Windows 8 Release Preview

So, there's really no way to change the color of the messaging app? I don't like this pink/purple, at all.

Also, the sports app is pretty cool. I see myself using it quite a lot.

Yeah the sports app is pretty sweet. Selecting a favorite team and pinning them to the start screen is nice.

The same 8400 build is labeled as RC on the server versions. The release preview is release candidate, just like the consumer preview was the beta.

And yet we know it's not the final version because all apps are labeled as preview and they said final ui isn't there so things still have time to be added, like basic Skype integration.

Has anyone put it on two machines? For some reason I can't install apps on my desktop that I previously installed on my laptop (or any app for that matter)?

Found out how to fix it. Had to go to the account settings in the store and update my method of payment. Not sure why this wasn't an issue on my laptop?

I'm still using XP and plan to build a new PC around the time 8 launches. Will I even know how to operate it? How different will it be? I guess it's good that the start button is back, though of course I had no idea it was gone from later Windows OS. Sounds horrible.

I thought zune music subscription was built in now? The Music App doesn't seem to tie into my zune at all.

Oops. Have to pull out the charms menu to search and stream songs. Still getting used to windows 8.

It is. I've been downloading / playing music just fine with my zunepass.

There's no start button. When you hover in the bottom left, you see a picture of the start screen, and clicking that takes you to the start screen. Win8 is different, and it probably won't take you more than an hour to learn all of the new gestures. In RTM, there will be a short tutorial to get started (not in the RP). It's Windows, so you will be very familiar with everything on the desktop. It's only the new start screen and charms that you'll have to learn.

It's not back, those were people trolling. The Start Menu is a replacement for the Start button. If you stay mostly in the desktop environment then the experience is almost the same as previous versions of windows.

It's really not as complex as some people are portraying it.

That's not what he means. Why can't I see all albums of one artist, like in the superior Zune software?

It's slow to get there and shows music I don't own, which is misleading.

I also noticed that it does not pull in background art when playing music for my local music anymore (but does for the streamed stuff)... I bet that will happen before the final version.

And its not slow to get there imo.... if the artist is on the home page its 2 clicks to get to their artist page or you can also search to get there.

Having zunepass makes the music app very awesome and better than the actual zune software imo because all the new stuff we have (play to xbox, the 1/4th screen view, the new homepage is more useful, etc).

I just hope this music app is a place holder for the new music service replacing Zune. In fact im calling it right now that it is cause its just shit. Also, where's my windows phone manager app the promised ... They should just stick to the zune layout, "metro-fy" it a bit and BAM!

As someone who uses Media Center with a TV tuner regularly I have lost interest in Windows 8 in anything other than a tablet. Stupid decision.

You can get it back for a fee, it's just not included with Windows 8 anymore. Their explanation was that it was due to licensing costs for DVD/BR etc.

EDIT - Here is the blog post talking about it. It will be included with some versions apparently.

But statistics showed ...!

:lol

Sorry, I agree with you. It's really stupid. You should switch to XBMC. That's what I did a while ago.

Enjoying the release preview so far and all of the apps are very nice. I have my Zune pass working through the Music app but what I can't work out is how to change the volume of the music app independently of the system volume. Is there something easy I'm overlooking? No Smart DJ either? :(

Just downloaded My History Digest. I really like the design of the app. Not a lot content yet, but still pretty cool.

I still dont understand why Microsoft is trying to block this. It's an Apple move that Apple wouldnt even make.

Why wouldn't legacy code and resources be removed? The start menu is no longer supported or used in any way whatsoever. Leaving the code there means increased footprint on the disk, and extra useless complexity in code that needs to be considered when making future changes.

I was going to complain about this to. If you go to the album category you should be able to order them by artist. Interface is still garbage though. Should have just ported Zune :/ I guess the list style menus of Zune would be less finger friendly though.

And yet the color picker dialog from 1992 remains.

You can see how the Xbox team had their fingers in this one. "Priority #1: SELL MORE SHIT TO THE IDIOTS. Priority #2: Everything else."

And yet the color picker dialog from 1992 remains.

It took over a decade to change the font menu. Seriously, such a bullshit statement.

well I've no idea how to get the mac pro trackpad to work. sigh. anyway, the music app: any way you can get it to look at a wireless harddrive folder? zune can but I've no idea how to get this to do it. I don't want to have to move bits of music across or use the 'open file' option each time...

put the folders in your music library.

says it's an 'unsupported library location'... adding it says: 'this network location cannot be included because it is not indexed'.
you sure you are adding a folder and not the "music library" on that network pc? You can't add libraries to libraries.

I just checked, and i can easily add folders from my other pc to my local library (its in a homegroup so maybe that has something to do with it).

I do have one complaint so far, and it's obviously a bug, but I'm curious if others are experiencing it because I've not seen anyone else mention it.

When I'm typing, sometimes the cursor will just jump to another spot on the/in the text box.

Happened twice typing this, extremely annoying.

it's not a networked pc, it's a wireless hard drive (if that makes any difference?)

  • Different SKU's
    [*]Media Center is gone
  • Aero is gone
  • More Metro Apps
  • Upgrade offer for Win 7 Users

Media Center is actually available through the release preview, though it's pretty buried. Here's what you need to do: http://www.winsupersite.com/article...e-preview-install-windows-media-center-143291

Basically, go to the start screen and type add features to windows 8. Say you have a key and input this: MBFBV-W3DP2-2MVKN-PJCQD-KKTF7. Voila, Media Center. Be careful when you do this, as the computer will restart without warning.

Visual proof from my PC:

Note how it says Windows 8 Release Preview with Media Center, too!

This will mimic the actual procedure, except you'll likely have to pay once Windows 8 goes live.

