Windows 8 Release Preview

I'm using it on a tablet, I've been using windows 8 since cp came out, that's when I got the tablet pretty much.

There are good things, I love side swiping, I like metro ie mostly, I like most metro interfaces, mail, settings, the whatsitsface when you swipe from the right. But its not perfect, I think there are some areas where their 'vision' gets in the way of usability.

Hey guys I am new to te thread. I was wondering, will windows 8 open up A better way to cobtrol htpcs? I am sure an app on an iPhone will be able to mimic metro perfectly.

it's hilarious to see people slamming markot because his opinion on some parts of the OS aren't positive. start button gripes are one thing, more than a few of his issues are real usability issues.

gaffer-"windows 8 x86 tablets are great because you have the touch metro experience but still have the ability to use the desktop. Wait, why are you in the desktop on a tablet?"

what tablet are you using markot?

I would assume the biggest advantage for HTPCs is that windows 8 requires less resources than 7, but as far as control I'm not really too sure.

Wait, why are you in the desktop on a tablet?"
Using the desktop on a tablet =/= using the desktop on a touch screen. Windows 8 is great because you can plug a mouse and keyboard into a tablet and use it as a traditional desktop device. Markot is complaining about desktop features when he's using touch input exclusively, when in reality the desktop was never intended to be used productively with a touchscreen.

This shit. I want to read about actual praises and criticisms, not some Microsoft circle jerk thread.

But its there, the desktop is there and you will have to use it some times.

Windows isnt killing backwards compatibility, its there, its a feature to me.

So why are so many 'windows' apps, so untouch friendly still? To me its just half assing, they can change windows explorer to be more touch friendly, but there are loads of things that still are not.

And its small things, making check boxes bigger, making icons bigger, making... well things bigger >.>!

For an instance, disk cleanup, its still got these tinyyy tick boxes in it, why not fix it? Why not make it bigger for tablets? A skin? Something?

Thats just a smalllll example, but the fact is, tablets wont have a 'no desktop' experience, for a full windows experience. It will be awhile after launch before most apps are even tablet friendly, ignoring that there wont be metro ones for awhile too.

These things arent also down toa choice between 'touch' and 'not touch' they can easily be made to be friendly for both.

And honestly, after the first day, I didnt really care about the start menu thing, to me its a non issue really. I dont think its a good idea personally, because they didnt 'get rid of it' they just made it a whole screen thats kinda useless on desktops... Instead of scrolling and small folders, we have replaced it with swiping and large icons... to me its just bad design that kind of sums up alot of the things I have problems with. (That they are trying to make a desktop and tablet os, and are harming the experience of both in the attempt)

Im pretty sure that isn't the case, otherwise they wouldn't have spent time adding the ribbon everywhere in the OS and improving the touch features windows 7 had in the desktop. I think a few of the listed complaints can be attributed to the first gen brazos processor in his tablet but stuff like the keyboard blocking a text box aren't supposed to happen

The primary issue with using the CP and RP with tablets right now is the small amount of metro apps...if you want to use a music app that doesn't suck or use browser plugins, you need to use the desktop. Can't blame him for that.

edit regarding your above post, I have to say disk cleanup boxes being too small on a touch screen is kind of nitpicking in my book. Isn't there a way to do it in the metro interface anyway?

They've been working on improving the desktop experience on a touch screen, but the desktop itself was never designed to be navigated by touch.

Also, markot, I can't think of anything that would require going into the desktop, not if you're using it exclusively on a tablet without a KB+M. Is there a Metro version of Windows Explorer yet?

Well, I've been mucking around with the RP for over a day now. Been on the Win 8 bandwagon since the new Metro interface for it was first revealed, but after using it a while I'm finding the experience very jarring, especially on my home PC where I want to stay in 'desktop' mode 99% of the time. There's some huge improvements since the CP but looks like the changes between RP and RTM will be minimal so... we'll see. I'll boot back into it when nvidia's 302 drivers come out. I'm definitely not giving up on it. It was hella fast, that's for sure.

It's a new platform and may need some time to mature before it reaches the level of suitability I'm comfortable with. Historically, I'm an early adopter, so I'll probably upgrade immediately when it's released and just deal with it until I get used to it.

Still having problems getting it to identify my blu-ray drive and a few of my hdds, while others work fine. I'm not understanding what the deal is there.

What I would like to see the Speed increases of Windows 8 applied without making me deal with a tablet interface at all, which I don't want. Can you do that with Windows 8?

I know Stardock put out some program that's supposed to bring the Start button back, I'd be ok with using some 3rd-party stuff to get there.

Also, I hope they deliver Zune pass to more devices, ios and android apps plzzz.

Also this release has blue screened my tablet like 4 times... never happened on cp...

Same here.

Looks great and runs beautifully. However, not everything works and it just feels a bit odd.

I'll probably pre order like I did with W7 since it was so cheap.

They are supposed to announce their new cross platform music service next week at E3.

Can't help to feel it'd be nice to have OS-wide media controls like Windows Phone does (or is this in there?). Having to open an app to skip a song or pause on a tablet might be annoying.

