really that's the best you can do??
how about supporting custom servers and providing official servers with vanilla-rules for your games?
also known as:common sense.
you don't let the custom servers be the main servers, unless its a 5+year old game.
Plus, you've gotta feel a bit silly for saying that renting a server on top of an xbox live gold subscription isn't cool. It's your fault that you pay for an xbox live gold subscription when there are alternatives. EA makes enough shitty decisions on their own that they shouldn't have to shoulder your shitty decisions as well and should be praised for even allowing consolites the ability to operate dedicated servers.
eh, custom servers have been the backbone of almost all big PC-shooters since forever.
Seriously, DICE is the first dev to offer this and people are whining because it gives them more choice than any other multiplayer game.
Either I'm totally missing something or people are complaining about something that has been prevalent in PC gaming for years now.

Do you usually pay the publisher a monthly fee to run those servers?

as I explained already: the reason the official servers stay empty is because nobody fills them and matchmaking doesn't put anybody on empty servers.
Online fee is in reference to Xbox Live, right? (Edit: If so, I'm not sure how that's relevant.)Those PC players aren't being presented with an online fee and an 'online pass' providing access to online features in the game, and then having to rely on another player propping up the game on top of all of those.

And I also love the people who complain about paying the dedicated server fee when they are already paying through the nose for a totally useless service like Xbox Live which demands you pay Microsoft so they can throw ads at you.
You've never been able to host your own ranked dedicated server for a battlefield game. 1942 and Vietnam were not ranked, so server files were provided freely. Battlefield 2 and 2142 you could only rent a ranked server through EA or an EA partner, the only dedicated hosting files provided were for unranked servers.
With Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, there are only ranked servers, and so there are no dedicated server files provided. Nothing is different from seven years ago when BF2 came out, which is still being played on purely rented servers.
EA shuts down official servers and everyone whines
EA allows for private servers so a game can last forever and everyone whines
Typical GAF
dude mainly i play on pc,im familiar with custom servers.....
i search now on ps3 and didnt find an "official" server.
i typed official in search and brings servers like "neogaf official server" etc
so you can say that probably you can't play vanilla bf3 anymore lol........
half a year later?looooooooooong time.its like unreal tournament(1999) now,after some months....
(long time to play u.t. btw...)
if no one is paying them, no one is playing the game, and if no one is playing the game, they'd just shut everything down.
:lol @ Tehran Highway. I think I only ever enjoyed playing that map once.
Rent a server fucked BF3 up. I just want Conquest Epic Battles, please.

Online pass is a non-factor since there's no such thing as a used copy of Battlefield 3 PC.
PC gamers already rely on other gamers to pay for the servers.
Well, yes, assuming they want to keep selling you things. And when the rental numbers drop, do you think EA is going to pick up the slack again?

I got cs:source and 8 years later i havent paid an extra cent to kee playing and the community is still large enough to play at any time even just sticking to my own country. most of the servers are run by privately owned companies or isp's but we never pay a cent to play. granted the community is much smaller with only 60,000 concurrent players at any given second of the day
Is it possible for batlefield to have this sort of popularity without having to pay for server time and just rely on isp's and the enthusiast competitive community to pay for servers? I never play console shooters online so maybe it is different to how it works on the pc but do we need dedicated servers from ea?

I stopped playing BF3 a couple months ago. Has private servers significantly changed the experience?
For you, my friend:
This thread just feels like console gamers experiencing what's been the norm in PC gaming for a while now, except said gamers are trying to make it look like some crime against the consumer. I think a lot of people aren't realizing that the game will survive as long as there is demand to play it. Too many people in this thread are acting like EA is bending them over and forcing them to pay up for a server. BF3 PC has sustained itself primarily on custom servers and I have yet to feel like I've been forced to pay for a server. So I'm saying that it seems like a bit of a cheek for EA to rely on the community propping up the game (literally) after all of that.
I don't know, I don't like the sound of it - nor do I want other companies to follow suit.

If you want EA/DICE official servers on consoles, search "DICE," "EA," or "P" in the search bar!
Attention grabbing code for attention grabbing. These are the search query you need to use to find these.
Then to be sure they're EA/DICE owned you need to look at the server info (click X/A) and see if the "Server Owner" is "EA/DICE" if it isn't it's someone using that name to attempt to get people like you that are trying to avoid their server to quickly join. DO NOT PRESS TRIANGLE/Y. That quick joins you.
Take a little time to FIND these and then favorite them with square/X and you can use your favorite tab on the browser to join them later.
Neogaf official server has normal setting.
but.
Most of the community don't want to play normal settings ->
Most of PS3-GAF want to play with the community->
Most of PS3-GAF plays on the high ticket servers ->
normal server sinks to the bottom of searches with low player count ->
Gaf whines about no normal server
catch-22.
I don't think I even got that. Been playing Battlefield a long time and that map is a fucking abortion.
Here's the awesome thing. You can rent a server and customize it anyway you see fit!

?There is a difference between providing the source files and letting you host the game and making you pay in order to host a server.
Those are two different models.
Not a catch-22 if you stopped playing babby mode and made it pro mode. Just sayin'. I'd be on your server if it was the better mode.
