Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

Looking for some pretty minimal mods. Essentially just a mod to update the graphics to the maximum potential and maybe a few gameplay enhancements(sprinting, animations, etc) I'd essentially like to stick as close to the core game as possible but remove some of the jank. Suggestions? I'd very much appreciate it.

If you're looking to remove jank/bugs without changing the core game you'll want to pick up Mission Mojave, at the very least. It's New Vegas' equivalent of an unofficial patch.

How do you get DarnUI and Project Nevada to work?

It says to install DarnUI then project Nevada, and I did that but the text scaling is all messed up

The OP is a good place to start, but I'll quote myself on a PM I sent another gaffer once he asked me for graphics stuff if you want a little more stuff. It's probably somewhat outdated and it doesn't include everything but it's the stuff I like. I will make a newer and more complete version of this, including images and non-graphic mods so GAF has a good, updated starting point, but I never find the time to do so.

Sorry for the length.

First, weather mods.
You'll want to install Nevada Skies. It comes in two versions, UWRLfied and Vanilla. UWRLfied gives a more stylized with higher contrast and saturation, while Vanilla is more akin to the original game. Testing them is easy so you can choose for yourself, but my vote goes to the Vanilla version. To me UWRLfied looks like you're playing Borderlands on LSD or something.

There's also Fellout but I found it doesn't support the DLCs as well and it looks very weird in contrast with the main game. Also, Nevada Skies has some awesome things like sandstorms, so you're gonna like that.

Here's a comparison shot if you don't wanna try yourself: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/images/35998-1-1299184887.jpg

UI
This is probably the most important mod you can install to New Vegas: MTUI. Enhances your UI so it look like you're seeing it through a magnifier glass.

Another option is DarnifiedUI, but I don't like it as much. It has another font that makes the UI look too sci-fi for my taste.

You will probably want to install Immersive HUD as well and it blends well with MTUI (not so sure about DarnifiedUI).

Faces
Only one needed, New Vegas Redesigned 2. Comes in two flavours: Lore and Recommended. I've used his Recommended version for a long time and it's pretty lore friendly. The guy's got tons of pictures on the link, so you can check both out and see for yourself. It's the same files with different .esps, so it's easy to try it yourself, too.

New Vegas Redesigned 2: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=39218

Restoration stuff
NVRestoration and NVFRestoration are there to make New Vegas look like the sprawling city of vice it should be. Must-haves for me, and really help the game come closer to what it's supposed to be.

NVFR: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=42808

The NPC Project line of mods is made by a really awesome guy and basically restores a lot of cut content and makes varied areas feel more alive and crowded.

Textures
Weapon Retexture Project is my favorite weapons retexture mod. It's normal guns only, though, but it's amazing work. I always install this.

WRP: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=38285

Better Blood Textures if you're into that sort of thing :P

Better Blood: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=34917

I don't really vouch for all of these because I think that while they're higher res, they totally ruin the look and style balance of the game, but people seem to like them:

Book of Water or something like that is better resolutions for armor, enemies, etc.
Book of Water: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=39873

NMC & OJO Bueno are "competing" mods for world and clutter items retextures. I think NMC is better, but I prefer the default textuers. They both took too many liberties for my taste. Things like what wood's a sign made of is important for the lore of a world and they usually don't pay any respect to it.
NMC: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=43135
OJO BUENO: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=39755
POCO BUENO (lower res OJO BUENO): http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=42028

Animation
Weapon Animation Replacers is the only animations mod I use and it's pretty great. It basically adds sensible idle and running animations for most guns so your guy doesn't look like he's on edge all the time, pointing his gun at whoever's in front of him. It's even got many variations to choose from.

Weapon Animation Replacers: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=38527

This other mod looks pretty decent too:

New Vegas Proper Re-Animated http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=41333

Special effects, shaders, etc.
FNV Enhanced Shaders is there if you want ambient occlusion, depth of field, etc. The ambient occlusion's pretty decent, but I never found a depth of field mod I liked. SSAO has a heavy performance impact, so beware. It's pretty easy to test too, so install it, see how it runs, try the lite version, etc.

