Final Fantasy real time tech demo - Luminous Studio [Up3: Survey/Screens/Video]

This is the best thing I've seen from Square Enix in a long time.

Blizzard levels of polish. Bravo.

Particles truly are the next-gens bloom.

Thank god. Bloom is all right in small quantities but we never got small quantities of the thing. Way overused and too strong most of the time.

Now particles however, as long as they look good, can make a scene look so much more alive and with depth. Though I guess there's always the risk that they'll just shove particles in our faces constantly. We'll see I guess.

This tech demo looks great and the best part is probably the fact it looks believable as it has some flaws, but not horrible flaws. Just realistic flaws.

Don't let your imagination run away with itself, they'd never be able to build a world that expansive

I do wonder though, if Square Enix made this game and everything you see there was the world map but at 1:1 scale, would people be satisfied? It'd be more like an open world city than a world map really

I would be, but would they? The Final Fantasy offerings are getting linear and FFXIII had the excuse of no town because HD towns are too hard. With this high quality graphics it will be even harder and will take more work.

I don't see it happening at all.

I'm surprised by the amount of interest this has generated. Personally, I just find it hard to get excited about what we already know... next generation will be pretty

SE has never let me down in the visuals department, so I'm sure the cutscenes in FFXV will be great (pre-rendered or real time) but I'm more curious if they can build a great game with these tools

I guess at the end of the day it boils down to two things, people are ready for next gen and people are ready for SE to reach past heights

The tech looks good, but I'm not very interested in the characters or world after watching that video.

Then again, I was not interested in Versus XIII's world after the first trailer. Maybe I just need to see something more...like gameplay.

Well just now (even in this generation) we start seeing more and more games having cloth physics, since i'm a sucker for cloth physics, i can't wait for complete cloth simulation, next gen.
Even stuff like big Ninja pants would look incredible with it. :o

I'd love to know what that was running on. I hope they release whatever this turns in to for PC.
Well, "high-end off-the-shelf" hardware doesn't really leave a lot of room for interpretation. I'd guess an i7 and a 680 (or maybe 2).

I very much agree with them releasing it on PC. I wrote as much in the survey in case anyone reads it :P

I completely agree. CLoth/hair physics fuck yeah!

Also, with the right tools this is one of the many things that can actually decrease asset creation costs, since pre-baking those (either manually or tool-assisted) is quite some effort.

That's why I'm not really happy with my PS360 anymore. This is where we should be by now.

Great showing, I love tech demos like this. The best thing to come out of this wretched E3 are the glimpses of next generation technology and games.

My half awake brain couldn't fully comprehend the overwhelming amount of activity in the trailer with the first run. Now that I have seen it a few more times, I have to say that I am very impressed.

I love female protagonists who look like they can take care of themselves. Plus, the character design is far from the usual androgynous ideology infused as a FF tradition.

Now, in that survey I did mention that this new found graphical fidelity shouldn't push FF to cut down on creativity and push FF further into the realm of linearity (ref: FFXIII). Let's see what happens with this grittier rendition of a FF.

Also, I love the name Agni. I hope she can live up to her fiery name.

This looks amazing!
As a 3d artist myself the realtime connection with their engine and Maya, instantly updating the engine with changes you do in maya is simply crazy.

So, are they licensing this tech or what? If this really just an advertisement for employee openings, showing it behind close doors seems like a poor way to get the word out.

Still, SE over-hauling their internal development process sounds promising. I don't think we'll see another "Versus XIII" fiasco from them.

This looks absolutely fantastic, technically and conceptually. Hopefully by the time something in this vein gets turned into a proper project SE's management will have changed into something that can realize a huge game without so many development hurdles.

I think this is the best thing I've ever seen, like ever graphically. The technical proficiency coupled with art design...just..absolutely truly next-gen. Blows away Watch Dogs or Star Wars 1313 style-wise at least.

I must be missing something then, because the clearly indicated crazy guy gave something to the masked magician who became a cute female protagonist. I loved the first half, but after that it lost me.
It's still has a somewhat exotic Japanese feel to it so I guess it's not for everyone, but that guy didn't even babble that much nonsense and the girl didn't start to talk about how important friendship is etc.

That's great improvement to me.

If you go through their careers page you'll also see they're searching for procedural programmers for their tools/R&D so it actually brings back not just towns but whole cities into the scope of what we'll potentially see.

Here is the actual presentation, you can see them manipulating it in real time, very impressive

He also discusses various ways in which it's efficient compared to their previous engine, and much faster rendering and whatnot

Damn. So impressive.

It's like Diablo 2 CG, now in real time. Even better in some ways.

*edit* Wait, they got Maya connected to their game engine to see the changes to the game in real time?

Wow, not sure if I would want a full game of a realistic take on the fantasy aspects, but this did look nice.

