided. Nothing is different with regards to ranked servers from seven years ago when BF2 came out, which is still being played on purely rented servers.

Is there any other game out there that doesn't allow you to pick your own host for servers? I was under the assumption only EA pulls this crap. And unless you have hard evidence EA isn't getting a cut from this "partnership", I'll operate under the belief they're getting something for it. So, yeah, fuck EA. They suck. At everything.

Just another reason to hate the OCD crap with today's games then.

EA shuts down official servers and everyone whines

EA allows for private servers so a game can last forever and everyone whines

Typical GAF

Not that I care, but most people like "default" servers and settings. All these private servers apparently have custom settings and I've had friends tell me they were trying to search for just a room with normal settings but had no luck.

Either their search skills fail or they have to pay money to rent a server, to play a game they already bought on a system they have to pay to play that game online.

there were never official UT servers as far as i know.

if no one is paying them, no one is playing the game, and if no one is playing the game, they'd just shut everything down.

No, not really. If official servers fully seize to exist and the server dependency was purely driven by fan rentals then in the event where the game was still being sold by large numbers and none of the rented servers were active then EA could face huge community backlash if not outright lawsuit given that there is no mention of this pivotal point in the ToS or user agreement (I assume).

Unchecked this has serious future ramifications. Imagine:

1. Pay for the game (which includes the MP)
2. Pay for DLCs (on disc)
3. Pay to play online per month to support rented servers.
4. Without any strict ToS when it comes to moderation, things online would start to get pretty chaotic.

I got cs:source and 8 years later i havent paid an extra cent to kee playing and the community is still large enough to play at any time even just sticking to my own country. most of the servers are run by privately owned companies or isp's but we never pay a cent to play. granted the community is much smaller with only 60,000 concurrent players at any given second of the day

Is it possible for batlefield to have this sort of popularity without having to pay for server time and just rely on isp's and the enthusiast competitive community to pay for servers? I never play console shooters online so maybe it is different to how it works on the pc but do we need dedicated servers from ea?

So I'm saying that it seems like a bit of a cheek for EA to rely on the community propping up the game (literally) after all of that.

I don't know, I don't like the sound of it - nor do I want other companies to follow suit.

So if servers lords today choose they want to play only that game mode, that single map, the 95% of players can do nothing but play with them?

Also: who the fuck pays to rent a server on XBL? 30$ x 1 year = 360$ = new gfx card, game and processor, play the game for free forever. Not counting Gold money obviously.
I mean, EA is shit, but someone payed 2, 3 times the amount I pay (with Fifa and BF) to get slapped in the face with that shit. We encouraged them.

And when the rental numbers drop, do you think EA is going to pick up the slack again?
Well, yes, assuming they want to keep selling you things.

I mean, they could shut off every server two minutes from now, but I don't think that actually gains them anything.

The game has gone shit after all the private servers with 500-1000% ticket games that go on and on and run like crap (gulf of Oman freezes 99.99% now for me).

This was my MP fix since release but now after the shitty servers its just hard to get into it.

If you want EA/DICE official servers on consoles, search "DICE," "EA," or "P" in the search bar!

Attention grabbing code for attention grabbing. These are the search query you need to use to find these.

Then to be sure they're EA/DICE owned you need to look at the server info (click X/A) and see if the "Server Owner" is "EA/DICE" if it isn't it's someone using that name to attempt to get people like you that are trying to avoid their server to quickly join. DO NOT PRESS TRIANGLE/Y. That quick joins you.

Take a little time to FIND these and then favorite them with square/X and you can use your favorite tab on the browser to join them later.

Yes, Bad Company 2 and BF 3 don't allow for unranked servers, you can only buy them from EA because DICE hasn't released the server files.

the enthusiast community is happily renting servers though.

Neogaf official server has normal setting.

but.

Most of the community don't want to play normal settings ->
Most of PS3-GAF want to play with the community->
Most of PS3-GAF plays on the high ticket servers ->
normal server sinks to the bottom of searches with low player count ->
Gaf whines about no normal server

catch-22.

So reading this thread, I can't tell who is being sarcastic, who is feigning ignorance to better protect their corporate masters, who is feigning ignorance to protect a publisher or developer they like, and who is legitimately ignorant.

Bravo, the line has been officially blurred and the internet is no longer useful to anyone.

People are completely stupid when they are using a server browser it seems. Alan Kertz seems to be right. *sigh*

"DICE," "EA," "P" USE THEM! >_<

This thread just feels like console gamers experiencing what's been the norm in PC gaming for a while now, except said gamers are trying to make it look like some crime against the consumer. I think a lot of people aren't realizing that the game will survive as long as there is demand to play it. Too many people in this thread are acting like EA is bending them over and forcing them to pay up for a server. BF3 PC has sustained itself primarily on custom servers and I have yet to feel like I've been forced to pay for a server.

I don't think I even got that. Been playing Battlefield a long time and that map is a fucking abortion.

Here's the awesome thing. You can rent a server and customize it anyway you see fit!

I don't want to pay to setup and play the Epic Battles servers that DICE had. I have to dig through rented servers with maps I don't want to play and high tickets and hope I don't get booted or banned for whatever stupid reason. The '-[DICE]- Epic Battles' servers were perfect before the patch. Then they screwed them up to where the maps Wake Island and Sharqi Peninsula wouldn't come up in rotation, even though they were in the rotation. Now, Epic Battles can't be found. DICE are screw ups and I likely will avoid their next games.

Ironically there are more PC BF3 players in here than the general console crowd..

There is a difference between providing the source files and letting you host the game and making you pay in order to host a server.

Those are two different models.

so now that they have no server cost they don't need online passes to support those non-existing costs, right? right? guys? guuuuuuyssssss?

-[DICE]- CONQUEST Server #

That's an official server. Click that, see the owner? DICE/EA? Then you're golden.

Issue is in that photo you're seeing people use [DICE] as a search term. DICE/EA need to make these three terms a no-go for owners to stop people from "spoofing" servers to be like theirs to gain people that don't want to play shitty 500% conquest.

?

EA DICE haven't provided source files since BF1942 and Vietnam, what are you talking about? The models on BF3 PC and console are practically the same.