FNV Enhanced Shaders: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=34868

Essential Visual Enhancements pretties up the sparks, explosions, lazers and other special effects of the game. I think it also enhances gore.

EVE: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=42666

etc
This tiny mod adds more grass to the world with a low performance impact. I love how it looks.

More Grass: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=35756

Electro-City counters the super dark nights of Nevada Skies and Fellout by placing a lot of new lightposts. It makes the game look pretty great at night and it's overall pretty fun. You'll need some compatibility patches to make it work with NVR and stuff, but don't worry, it's all detailed at NVR or NPC Project's mods pages.

I think Western Skies looks better, also DarnUI is better.

I don't give a flying fuck if it's lore friendly or not, as long as it looks better and not like it's from 1995 in texture quality.

Well that's why I link to them even if I don't use them.

So...like...how can I be sure the mods are working correctly and it's not just the pc looking better than the console.
Not that I know of, usually unless it's a very subtle thing you should notice easily.

Did you remember to edit the ini file?

So I just bought the game but not the complete version (silly me), are any of the add-ons worth the extra money?
What I'm mostly interested in are the perks, weapons and armor from the add-ons are there any good mods that add this kind of stuff?

Edit: Hahaha I think of my mods is causing a glitch. Whenever I leave a conversation with Trudy she starts throwing up xD.

Yes, very much worth your money (except maybe Courier's Stash, but if you want weapons and armor then yup too).

Yup, just got Fallout 3 and I want to mod a few things. What are the best world texture mods (saw the weapon texture mod above), lighting mods, anything to get rid of the filter mod, and are there any non-wacky custom weapons or armor I might like? And I saw someone mention a mod to get rid of GFWL which I assume is useless in the Fallout games. That would be pretty awesome if I could get rid of it.

Where do I get these mods? I know Fallout 3 and NV arent steam workshop compatible so I guess I have to out into the wilds of the internet for them?

Also, from what I remember from modding Oblivion, I'm going to need some type of 3rd party program for activating mods right?

Edit: I did see some mentions in the OP but it is slightly dated and I'm not sure that the links are up to date for mods and FOMM. Thought I should probably ask here.

Re-installed New Vegas after reading zkylon's mod recommendations (thank you, sir). I must have spent a good few hours figuring out how to get things up and running. Thought I was out of luck for a moment there because of complications with ArchiveInvalidated, but then found a file that I must have backed up the last time I tried doing this that did the trick.

By the time I'd finished downloading, installing and configuring the mods, it was well past my regular bed time. I managed to create a character and run around the starting area. Looking forward to going through the game again as I've only beaten it once (non-hardcore) and have yet to try out the DLC (only Dead Money & Honest Hearts, won't get the other two until they're ~$1 apiece).

Some early feedback on the mods I'm using:

FNV Shaders
I believe I was running the "light" version before, and I couldn't tell the difference, so I tried the full "Delta F" version this time around, which looks noticeably better. Highly recommended.

Nevada Skies
Running vanilla and loving it. More subdued, realistic hue to the skies. Highly recommended.

Weapon Animation Replacers
This is a must-have for me. I absolutely loathed the default, gun-in-everyone's-face stance. This mod offers several idle animation choices for both rifles and pistols in both first and third-person perspective. As someone who switches between 3rd and 1st person perspective often, this makes a world of a difference for immersion even though it's a really minor touch. My character no longer looks as though she's ready to shoot anything on sight.

I downloaded Fallout Redesigned but couldn't get around the ArchiveInvalidated stuff, so I moved onto other mods. By the time I'd realized I had a working ArchiveInvalidated patcher, I had already installed body and face mods, so now I'm afraid to install it due to possible compatibility issues. I really like the work he's done, however, so maybe I'll risk it.

When I play New Vegas, for the first time, in a few days, I'll be using those mods.

Why would you do that if it's your first time? Play vanilla first.

P.S. : Mission Mojave changes a shitton of things that are not bugs and edits enough records that I'm personally very wary of using it. I mean, they seriously think that having "female" Y-17 trauma override harnesses is a bug. What.

Well, because Vanilla is terrible looking compared to what the graphic mods can do? I understand not using the gameplay changing mods, but NV looks much better with some tweaking.

