Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

I must ask, what does Type 3 refer to?
Type 3 is just the name of a popular body mod for FO3, then ported to NV. There's a lot of versions of Type 3, like Beware of Girl and Dimonized, with different boob sizes and all.

No idea what Type 3 actually means, though. There's also a Type 6 for New Vegas as far as I know, so I guess the number means something, but what Type X means beats me. I didn't recommend Type 6 because it's too sexed up for it be lore friendly.

Ok guys just about to start Fallout New Vegas and was wondering if there were any mods that you would consider essential or highly recommended for a first time playthrough.

I don't want anything that drastically changes the gameplay experience obviously, but things that just make things plain better regardless would be welcome.

Thanks.

I'm on my first playthrough as well (about 40 hours in), but these are the mods I can't play without now:
FOOK and Project Nevada are good re-balance mods. I highly recommend them.
A lot of the settings are highly configurable with Project Nevada (I can't recall about FOOK) too.

Then I really like Nevada Skies. It makes the sky and light look so much nicer, and it makes exploring the wasteland more fun and creepy at night (nights are very dark). Another neat visual mod is Electro-City Imaginator, which allows you to tweak the color values. It can, with the right settings, make the game look leagues ahead of vanilla.

Finally I'd recommend A World of Pain, as it includes more dungeons and fleshes out the wasteland. I installed it so early on though so I don't know what's vanilla and what's AWoP.

I think I'd prefer to stay away from things like that, I want to be able to know what's vanilla and what's not so mod's that rebalance and change the game much are pretty much a no go.

I have got:

Detailed Normals
EVE
Interior Lighting Overhaul
and MTUI

I think I'll stick with that for now tbh.

Thanks for the recommendations though, I'll check them out later maybe :)

Just get the core module of Project Nevada. Grenade hotkey and sprint really adds to it imo. Also the texture packs might be up your alley.

Thanks, I just had a go, and god does the game look ugly after having played Skyrim.

I know it's old but damn, those texture packs will hopefully not destroy my system lol.

I've gone back to vanilla textures now. There are too many places in the DLC, particularly Lonesome Road, where you'll see a low-res texture directly beside a 4096x4096 one and it's far too jarring for me.

Well Project Nevada is like four different individual modules, and you can reconfigure iirc everything it changes. The hotkeys are really great too. I forgot about sprinting, but it's a real godsend.

Just to be clear I don't think A World of Pain removes anything or changes any of the games settings. It just adds new areas.

I'm not at all trying to be pushy, I just don't want to discourage you from using the mods because I explained them poorly.

You should NEVER use AWOP for your first run of the game. It adds high-level items to earlier areas which completely break the combat balance of the main game.

really? I haven't been that lucky. I've seen some good weapons but nothing overly powerful for where I'm at and ammo is pretty scarce. Suffice to say the game is still a challenge for me.

Does the Wasteland Flora Overhaul come with a big performance hit?

A few mods you haven't mentioned I couldn't live without:

Project Nevada (I install all the modules but the cyber enhancements): for balance and new stuff
Nevada Skies (NOT the UWRLfied version): greatly enhances the look of the game and makes night darker, which is pretty cool.
New Vegas Redesigned: this fixes a ton of the atrocious faces Obs came up with in a lore friendly fashion. It's not on the nexus anymore but that link still works
FOOK: for bug fixes
The NPC Project mods: they add a lot of immersion by adding cut random characters and rubble and other stuff. They're great and the guy behind them works like crazy on his mods.
New Vegas & Freeside Restoration: I think the Freeside mod might clash with the NPC Project but they basically make New Vegas the oasis in the desert it's supposed to be. Really helps marry the idea in Obsidian's design with the final implementation in the game.
WRP: hi res retexture for most firearms in the game. Looks great and isn't such a big hit on performance.

I just started using Fertile Wasteland (no noticeable fps hit) and I like it. My saved game was around that Cottoncove lake area, which looks nice with the foliage. I sort of expected it to be more extreme, like that one vault, but it just bears a fitting flora. Nothing extreme so far.

