Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

I just installed Fallout NV ultimate edition PC and really want to add some mods, specifically those that add graphic enhancements, like Nevada Skies and anything that will improve NPC faces, looks etc. lighting enhancements also. I'm not as interested in game alterations but wouldn't mind that.

I am a little overwhelmed with the options and this thread. I read an article about best mods and the listed the NVAMP (I think) as an all inclusive mod but reading install instructions has me all perplexed :)

If someone doesn't mind PMing me who is well versed in NV mods, please I really want the assistance.

Thanks!!

I was in the same situation a few weeks ago and got the suggestion to install project nevada, nevada skies and then choose other mods depending on what you want. Something Awful has a good list of the best mods here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3376713

I'll PM you.

So, question: will the Project Mikoto hair pack work for F3 on top of New Vegas?

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=35878

If not, what other good hair compilation mods are there?

What I'm asking here, really, is where da hairstyles at. Jesus, a ponytail would be nice, at least.
You can try lings: http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/8942

Nevada skies - ok, but it looks really colourful, almost cartooney outside sometimes. I didn't mind the faded 50s tv show look in the first place. Darker nights are awesome, though.

Electro city - very nice. It adds a whole bunch of lights around the place which makes the darker nights from nevada skies even more impressive. I enabled the street lights as well, so it's easier to get around outside at night, but you still get a great sense of going off into the dangerous dark areas away from the main road.

Flashlight - thought this might be cool for going off the main road at night, but it's terrible. I ended up switching this off and just dealing with the darkness.

DK bullet time - Incredible. It uses up your vats points to give you max payne style slow motion. If using vats is not for you, this is an excellent alternative way to play. Love it.

I got the same issue with Nevada skies no matter which version I used. Dropped it like hard candy and haven't looked back. Love Electro City though.

One mod that I have come to love that is The New Bison Steve Hotel and Lucky Casino: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=40433
I enjoyed doing the quest, but I have come to really love the player homes made available by the quest. Buck's Place along with the hotel itself have inventory sorters! With a few clicks my extra junk is stored in nice sorted lockers. If you are like me and always have a hard time emptying out your pockets to save carrying space, this feature alone will make the game more enjoyable.

That looks pretty damn cool! Cheers for the heads up.

Those intending to play some New Vegas over the long weekend may enjoy my new mod entitled 'Rotface to Riches'. It's a shortish quest mod that re-adds a quest that was cut from the finished game.

Ghouls in pimp suits and unforeseeen consequences await.

Wow, thanks for this. I love restoration projects. Glad to know it's the first of many, too.

Thanks, but don't get too excited - there seems to be very little cut content in FNV, and what there is seems to have been carefully excised with generally just tantalising glimpses here and there (like the very end of a huuuuge quest for Veronica). Rotface was basically all done apart from the endings (and the code that held it all together - which is now around 10 times bigger since I finished working on it), but the next cut project I want to work on was only around 10% finished if that when it was scrapped. It's a very intriguing one (and funnily enough I'm pretty sure one of Rotface's hints relates to it) that involves restoring a cut companion and accompanying quest. There's a barely a single line of dialogue written for it, so I'll have to write it from scratch based on intent left in the script files.

Let's just say this companion would be very helpful to people running J Sawyer's mod.

Kinda hard not to get excited when you're promising new companions :P

Is there any mod that when you kill someone, their bodyparts remain intact to NPC body. I just don't want to see an arm, leg or eye on the floor or flying everywhere.

And I would want to know if New Vegas to Fallout 3 mod is playable, like all the quest are working properly for Fallout 3. Is amazing how someone manage to put both games and you can actually play with NV weapons and perks.

Never tried it but I heard people say it works: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/41480

Or you mean the other way around, to be able to go to the Mojave on Fallout 3? In that case, why would you want that?

Try this for gore: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/41944

Oh no, not that kind way, no point to play in the method. The single thing that I actually I miss from Fallout 3 are the clouds. Those were so realistic compare to New Vegas clouds, appearing in small number. I need to look up to max in order to see of them.

Thanks for both. I will try them out soon.

I'm sure you have, but it's better to be sure, so have you tried Nevada Skies? Sounds like that'll be right up your alley and I can't see myself playing NV without it. It's the equivalent to Fellout in FO3.

I can't get No Dialog Tags to work, is one of my other mods working against it?

