great vid.
too bad the ad that they're gonna use to promote windows 8 will be complete ass.
According to AMD, the AMD HD3000/4000 lines have drivers bundled with Windows 8 that will be used from now on.

Now, unfortunately that means we're at god-knows-who's mercy for begging for updates that fix problems with games. I know Disciples 3 is unplayable with graphical garbage. It's a bad acid trip.

My next computer will definitely be in the vein of this one

Similar to the Transformer Tab, but packing an Ivy Bridge (Hopefully i5 at the least), 4GB RAM, and the Intel 4000HD chip.
OH GOD I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE.

So I opened the video app and it tells me my account is in the wrong region.

I try to change it (through the Xbox site) and I can't find the option. Am I screwed?

Probably a dumb question, but I couldn't get this running with UNetbootin, could I?

It should work. Just like with the Windows 7 DVD/USB download tool.
(do a search on 'windows 8 install from usb'; there are various guides)

For me those tools didn't work, though. In that case you have to format the stick using the command line. I can't find the article I used, but this one might do how to prepare usb stick with diskpart

I'm in the same situation. When I created my account Live wasn't available in Poland, so in order to play mp games I had to register on some other country. Unfortunately, Live system is fucked up and once you set the region you can't change it. (well, apparently when they made Live available in Poland and few other countries two years ago you could change the region to one of those countries; but that option isn't available anymore).

Right now all you can do is either create a new account with proper region, or simply change the region in Windows settings (Control Panel -> Region -> Location -> Home Location) so it matches the one you have set up on your Live account.

thats perfect. i wonder how much this kind of stuff will be

The new twitter app in the store, Rowi, seems pretty swell - aside from these promoted tweets being right in your face.

Try and change it from here:

Didn't work sadly.

Thanks though.

What a load of bullshit.

Fuck the video app.

How well would this run league or Dota2?

So I'm using Windows 8 Consumer since my desktop BSOD whenever I try and boot up with windows 7. If I install the Review will it just wipe everything and start anew?

More or less, yes. It will move User, Windows, Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders to Windows.old folder (other folders on C: will be left untouched), so you will have access to files from those folders even after the fresh install. You will be able to delete the content of Windows.old folder through Disk Cleanup tool.

Thanks. Might as well experience the new stuff then, I think the only thing I really care about is Dialo anyways.

After using Win 8 for a while, there are a few things that could be done to make it a lot better - most of these aesthetic changes.

- Pinned apps to the multi-tasking charm - like chrome does, shrink the thumbnails/keep em running/allow to start at boot. It is the task bar 2.0, after all. I'll always have mail/outlook, and a tweet app running.

- rotating BGs on the start page, at the least - like the 360's Bing page

-The big empty white BG on the store page is still ugly as hell. It makes the whole thing look a lot more elementary than it is. Fix that, somehow.

- In the RP, the scroll bar now fits the Metro aesthetic, but it's still way too much of a brick and dated looking when being used in the apps. Putting that thing on a diet (or getting rid of it completely) would go a long way, me thinks. You can scroll with either a scroll wheel, or touchpad, I don't need to see it.

---

Overall, though, Win 8's come a long way since the dev preview, and I mean one long ass way.

How do I show the tab bar in metro IE?

I really like the little pop up that shows up when you lower/raise the volume and have music playing, letting you pause/forward/reverse. The music app itself blows pretty hard though.

I decided today that I will stick with my current pc which is now showing age until win8 is finally out, then i'll go with a pc/tablet hybrid so I can keep doing pc things and tablet things, best of both.

I would try this beta out but man I still love windows 7 so much, it's never put me wrong.

I really hope there is at least an option to change that in RTM. Not having it search through everything without clicking on settings or files is really annoying.

Okay, I gotta repost this. Is this not happening to anyone else? If so, what would this even be an issue with? I have no idea where to start attempting to fix it.

