Considering we just had a whole movie of Thor coming to grips with his worthiness I didn't think that scene worked at all.
It was actually quite silly, and how long did he stay out there deciding whether he was worthy or not? 3 hours?
The first time, the scene doesn't work because there are too many scenes between him walking up to the hammer hesitantly, and finally picking it up. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it goes:
- Thor walks up to the hammer
- Captain and Iron man talking for 2-3 minutes
- the "you got a condition" scene
- a good 2-3 minute long scene between Hawkeye and Black Widow
- Iron Man suiting up and the rest getting into the jet thing
- "hey, those Captain America cards were actually in his locker"
- jet flies off, music swells and...
- Thor finally lifts the hammer
Second time around though, the scene really worked for me because I got it. It's not just Thor. All the characters are feeling unworthy, and all of them are 'lifting the hammer' so to speak.