Still not totally feeling w8 on my laptop, but my laptop is an hp tm2t, and holy crap tablets are going to be awesome. I don't have snap or proper multitouch and its still fantastic. It wasn't very good on cp, but it works incredible on rp, they must've spent a ton of time in between on tablet response, its....wow.

Also, where are the Zune music videos on this build?

Pretty disspointing really after spending some time with it. Lots of the little things still bug me and seem like they are 'features' as opposed to things they havent fixed yet.

Its bleh on my tablet, and I see no reason to put it on my desktop...

Honestly, Android and ios dont have much to fear >.<

Definately wont be buying it.

I have to agree. I really like Windows 8 on a tablet. It makes much more sense than on a desktop. I'd definitely buy a good high res 4:3 Windows 8 tablet.

Let me guess, making that stupid smiley takes too long on the touchscreen keyboard.

The Release Preview didn't agree too well with my video editing software, so I went back to 7 for now. Really enjoyed using the CP for the last few months, I'm looking forward to seeing how the final release is.

Well I would detail the problems, but this thread is full of people who would tell me why they are not problems and why its better that way and jeeeeez >_>

k. formatted my hard drive and installed vista (actually went back to factory default) and then installed windows 8. works fine now. no crash.

Finely.

Music app sucks. Video app sucks.

Metro ie takes longer to load up the first time then just going into desktop and loading normal IE or firefox.

I have to press 'keyboard' for the keyboard to pop up on a tablet when I click on an input thing.

Often in desktop mode if I click on an input thingy on the bottom of the screen, the keyboard covers it, so I cant see what I am typing unless I move the keyboard.

There are still nearly no decent apps to try out at all. Most that I have tried have been dissapointing and pretty bad.

Colour scheme is just bad in desktop and metro.

Metro apps want you to scroll sideways instead of up down? Why? (news and its what microsoft prefers apparently)

WHen you go 'back' on metro ie its this screen cap that you have to wait a sec for the page to actually reload so you can interact.

Why does everything metro have to be a full page app? Why!?

Some of the most akward interactions with the desktop are still there on the touch screen... for no reason... its on a tablet but they have so many things that are 100000% only suited to the fine control of a mouse....

I could go on... but anyway, dont have a mule. Have a donkey or a horse. This is a hybrid, half between desktop and tablet, and in the end both suffer due to poor decisions and half assing at Microsoft.

All windows 8 has done is make me appreciate Android more, and windows 7 more...

Game over. Continue? No, I dont want to waste any more coins in this machine!

Not directly related to Windows 8 but it shows how much Microsoft cares about their services outside the US.

From the Windows Phonr OT:

Why aren't podcasts available outside the United States of America?

Official response: "The team here just decided it was not a high priority to enable/invest in at this time. Sorry."

Sorry guys, you aren't worth shit, even 2 years after the worldwide launch of Zune.

Music and video apps are unfinished. I recommend installing Zune.

My Metro IE loads in less than a second.

On my tablet the keyboard pops up whenever I click a text input field, it also moves the thing I'm typing into up so I don't have an issue with not seeing it. Maybe a driver issue?

Apps will come, this is a preview.

You can change your colour scheme.

Scrolling sideways is more natural, it's how you read things like books and newspapers. It doesn't make as much sense with a mouse wheel but it makes sense when using a tablet with a touch screen.

I don't have this problem with pages taking a second to become active when going back a page.

I could go on but it's not going to change your mind and I'm just one of those people telling you you're wrong apparently.

FWIW I have an Android tablet and it really doesn't hold a candle to how the Metro environment works on my Windows tablet.

I can really see why people have been telling you you're wrong, markot.

Music app sucks. Video app sucks.
I agree. Microsoft could've done much better here.

Metro ie takes longer to load up the first time then just going into desktop and loading normal IE or firefox.

Only barely, when you consider the time it takes to actually get to the desktop, and it loads instantly after the first launch. Besides, why would you be using the desktop browser on a touch screen, or vice versa?

I have to press 'keyboard' for the keyboard to pop up on a tablet when I click on an input thing.

Considering you said,
Its bleh on my tablet, and I see no reason to put it on my desktop...
I don't see why this why this would be a problem at all, since you're apparently using it on a tablet and both iOS and Android tablets function exactly the same way.

You know you can snap metro apps to the sides to downsize them, right?

Android has widgets, you can easily control things from the 'desktop' and have them run in the background, they provide more info... etc...

I use the desktop browser and Firefox because sometimes the metro one doesn't play nice with sites. Also plugins...etc...

I use the desktop... because you need to sometimes? To me its one of the highlights of win 8, buuuuuut, there are still so many things that are not touch friendly.

I don't know why my tablet does the screen shot thingy for going back in metro IE, but it does, maybe because its a slower processor? 1.... something mghz dual core amd thingy.

I mean the actual metro theme onscreen start thingy, all the different colors just make it look sloppy Mio, the tiles are huge, but they are all clashing colors, I like that in windows phone its generally one color theme, all blue tiles...etc...

Scrolling sideways... I can see the benefits for reading articles, buuut, for things like the app store and metro apps, to me I like the Google play store layout, sideways for pages and changing categories, up down for the list, to me it makes more sense.

Maybe it is the drivers, I'm pretty sure when I had windows 7 on this tablet the keyboard popped up whenever I clicked on an input thingy.

Also am I crazy or is there no way to quickly scroll down like a neogaf thread in metro ie?

.

What did you have on this thing before? Windows 8's desktop experience with touch is just as shitty as Windows 7's. You might be the first person I've seen to actually criticize the tablet experience with this thing. Most would agree that it's a pretty spectacular tablet OS

In all honesty, if you are using it on a desktop computer you will barely ever be in Metro. People are literally hysterical about this thing.
