The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

They must have really watched Man on Fire over and over during development. All that shit with the video effects and specific spoken words being highlighted on-screen. It's a good movie but those are by far the worst parts of it.

For example.

Seems a bit heavy-handed, in a very bad way. Not liking the cut-scenes at all. Those Rockstar dudes think they're a lot cleverer than they actually are. Shooting looks good though.

Max 3 looks awesome. It had up to this point as well. The UI and controls look straight out of Max Payne 1&2.

I also loved Jeff's mid air painkiller reaction

Max Payne 3, outside of the multiplayer, is looks amazing. Looks like a Rockstar quality product through and through.

Agree...

On a sidenote, oh shit the full movie on Youtube lol... Bookmarked!

Jesus. It's so blatant. lol

lolwut? this is where you draw the line? rockstar has made a fortune lifting from movies, vice city was essentially scarface.

trying to mimic a visual style from a movie from several years ago which a videogame hasnt done is perfectly acceptable.

I dunno, with the GTA games, they're parody, so it's all wink wink nudge nudge.
This feels like someone couldn't be bothered to come up with their own style and didn't want to use the old Max Payne style, so they just ripped off an old Tony Scott movie instead.

I mean, imagine if another film director used the exact same effects in their film. No one would be okay with that.

Max Payne definitely looks cool, though I'm not too keen on the glitchy effect on the cutscenes, very overdone even in the short section they showed. The way they handle having multiple guns is really neat, especially how he put the big one under his arm when he reloaded his pistol.

Also Ryan you can probably count the amount of times Ryan used bullet time on two hands. :(

The problem is it's paired with the inner monologue and does not fit at all.

Also explains why they transported Max to Latin America all of a sudden.

That aside, full-length movies on Youtube? I must be very late to the party here, didn't know that was happening.

I dunno about elsewhere but here in the UK you can rent a bunch of stuff legally on YouTube, some of it relatively recent too.

That Man on Fire upload however is not legal in the slightest.

Red Dead Redemption lifted scenes straight out of movies too, it's nothing new for Rockstar.

I'm surprised they chose to use the Man on Fire "important words on the screen!" gimmick, though. Like, that movie is a cult favorite and all, but I think every fan of that film I've ever talked to thought that shit was stupid.

I just think that there's a difference between referencing scenes from a film and referencing a specific style used in a specific film is all.

And yeah, it's a weird film to reference. It also reminded me of how many Washington/Scott films there have been since Man on Fire!

Max Payne 3 looks fine for what I want out of it, but I could see some people being really disappointed at least as far as presentation goes.

Looks so very underwhelming.
Pretty much how I''m feeling. It looks like a solid, capable game, but it doesn't really have anything that makes me want to play it over replaying MP2. I'm just not finding the setting or presentation to be up my alley. At least, not what I would want from a Max Payne game.

right before ryan mentioned michael mann, i was thinking to myself how much max in that suit reminded me of:

Just watched this, it's legit, V=9 A=9 :p

Full length movies on Youtube. Colour me pleasantly surprised, even if legally iffy.

Max Payne 3 looks like a pretty standard 3rd person shooter with all the fancy rockstar physics tech. might just be the beers I had, but those cutscenes were pretty nauseating.

I can see why the game is getting scores all over the place.

Good lord what were they thinking with those awful effects in the cutscenes. I couldn't keep watching because I was getting a headache.

Yeah, it was a bit overkill, in my opinion.

Honestly, despite how cool it was, the mutilation of the people you were shooting in slowmo were the bigger offender for me, personally. It felt way out of place in a Max Payne game, but I guess that's the direction they're going.

Nope, not just you. They are garish with no restraint whatsoever. It's a novel concept that, used in moderation, would have been an effective compliment to Max Payne's current mental stability. But to use the effect in every shot it's just ridiculous, ugly and makes me not want to look at it or play the game.

Is the voice actor for Max different? I'm only going by memory of the two first games, but to me it actually sounds more like Jon St. John doing a Max Payne impression. Could be the delivery that's iffy too, i don't know.

Same guy. Keep it mind it's been about 9 years. So it won't sound exactly the same.
