They can use the Wii U Gamepad instead?
I hope so. I do not want multiplatform developers to go the easy route and only use the pro one.

So since it has a USB port, I'm guessing in time we'll be able to use the PRO controller on PC.
If it uses bluetooth that'll make it where you could use it wirelessly on PC.
The Wii used bluetooth for its remotes right? Would make sense for backwards compatibility I guess.
It looks better than the 360 controller, besides the AWFUL button placement. At least they aren't using offset analog sticks - something that I'll never understand.
Man, I didn't even notice the buttons were wrong.
Hopefully they notice and switch X/Y, A/B. Annoying if companies don't accept the standard. This doesn't differentiate your product, it just annoys the customer.

While I admit that it confuses me on occasion, Nintendo's layout is no more "wrong" than Sony using its particular set of symbols instead of the Xbox standard.

That's probably true and I should have stated that I was comparing PS3/360/Wii U multiplats.

Why not just make a stand alone version of the classic controller pro? Instead they copied the form factor of the 360 pad, and switched the buttons and 2nd stick placement.
The reason dual analog works on both the 360/dual shock is the ability to quickly move your thumb from the 2nd stick to a face button if needed. It's an easier/more natural movement then moving the opposite direction. The configuration Nintendo is using would only be ideal if they were planning on focusing on games that used the 2 sticks + shoulder/triggers exclusively. It just doesn't make sense and I hope they fix it before launch but this is very reminiscent of the NGC pad and the 2nd stick not being a proper analog stick

No offense to you specifically but where the hell did this sentiment that hardcore gamers are hesitant to upgrade come from? The 360 never had this problem and it was coming off of the mighty PS2.Ahh, i see.
But still dont most gamers own a PS3 and/or 360 right now.....would they really jump on to the WiiU wagon to play their for lack of a better term hardcore games.
I havent done any studies and have no real proof so you can stop here if you want.
But id think if i owned a PS3 or 360 id keep using it for the multiplats and hardcore games, then id use my WiiU for WiiU exclusives......while devs are getting experience becoming "pro" at developing for WiiU the Ps4 and Nextbox will be launched and once the PS4 and Nextbox are relased the definitive version of most games will be on one or the other.
DA fuck!?
Nintendo's setup IS the standard. I'm still pissed Microsoft didn't copy them when they designed the controller.
Sony did the smart thing back in the 90's and did not go with letters, and used shapes. Now it's impossible to be confused using their controller since no one else uses shapes.
There is no standard. A standard is something that is copied industry wide. All three companies do it differently. It's not the standard, it's Nintendo's standard.
I thought it was stupid for the controller to be B-A on the NES in the 80s. It's still stupid today.
Guess what type of game is hugely popular, the West fixates over, Nintendo wants more of the audience for and devs have had issues with porting.

Good work nintendo!
Making a last generation console focusing on the tablet and then giving players a traditional pad saying that the tablet will be futile and too heavy for long sessions is pure genius.
Last generation?
Why would the tablet controller be futile?
And who says its too heavy?
What the hell are you talking about?

I wonder if this controller will have L3 and R3? If not then that just makes the button placement even worse.
lol that they even have to do this. Have fun buying 2 controllers Wii U owners.

For Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford, the recently unveiled Wii U GamePad is "the best controller I've ever had from Nintendo".
Last night Nintendo held a pre-E3 press conference to unveil the final design of the Wii U GamePad. It now has two longer analogue sticks instead of the circle pads the prototype device featured last year at E3. The sticks can now be clicked down, too. The GamePad's buttons and handgrips have been moved around to make it more comfortable to use. There's a TV Control button that, when pressed, transfers the telly's image to the GamePad screen or vice versa. And the GamePad can also act as a television remote once the Wii U console is turned off.
The GamePad also has an NFC reader/writer that can decipher cards or figurines placed on the screen. There are gyroscopic and motion sensors, too. You can use the Wiimote, nunchuck and Balance Board with Wii U.
"When I play with the controller, I immediately realise that for the types of games I like to play and make, this is the best controller I've ever had from Nintendo," Pitchford, who is at E3 to show off Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines, told Gamasutra.
"For Aliens: Colonial Marines, it's really exciting to have that screen there because I can do things that are very unique to this universe. For instance, we have a motion tracker in this universe. Now our motion tracker can literally be in our hands and we can see and hear it - and scan the room in 360 degrees, since it's a motion device."
Meanwhile, Gearbox confirmed that Demiurge Studios, maker of cel-shaded side-scroller Shoot Many Robots, is creating the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines.
Demiurge has a history of helping some of the industry's biggest players. The company was responsible for the PC ports of Mass Effect and BioShock, contributed to Borderlands and worked on several titles in the Rock Band franchise.
Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford told Gamasutra roughly 80 per cent of the work on Colonial Marines is being done in-house at Gearbox.
Last month senior producer Brian Burleson told Eurogamer Section 8 maker TimeGate Studios and outsourcing specialist Shadows in Darkness were helping out.
Demiurge spent nine months on the prototype before being handed Wii U development duty.
The Nintendo way IS the standard =) First game pad with 4 face buttons:

Yes, the analog sticks click on both the Tablet and Pro controller.
If you play something that's not a shooter (I only play games that are not shooters), you will need the buttons way more than a second analog stick, which itself is just a camera stick then. So it's way more comfortable for every single game (despite Portal) that I'll ever play with a Wii U, if the buttons and the left stick are in the primary positions. I so hope Nintendo comes to its senses and at least releases a controller with the correct alignment. It's shitty for the Pad, too, but this one isn't formed in a way that the handles make it sucky to press the buttons. For years people have complained the left stick on the DS isn't in the "main position", that "it's awkward", it's not on your thumb's "natural resting place", and other such crap. All the while not saying a peep about the right analog stick on both controllers. Nintendo moves the right stick, the aiming stick, a stick you conceivably need more precision with, to the "main position"...but now the argument is that it should be in a 'secondary' position. Wut. I don't understand the problem some are having with this layout, all of a sudden mind you, the normal wiiu gamepad has always had the same layout. Guess some are just that resistive to anything they aren't used to.
How is Nintendo switching the position of the face buttons and right stick a standard-destroying BLUNDER OF THE CENTURY
And no motion sensing capabilities. How is Nintendo switching the position of the face buttons and right stick a standard-destroying BLUNDER OF THE CENTURY when the DualShock and 360 controller having the left stick and d-pad in different positions isn't?
Of course it does. It has all the same inputs as the GamePad, just without the screen.