It's becoming more and more common, certainly the future of content pipelines. Content tools getting plugins that communicate directly with toher tools and running instances of the game through the network layer, stuff like Verse or this

I hate you Square-Enix.

So fucking amazing. Please let this be FFXV. Love the overall aesthetic.

wow...still having hard time believing its real time until watching this. I had a little doubt in my mind that SE just made that with CG and bullshit as target real-time for next-gen or something.

I filled the survey telling them I loved everything they showed. Well, I forgot the part about the Arab terrorists but I hope they will change that in the future.

They need to ship that engine to Eidos ASAP and give them tons of money to make Deus Ex: HR 2 and Legacy of Kain remake with it.

Filled out the survey, said that I liked everything except for the middle-easten setting and the AK-47 wielding terrorists. Also humbly requested they release future Final Fantasy titles on the PC, but from reading the info on luminous, it seems they're going in that direction anyway.

I'd kill for a post-apocalyptic setting final fantasy game

Yeah :(

I filled it out assuming they wanted to turn into a game at some point. Really hope they think their "world" over. I probably should have put in more of a good word about the CG though. Although I'm not the biggest fan of attempted photorealism in games, pushing the tech should be beneficial for everyone.

Is there any other feedback you would like to provide?
The clash between fantasy and real world elements, specifically the "ethnic" terrorists was disconcerting. An uncomfortable dynamic emerged, where we were meant to empathize with the girl because she was young, white-skinned and attractive, as opposed to the scary black/brown bad guys dressed in turbans wielding AK47s. We see enough of this in war shooters, the presence in fantasy games speaks of both insensitivity and laziness on SE's part. Technically, it was very pretty though.

I didn't mind that. Fantasy has been too much about european knights that it's nice to have a new theme to it.

Also note that I'm muslim. As much as I hate the discrimination we are getting post-911, just trying to be too politically correct destroys the fun out of most things.

Wow. After watching not just the tech demo, but also the video showing them manipulating the scene to prove that it is all real-time, I'm so ready for the next generation. Watch_Dogs and Star Wars 1313 were impressive, but this was so much more magnificent.

I also can't shake off the feeling that we'll see games much better than this throughout next generation. Just watch the Final Fantasy VII PS3 demo again today—games on the 360 and PS3 have surpassed what was so amazing at the time.

I would love this tech demo to be final fantasy 15, but after the final fantasy 7 tech demo they showed on ps3, I doubt that will happen. The art direction, setting, character model, and field map graphic all exceeds anything done in final fantasy history, and even though, I never liked Iwata as a designer, he has surpassed my expectation in this presentation. Maybe it was because Nomura was overseeing his work. Either way, I can not wait to see the first game to use this engine. I know Final Fantasy versus 13 is using only the lighting system of this luminous engine(which will still be amazing), but I can not wait to see the first final fantasy game to incorporate all aspect of this engine. I can only imagine what Final fantasy 15 will look like. I just hope, the tone will be somewhat similar.

Tech demos do nothing for me, cause 9 times out of ten you never see the finished product. That could be Final Fantasy 15, though I hope she isn't the main character. We already have a female lead with Lightning.

Looks great though.

Sony should have really had this at the end of their E3 press conference. It would have blown away everyone and got them talking about Sony again.

Wrote in the survey saying that this should be a real game with traditional, turn-based/menu-based combat. I really really hope if this ever becomes a real game, they don't westernize the gameplay. That said, everything else looked great, nice to see S-E isn't completely asleep at the wheel.

At this rate, with these platforms looming to their end and next-gen coming, the no-show that's Versus may as well be moved to a next generation platform using this engine.

We still won't see the game on store shelves even if they do that.

We're truly in for a treat next generation if this is what we'll be getting near the start. Honestly can't wait. Let's just hope the gameplay keeps up.

Just watched it again and I'm really in love with it. Sure I could do without the guns but other than that it's great. I keep hoping at the end that "Final Fantasy XV" will fade in instead of Square Enix, but it doesn't :(

The 1080p is the most unrealistic part to me.

If you sit at 720p, even at the low end rumors this isn't really that unfeasible.

Looking at the 1080p shots you can find a lot of flaws in everything, which helps believability even more.

If developers can do good image filtering, 720p is enough. The FXAA guy from nVidia had a good blog post about how movies don't have pixel depth detail (which I think was discussed on GAF). If next-gen games are rendered at 720p and upscaled well to 1080p it should be more than good enough to produce a pleasing image. Furthermore, maybe games will have to be locked at 30FPS to keep image quality this high. If so, hopefully they do what Criterion did with Hot Pursuit and poll the controller at 60Hz to keep the games responsive.

Why would they do that? If this was running real time on PS4, sure, then it would have made sense.
My assumption is that they are making this tech demo to eventually be put on the PS4. It wouldn't have been too different from when Kojima was first showing off MGS4 on what was definitely not PS3 hardware.