Does Redesigned play nicely with Project Nevada, AWOP, and FOOK? I'd like to try it but I don't want to deal with a lot of conflicts.

I went Dead Wastleland in that Flora mod. Also how do i get Nevada Skys set up? I got it installed and it works but i'm not sure what settings i should be chosing. I thought it would of done it all for me.

I'm 95% sure it'll do fine with those three but I haven't used AWoP recently but I don't think AWoP changes any of the NPCs already in the game.

Crashing at start up with FNV Enhanced Shaders every time. Doesn't matter what version I use. Been looking around but I can't find any solid leads on the problem. Anyone have any experience with this?

I haven't encountered that myself, but are you using anti-aliasing? I know that some cards need to have the additional anti-aliasing compatibility ESP enabled to work correctly with ES, specifically for motion-blur and DOF.

Being playing some modded New Vegas

My main objective was to make the game look better while putting some key features in the game that was missing that was in Fallout 3 (Perks at every level) and some stuff from Skyrim (like Sprint). I didn't want to drastically change the core gameplay.

Heres the mods i'm using

Only using Project Nevada Core and Equipment.
Dead Flora in the Flora mod

Now why would you go and do that to yourself, huh?

Anyways, I'd suggest you also install Project Nevada Rebalance. It doesn't make the game a whole lot harder, just a more interesting and dynamic because it's a lot more hoard-unfriendly. I'm betting you don't want that, but well, I can't help recommending it to everybody.

Still no way for an uncsensored steam version / blood patch for the german version? :(
I googled a whole bunch last time people asked and I couldn't find anything, and I can't find anything quick and simple now either. Try this forum: http://www.bloodpatches.net/forum/blutpatches-32/41166-fallout-new-vegas-uncutpatch.html. I can't speak a word of german but I've noticed a guy saying "danke für den patch, funktioniert wunderbar!" which I guess means "thank you for the patch, it works wonderfully!", so there's probably something there, but I just haven't got the time to browse 40 pages for it atm.

edit: by the way, googling blood patches linked me to a lot of shady sites, but some of they might have a working patch. I just don't know how legal any of those are...

Yeah, so the bloodpatch works but it changes the .exe and I u sed a modified exe to get rid of mircostutter...and now microstutter is back in full force. :(

Why not? lol
I feel it's much more gratifying for perks to be a sort of big reward you get every few levels rather than just a regular skill boost positive feedback thing. It was like that in the older games, with you getting a perk every 3 levels (4, even, if you had a certain trait) and it worked a lot better. A lot more excitement when you leveled up and a lot more meaningful choices.

Have you tried using this instead: New Vegas Stutter Remover? It's just a dll.

I need both to get rid of all stutter...game sucks...kinda. :(

So I just installed Project Reality on Fallout 3. You can enable mods through your pip boy...where is the option to do this?

I don't use the mod, but I assume that it adds configuration screens to the Mod Configuration menu which doesn't exist for Fallout 3 because it needs New Vegas specific NVSE modifications.

Is there a mod for NV that hides hats and helmets? There are heaps for Skyrim and Oblvion but none for Fallout.

Basically i want the stats of a hat but not be able to see it. It looks particularity ugly at the moment with a custom hair texture. There is only one i found that disables hats for NPCs, but none for your character.

Should I download NMC large or medium texture pack? Is the difference worth the performance hit? GTX570@AMD Phenom X4 965 3,4Ghz

And do you level up too quickly in NV as well? Any mods that slow down the level ups? I don't want to hit maximum level before finishing the game.

Use Project Nevada - Rebalance to lower the exp rates.

As per the Mod's description, unless you have multiple GTX 570's in a SLI configuration, I would stick with the medium or small. I use the small pack and it looks fantastic with a minimal performance impact on my ATI 5850. If you are playing in 1080p, I think that the medium and small should do the job well without destroying your performance.

Is there currently a fix for Fallout 3 on Windows 8 64 bit? It crashes past the launcher for me, and I want to keep using Windows 8 as my main.