You need drivers for your touchpad. Its not doing palm rejection when you are typing.

This is what I was asking for. This is EXACTLY what I wanna buy. Something like the Asus Transformer Prime, but x86 (as it says it'll be). I'm sold.

Any way I can load this on my Mac with bootcamp?

Just grab the iso and burn it to a disc if you're using something other than a macbook air -only those allow you to install straight from the iso. Three fucks for arbitrary restrictions. Anyway, that's what I did.

please for the love of god, don't release this system with ideapad yoga(sixteenhundredfuckingdollars) as the only convertible laptop.

i see windows 8 as a great idea if you have a laptop with touch and a convertible design so it doubles as a tablet. EVERY laptop need hinges and screens like that. every. it must be as standard as a usb port. for real. there is no reason not to have it. it will be the next level. the 2012 level and its right now.

cocktail flow and cooking video app is pretty awesome, these are the sort of easy free apps what makes the App store on IPhone so appealing.

Which one is this? I only see All Recipes and Fine Cooking. Neither have video as far as I can tell. It's possible that not all apps are visible in Canada.

Upgraded to the Release Preview and just go into it (I let it install while I went to my GFs and it was ready when I got home).

Uhhhh... new RC version of IE10 is ummm... fast? Like maybe faster than any other browser fast? I have dev chrome and aurora firefox installed as well. IE10 seems faster. I ran sunspider and provided MS didn't optimize just for the benchmark somehow I got sub 300 ms which is nuts with the desktop version and less than 10 ms over 300 on the Metro.

I swear IE 10 didn't feel near this good in the consumer preview. Not sure if it's just the latest updated IE10 from the consumer preview preinstalled here or if it's new or what, but damn.

I'm so shocked I think it might even be new topic worthy.

Neither Tweetro nor Rowi are ready for primetime. Tweetro doesn't even let you do something as basic as reply, and Rowi puts ads at the top of your timeline - not cool. I do like the potential they show, though. And the app store as a whole is really starting to come together.

The real fun will begin when the giants like Chrome, and Steam show up with metro versions.

Yeah, IE10 is incredibly fast. I don't use it because of all my bookmarks and other things tied to chrome, but I've been thinking about making it my main browser for a while.

IE10 still doesn't allow for a homepage and then there are no plugins which means no adblock. I'll stick to Chrome.

ie10 is really good especially with flash builtin and the tpl's to do basic adblocking.

the only thing its missing is lastpass for me.... having to remember all these passwords is very difficult once you get used to using lastpass for everything. they are supposedly working on something for metro but w/o plugins I am not too optimistic. really they should open up some kind of a plugin vetting system like the app store.... because things like flash and lastpass should be allowed in but let ms ensure they do not mess with performance or security.

also am curious what chrome/ff will end up looking like.... unless I misunderstand both of those will have to use the ie rendering engine for their metro apps. I am hopeful chrome will be able to figure a way to sync bookmarks, open tabs, etc to metro. that to me is the biggest flaw of IE in that it does not seem to be persistent with the cloud/skydrive.

The only strange little behavior that I have noticed is that sometimes my tabs disappear and I have to minimize to maximize to get it back. Besides that everything is impressive. Exceeded my expectations.

Metro on Windows 8 on x86 processors allows browsers to use their own engines. Windows RT on ARM processors does not allow other engines.

Does anyone know if Google will be able to bundle flash into Chrome for Metro for x86 processors?

That's only for Metro apps provided directly from the store AFAIK (ie, apps compatible with Windows RT). The regular desktop apps can create a Metro interface (like IE10 - it's the same program, just with different interfaces for desktop and Metro) that allow them to use their own rendering engine in Metro.

So the initial dev preview as pretty snappy. I thought the consumer preview for me personally was a step back. The release preview though is step back towards the dev preview snappiness plus some. Just seems much faster and smoother overall compared to my consumer preview install I've been running with over the past few months.