Code:
FalloutNV.esm
DeadMoney.esm
HonestHearts.esm
OldWorldBlues.esm
LonesomeRoad.esm
CaravanPack.esm
ClassicPack.esm
MercenaryPack.esm
GunRunnersArsenal.esm
TribalPack.esm
oHUD.esm
The Mod Configuration Menu.esp
DarNifiedUINV.esp
jsawyer.esp
noautoaim.esp
ProjectRealityMkIv5HDR.esp

oHUD and DarnUI are obviously gonna fiddle with your GUI, so I would guess there could be a conflict there. Try turning those off and see if it works. I suspect oHUD, but could be either.

Very nice mod you found there, by the way.

Well.. it does look like it was working all along, it's just that the first person I talked to (Doc Mitchell) didn't have one of his tags removed.

I checked with FNVEdit as well and everything seem to be working as intended, guess I should notify the author about the tag though so that he can remove it.

Edit: I found another mod that did the same thing.

Damn, what a bug. He's surely the first person about 99% of people are going to try it on.

Worked fine when I tried it a few months ago. I didn't do all the F3 quests that way, but had no problem with the ones I tried. It was sometimes tricky taking followers from one game to another. That's about the only problem.

I just want to say that, the mod is fantastic. I just don't know how to show my gratitude and my thanks towards the modders (like milions of words are in my head right now ) how made the impossible possible, to have both games in one, to come and go everytime you like. I didn't expected that it was possible for New Vegas to accept so much content from Fallout 3 without braking any limit so far.
I don't know if is me but I notice the textures from Fallout 3 are a bit more HD, possible from New Vegas new engine, making the textures to run a bit better.

I can't belive I'm playing this right now because actually I wanted so badly to happen because it became one of my dearest dreams after I start playing New Vegas DLC, they gave me the old Fallout 3 memories and felt how nostalgia hit me.

Now I play all the content from New Vegas plus Gun Runners Arsenal into Wasteland and Fallout 3 content to New Vegas. I can't belive that I forgot how great Fallout 3 is than New Vegas on many things. I missed Raiders and specially their fighting & voices "Come on boys, fresh meat." Fallout 3 is better organized, more robots and animals out in the waste, with Mister Gutsy patriot voice and yao guai bear being killed with Anti Material Rifle from one shot. Ah, I would say so many goods things about this mod, but I think I said enough.

So far the more than 5 crashes I didn't got and I finished Operation Anchorage without problems, getting the stealth suit for New Vegas.

Thank guys, the mod is incredible and working just great.

Why won't you post your issue? That's usually the best way to get an answer.

I just didn't think anyone was here.

Current issues:

1. Launching with Fose, even with every mod turned off crashes the game as the exact same point every time, right after Liam Niieson asks me if I am a "Boy or girl".

2. Launching Fose with a mod turned on brings about an immediate crash.

3. Activating the lone wanderer pack brings about a couple error messages regarding textures.

4. FOMM crashes frequently, even when using the Fallout 3 only download. The FO3/NV will no longer even open. (It worked fine until I followed the steps on the video).

5. Now, even trying to run Fallout on steam has an instant crash.

Because it makes far more sense to get someone to say "yes! I will absolutely commit myself to helping you with your problem, regardless of what it is, because I know everything about every aspect of this game" before he would trouble himself to type it all out, of course!

I am sorry, it is gone now.

1-2. Are you sure you've installed it correctly? The .dll and .exe files are in the main game directory? Sure sounds like some files are missing somewhere.

3. The game is probably looking for textures that aren't there. Most likely isn't installed correctly or it's a known problem. If you're installing through something like the Nexus Mod Manager there's a pretty big chance that the mod isn't packaged correctly for automatic installation and you should install it manually or make your own mod manager package. Check the readme of the mod.

4. That video is two years old, I wouldn't trust it with how fast Beth modding develops.

5. Try verifying the integrity of the game files through Steam.

1. .dll, and .exe? Can you explain this a bit more.

2. Could you suggest a different tutorial. I will never be able to understand this unless there is set of easy to understand steps I can follow. I really am not good with modding in general.

1. When you download FOSE, the instructions tell you what files to put where. Did you do that?

2. As for tutorials, the best place to start is the Bethesda forums, Fallout modding section. All the modders hang out there, so just ask and someone will help you in detail. With mods, it's very important that the files go in the right directory. Texture mods, for example, have lots of texture files that generally go in the Fallout/Data/Textures folder. This should be clearly spelled out in the readme. Remember, NEVER install a mod before reading its readme!

Hey Sean2, I just read your PM (it was night time in my country and then GAF imploded).

Please make you sure have the latest FOSE version (http://fose.silverlock.org/), that you've installed it correctly (put all the FOSE files in your Fallout3.exe folder, not in the data folder) and that you're launching the game through FOSE in FOMM.

I don't know what tutorial video you mean btw, mind linking me up so I see it?