You can snap an app if your screen us big enough, also if you press volume a small control panel next to the volume indicator pops up to let you control the music app.

Oh okay, I guess I'll have to experiment some more. It doesn't help that I've been using Zune :P

It seems Start Screen search is still a fluffy drag.

I mean, you still have to press enter to search for files. lol

You search in the same way that you do in W7: press start and then type, it shows results instantly just like W7. The only problem is that MS thought it would be a good idea to segregate applications/settings/files.

You cannot search as you type for files.

If I know I'm looking for a file, I press Win+F to save my time, but that actually just makes me press more keys because after I type and have to press enter for the search results to appear. So I end up having to work as much as I had pressed just Win, typed and then changed the results with Win+F.

It's silly.

Metro still is all style and no substance.

No, when you search for apps the system keeps searching while you're typing.
When you search for files, you have to press Enter to initiate searching.

Also, I hate that the only thing you can do with files after the result list shows up is open the file. You can't e.g. simply open the file's location. :/

Heh, I saw the count dynamically updating and assumed it did. It would be redundant (at least to me, anyway) since you can search in explorer. It never made sense to search for files in the start menu so I never did.

Does anyone have an ATI graphic card with HDMI out to a 5.1 system?

I can't set the speaker configuration to 5.1 so XBMC doesn't play sound when whatever I'm playing has surround sound.

This was working in the CP :(

Looks like the OS is broken for me. Pretty much all of the metro apps don't load properly or at all. It hangs when I try to make a Microsoft account. I tried to do a refresh of the system. It helped at the start but then things quickly stopped working again. Apparently it has something to do with my University's network. I'm not sure how such a thing could render a system unusable.

They should've left hidden shortcuts (like they still left the ctrl+shift+enter for admin rights). We power users would use them and Facebook crowd would probably never touch them.

I'm holding it wrong, rite?

I really hope there's a setting or something to change the segregation of apps/settings/ files in the start screen in the release version, it's a real annoyance for me.

You can do this.

- Right-click the desktop and select Screen Resolution.
- Click "Make text or other items larger or smaller"
- Select 125% or 150%

This will make all the windows and control widgets bigger without changing your actual resolution. My tablet came with this set to 125% by default.

Why Microsoft why

I can understand why it's like that. It's easier for the system to index all executable files and search through them in real time than it is to index and search through all files (both their names and content) you have on your disc.

It's simply faster to press Win/Win+F and start typing to initiate the searching than it is to open a Windows Explorer window and start searching from there.

Maybe so, but even with shit tons of files/apps I never had a problem with the search being too slow in windows 7.

From reading the last page it seems like Windows 8 if fulfilling their destiny of being the next windows.

Congratulations.

I really hope there is at least an option to change that in RTM. Not having it search through everything without clicking on settings or files is really annoying.

I do have one complaint so far, and it's obviously a bug, but I'm curious if others are experiencing it because I've not seen anyone else mention it.

When I'm typing, sometimes the cursor will just jump to another spot on the/in the text box.

Happened twice typing this, extremely annoying
.

Okay, I gotta repost this. Is this not happening to anyone else? If so, what would this even be an issue with? I have no idea where to start attempting to fix it.

e: I just discovered that when you switch from Metro IE to another app, the YouTube video stops playing.

Are you fucking serious?

It's not a problem on a desktop PC, but it's a problem on a tablet with a battery.

And what about an option, a switch, to enable unified search?

Here is a new video on the Lenovo ideaPad Yoga. I still like it.

This video actually convinced me that this type of convertible works and is quite nice. The device looks robust while still being really thin. I like how it can work as a stand for the tablet. When the tablet is on a flat surface the keys don't get pressed. And it looks like the tablet can be comfortably held in a way that you don't press the keys.

So after a day of on and off use..

Good
+ The speed. Everything is so fast
+ The look. So sexy
+ The ribbon makes things so much faster

Bad
- Takes longer than the usual OS to get used to (I consider my self very computer literate)
- I feel slightly trapped in the metro start screen but this will probably wear off
- The app store sucks balls but that's to be expected right now

Apps are much improved, I could almost see me using Mail even. But "Sent from my Windows 8 computer" as a signature, are they serious?

That aside, big improvement from the CP.

And once again Radeon HD3200 is not supported. Fuck you AMD :(

According to AMD, the AMD HD3000/4000 lines have drivers bundled with Windows 8 that will be used from now on.

Now, unfortunately that means we're at god-knows-who's mercy for begging for updates that fix problems with games. I know Disciples 3 is unplayable with graphical garbage. It's a bad acid trip.

My next computer will definitely be in the vein of this one

Similar to the Transformer Tab, but packing an Ivy Bridge (Hopefully i5 at the least), 4GB RAM, and the Intel 4000HD chip.

also known as the Teso K116, and available here.

Hopefully they put out a ton of commercials like that showing off win8..... they really need to dump a ton of money to educate people how windows 8 will work before they ever go to the store looking for a new pc.

Also on a completely unrelated note.... anybody figure out how to add metadata for the video app. Looks like it uses the same system as zune (those .mbr files) but I haven't had any luck modifying them for my existing shows.