Is there a way

j/k didn't want to combo break the topic.

But is there a complete tutorial on how to backup Steam files and how to mod? I'm only 5-10 hours in the game but I wouldn't want to start over by now.

Thanks :D

PS: already tried with google obv but didn't find anything in 10 minutes. Tomorrow I'll search carefully, if some of you have a link please share :D

You don't even really need a tutorial. Your saves are located under My Documents/My Games/Fallout 3. There are your save files at least.

To mod, just go fallout3.nexusmods.com and download the Mod Manager. To get a decent idea of mods, look at the first page.

Backing up your files via Steam will backup all the game files if I'm not mistaken, and that isn't that useful when you are backing up gigs of data, instead of just the important stuff.

Yeah I just found the option on Steam, thanks :D
I'll backup saves too on their own, just in case.
And I forgot, I'm playing NV.. I'll search for the mod manager. Anyway I'll keep the modding low, the game is already running ridicolously lo-fi on my pc :\

There's a lot of mods out there that help you run the game on a lower end PC. Fallout 3 barely ran at 720p on my Vaio F12, but with one performance boost mod, I was able to play on high textures at 1080p. Don't ask me how there was a huge bump like that, it sorta blew my mind.

All the texture did was just remove some unneccessary textures on the ground, or something like that. Here is the site for New Vegas mods. Just search performance and you'll find your way :D

I just recently threw a few mods into my new vegas installation, and found a nice video series on youtube detailing how to use the fallout mod manager. Nevada skies required me to use the package manager feature of the mod manager, which I wasn't familiar with.

In total I have the following addons:

MTUI - essential. This makes the text smaller, allows more menu items on screen, etc.

Nevada skies - ok, but it looks really colourful, almost cartooney outside sometimes. I didn't mind the faded 50s tv show look in the first place. Darker nights are awesome, though.

Electro city - very nice. It adds a whole bunch of lights around the place which makes the darker nights from nevada skies even more impressive. I enabled the street lights as well, so it's easier to get around outside at night, but you still get a great sense of going off into the dangerous dark areas away from the main road.

Flashlight - thought this might be cool for going off the main road at night, but it's terrible. I ended up switching this off and just dealing with the darkness.

DK bullet time - Incredible. It uses up your vats points to give you max payne style slow motion. If using vats is not for you, this is an excellent alternative way to play. Love it.

Woah thanks :O
Finally I don't feel one of the uncool kids with my Nvidia G210.

No actually I still do.
But thanks anyway, got a huge boost!

Your problem with Nevada Skies is that you're likely using the UWRLified version. I hate that one, it looks hideous. Try using the "lore" version (called in the download page NSkies 0-7-1 - Vanilla Edition), it's much much better.

The three important mods you're missing are Project Nevada (which, amongst many other things, has bullet time covered, but also sprinting, loot rebalancing, new guns and implants, etc.), New Vegas Redesigned (fixes a lot of the hideous faces Obs threw up in the game) and New Vegas Restored (makes the city of New Vegas more stunning and more akin to what I imagine Obs wanted but couldn't implement when scaling down to consoles/low-end PCs).

Project Nevada: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=40040
New Vegas Restoration: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=35100
Freeside Restoration: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=42808
New Vegas Redesigned: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=39218

All of those are lore friendly and will bring you much happiness.

edit: watch the NVR and NVFR mods because you need to install compatibility patches with Electro City. They're still worth it.

I just installed Fallout NV ultimate edition PC and really want to add some mods, specifically those that add graphic enhancements, like Nevada Skies and anything that will improve NPC faces, looks etc. lighting enhancements also. I'm not as interested in game alterations but wouldn't mind that.

I am a little overwhelmed with the options and this thread. I read an article about best mods and the listed the NVAMP (I think) as an all inclusive mod but reading install instructions has me all perplexed :)

If someone doesn't mind PMing me who is well versed in NV mods, please I really want the assistance.

Thanks!!