Oops, I must have gotten your avatar mixed with the original link poster. He it is anyway. Its a bit confusing.

Is .exe just the general Fallout 3 folder in Steamapps?

Also, should I be uninstalling Fallout 3, and installing it in a different location?

Yup, general Fallout 3 folder. Don't uninstall anything yet, there's no reason why it shouldn't work on the Steam folder.

Disregard that video, it's pretty old and needlessly complicated.

Installing mods is very easy and shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

Simple steps:
1. Download the mod (preferably as a zip/rar or a FOMOD)
2. Fire up FOMM and go to the package manager
3. In the package manager, click on add new (as FOMOD) and select the zip/rar/FOMOD. It should add it up to your list in the package manager.
4. Select the added mod and activate it.
5. Close the package manager and you should see the mod in the load order list just below the Fallout3.esm, etc. It should be ticked.
6. Use BOSS to sort your load order (click on load order, and it should be last on the dropdown list). It's not perfect, but 90% of the times it works.

How do I stop FOMM from crashing?

Also, Boss is running, but is not in the Load order menu. How do I fix this?

Alright, this is becoming ridiculous. Nothing worked, so I uninstalled everything (Including Steam), and reinstalled to Documents folder. Fallout 3 worked completely fine. I download fose, followed those specific instructions for placement. I launched fose from Fomm, just to make sure it works before doing anything with mods. It crashed Fallout again, in the exact same place, only slightly earlier.

Very weird. Maybe you should try NMM if you're having problems FOMM. The process is usually very easy...

Alright, just a second.

I deleted all the fose files, and then started over. Downloaded Fose, and instead of directly installing, I opened them up in the extractor and directly moved all the necessary files EXCEPT src to the location you specified. I launched Fallout 3 with fose, and surprisingly nothing crashed. I have a strong hunch my neighbors heard me yell "YES" AT the top of my lungs.

*Update*

edit:

I managed to get Fallout 3 to launch with mods. Wanderers edition is functional, though I have yet to leave the vault. I have another problem now.

-Project Beauty does not even work apparently. After installing, activation was confirmed, yet it did not appear in my active mods.

- The game freezes at almost predictable intervals, which are very close. I tried to fix it by applying the .ini multicore trick, but that did nothing. The text file I edited did not say "Ini", but it was in the correct position. Have I screwed myself over?

- I am hoping someone here has experienced a successful install of the NMC Texture pack. It is the single pack I wanted the most from the beginning, and as it is a 5 download process with apparently no FOmod support, I might be out of luck. Definitely need help on this.

Overall, I am happy things are working slightly, even if I am experiencing freezing, and may have fucked up the ini text file. I am still trying to get everything functional.

You should go to the forums like I said earlier, and get help finding a good tutorial. You need to learn the basics about folder structure, .esp files, load order, archive invalidation etc, or you'll be stumbling around in the dark not knowing what you're doing wrong. Installing a texture pack manually, for example, should be a very easy process. Also, remember to always read the readme!

Alright, will do. Thanks for the input.

Quick thing though, would it be wise to get rid of everything existing in FOMM right now? I am fine going to the forum to learn about modding, however It would be nice if at the very least, I could fix base Fallouts freezing issue.

I should probably ask them, now that I think about it. ;/

You should probably remove all mods to start with. Actually, re-install the game and make sure the vanilla (no mods) version is working before you do anything. The best way to go about modding Beth games is

1) Do a clean install of the game without mods

2) check that it works

3) install one mod (read the readme first!)

4) check that it works like it should

5) install another mod

6) check that it works like it should

etc... that way, when something breaks, you will always know why.

And the things you need to know about

- File types: .esp, .esm, .bsa, data files (textures, menus, music, meshes) etc.

- Folder structure: what goes where?

- Archive invalidation: how to make texture mods work

- Load order: the basics, although BOSS will do it for you

Learning to mod Beth games is a bit of a process, but if you like learning, it can also be fun :) When you understand the basics, installing mods should be no problem for you.

lol I thought I was the only one that had fun modding and learning how to mod. High five, buddy!

I love modding, or I wouldn't have written the Oblivion modding guide that's linked in the OP :) I've been modding Beth games since I fell in love with Morrowind, and never looked back.

Did this, still experiencing freezing. I am going to the Bethesda forums.

This is becoming unbearable. Been trying to just get Fallout 3 to work with nothing installed for what feels like days now.

Got all my mods working,

has anyone had any experience with rh iron sights? The read me makes no sense. Installing by fomod or by folder, regardless of merging fallouts data results in a crash, and if I only use the data merging feature, certain weapons do not line up, namely the hunting rifle.