@I H8 Memes, FOMM already has Archive Invalidation built in. Go to tools, click on "Archive Invalidation." They'll be check. Done.

Because I seldom play these type of games twice. I want the optimal experience the first time through.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of genres do you play more than once (if any)? Other than strategy games, RPG's - especially open-world ones - are by far my favorite games to replay.

Isn't the bug you're talking about just the fact that they take bonus damage from female-specific perks when they don't really have a gender? That does seem like a bug.

My free time is becoming increasingly limited. I only have a month to indulge in my hobby of recreational reading and gaming before I lose my free time again. So, I only play through a game once nowadays, so I have time to play other games.

When I was younger, I would usually replay RPGs (I played Xenosaga I/III so many times).

Nope, the bug is that they are *trained soldiers* therefore there can't be girls among them! (Hint: even assuming that the army in Fallout only enlisted male people, there were researchers and engineers among them too. Besides, *changes* like that are scope creep, and for what proposes to be an unofficial bug fix patch, in bad form.) Quote:
Y-17 trauma override harness are now affected by emp projectiles due to the nature of their suits. They are full of electronics after all.
Y-17 trauma override harness were set female in vanilla despite them being trained soldiers. Set all of them to male.

There's also stuff like integrating GRA without specifying how in the changelog (there are other mods that do that too, so it's likely to cause a conflict), etc. Not that it's all bad, the map fixes and the invisible walls removal is very cool, but I preferred it when it was a separate mod.

While I did prefer New Vegas unmodded for most of my first playthrough, most of the mods I listed are somewhat subtle and won't change the game's "feeling" or lore, so people should be safe to use them on their first playthrough (I do suggest trying the game Vanilla first and actually testing which mods they like). I do mind the stuff WorstUsernameEver posted, so I wouldn't link to a mod If I knew it contradicted the original lore for no good reason.

Also, if anyone's ever scared of screwing up their game, saving yourself a lot of pain is as easy as making a backup of the game's data folder. If you're using FOMM or NMM you probably won't need to, but it's still good practice.

Well, I don't know if that is a joke or just stupidity, but they shouldn't be set to a gender at all. There is a bug there one way or another.

I am trying to mod both F3 and NV..I only done the slow exp one before but now since I have a nice desktop I wanna try high res textures and stuff.
Most mods that require NVSE usually state it in its installation instructions/readme/etc.

Safest thing to do is just to install NVSE (http://nvse.silverlock.org/) and add a Steam link to the NVSE exe or to NMM/FOMM, and not even bother checking :P Achievements and time tracking will still work.

Wow thanks for this. Gonna dive into this game again once I get home.

It essentially works the same as Sawyer's mod, where the new GRA mods are supported by the base weapons rather than the GRA version duplicates. And the duplicates are removed from the relevant weapon lists.

I can't remember why the GRA DLC created a duplicate of the old weapon versions for all the new weapon mods, I think it had something to do with how they were allowed to setup DLC. He answered a question about it on his Formspring once.

Guys, I need some help.

I transferred my New Vegas x360 save over to my PC and loaded it up. Now the game loads fine but when I try to fast travel the game crashes to the dektop. How do I work out what's causing this and how do I fix it? I want to start modding the game but this is obviously a stumbling block.

I'm in the Old World Blues DLC area.

Cheers.

I'm planning on transferring my save like you. I hope this doesn't happen to me.

Re-installed Fallout 3 and all DLC last night, because I've always wanted to try Wanderers Edition. Using all WE defaults for hardcore game play, no pipboy fast travel (left the motorcycle and caravans on), and chose the 'alternate' start to choose a profession. I picked "Politician" and was plopped in front of Big Town with only a business suit and a butcher knife. When I finally scrounged up a gun, I thought I would tackle the raiders in the elementary school...yeah, that didn't go over well at level 3! LOVE IT. Love the challenge.

I know I'm LTTP on this mod, but from what little I've played will make this run through the Wasteland a fresh experience.

If I were to pick one, which one would be best for modding? FO3 or FONV?

Also, I've never really messed with mods before, do people usually play a vanilla round once first and THEN do mods?
