Why is everyone saying I'll hate prometheus? I'm not terribly invested in the universe so if it's a bad alien movie, I can live with that. If it's bad Sci fi...

It at least looks cool right? Maybe I should just turn my brain off when I see it?

just watch it and form your own opinion.

i haven't seen it yet (gonna wait till after boards) but i'm still excited despite what the naysayers may prattle on about.

In general, I think movies are a better experience if you just watch and digest their plots later.

It's budget was 120-130 mil. It'll make that back domestically.
Yup, I've seen figures of 140M also float around. I think its safe to say that 200M figure is simply untrue and it will be in good shape to fund the sequel.

I'll never understand how Shrek 2 made that much money. It's good, but come on.
It came off of a highly loved first movie and exploded in the first two weeks and with decent legs it got there.

I thought it was beautifully shot, suspenseful, and had a lot of great acting. I also did not try to plug it in directly with the Alien universe, so I think my enjoyment was greater than those looking for a lot of answers, because this doesnt give much.

That Sunday drop for Prometheus looks pretty optimistic given the Saturday total. Even subtracting the $3.5M midnights from Friday's gross, Saturday was down 10%. I think there is a decent chance that the movie falls below $50M for the weekend when the actuals come out. I am also guessing that the Domestic total will be <$150. Still not too bad. The movie has already made $90M overseas, and will at least clear $300M worldwide. Possibly $400M.

Also, a lot of big drops this weekend. Sort of expected a larger drop from the Avengers since Madagascar and Prometheus both opened ultra-wide in 3D, but both it and MIB3 dropped even harder than most of the predictions from the Box Office site. The Snow White drop was also pretty poor.

I think we averaged waaaaaaaaay higher than nationwide for Madagascar 3. Not unusual for my location though.

Edit: and that's with the Heat game pulling away the crowds on Saturday night.

This time last year only Par's "Super 8" opened nationwide with $35 million, a modest bow for what bizzers hoped would become one of 2011's summer juggernauts.

lol Super 8

I thought the kids in Tree of Life were much more natural than any of the kids in Super 8. Spielberg my ass.

Will Smith is supposed to be a big box office draw, no? Maybe they just put too much value in that.

Will Smith is the same sort of Box Office draw as Johnny Depp is. And the sort of draw Hollywood should realize.

They are a draw when in an interesting movie.

Wasn't Sony expecting a Billion for MIBIII?

Thats his trailer? Good lord.

I think his whole family stayed in it with him, while shooting in NYC

People in the neighborhood complained and it was moved to a lot somewhere else

Didn't help tourists going there taking pics as if it was a fucking landmark or some shit

Prometheus is doing pretty good overseas and it's not doing bad domestically either (I don't expect big legs though, the movie is too divisive). Still good for a R-rated sci-fi flick. Should end up making money if the 120-130m budget is true.

Madagascar 3 opened lower than 2, despite a higher friday, it will do killer business in europe probably, so it'll make a decent amount of money too.

Prometheus is not as amazing as people expected but it's still enjoyable despite the very mediocre script.

Yeah, Smith might have been the last pure box office draw--where his presence guaranteed a certain minimum regardless of the film itself--and even that ship has sailed now. The big A-List stars now act as box office multipliers for movies people are already interested in seeing based on the concept.

Why did Will Smith have to turn down Django. Ugh.

Jamie Foxx looks ok in the trailer, but I think Will would have killed that role.

Alice in Wonderland was an interesting movie?

It was a "revival" of an old Disney favorite, was one of the first 3D movie coming out after avatar (and boy was it terrible) and I don't think people disliked the Burton/Depp schtick that much back then.

I wonder how Disney feels about The Lone Ranger now that Dark Shadows has shown that having Depp doesn't mean international box office hit anymore. Westerns don't do very well overseas.

Will Smith is a much bigger draw than Johnny Depp. He hasn't been in a film that flopped in over 10 years, despite having done a couple mid-budget dramas and a romantic comedy in addition to his blockbusters in that timeframe.

Depp is pretty hit or miss, same as the majority of people thought to be box office draws.

Capt. James West: [Whistles] I'd like to have everyone's attention for a moment. It seems we have had series of major misunderstandings here tonight. First of all, the whole "drummin' on the boobies" thing. Now in my native land...
Someone in crowd: Georgia?
Capt. James West: Africa. We use drums to communicate between villages. And as you can see by this gal, we could communicate all the way to Baton Rouge. Hell, on a clear night, we might even get Galveston. All I was saying to the gal was, "Hi, how ya doing? My name's Jim. How's your momma?" Then there was the whole "Redneck" comment. And I'm sensing that you took that negatively. But let's break down that word "Redneck". First word red, color of power, fire, passion. Second word neck... neck... hey I can't think of nothing for neck right now, but without that you still got red and that's something to be proud of.

Gtfo

Dark Shadows was the fault of whoever thought it was a summer worthy film. Would have done fine if they had held it for Halloween, or even if it had come out early spring or late winter this year.

Well, that was one problem, then the other problem was how much it sucked.

thats pretty fucking hilarious. i need to watch that movie again

I'm shocked at the responses to Prometheus. It definitely had some flaws but it was still a genuinely enjoyable ride. The 3D, visuals, and audio really made it a great IMAX experience. Glad to see that it had a good turnout for an R rated, sci-fi movie.

IMO, it's not right for his image AT ALL. The move isn't even remotely family friendly, which would cause all the soccer moms/dads to go WTF Will Smith?! and question whether or not to take their kids to his future films. TBH, it would be career suicide, for him. LOL

Some international numbers for the weekend:

Madagascar 3 - $75.5M from 28 markets

Prometheus - $39.2M ($91.2M total) from 54 markets

MIB3 - $38.3M ($352.1M total) from 79 markets

Snow White - $24.6M ($83.5M total) from 52 markets

Avengers - $7.8M ($824.4M total) for 54 markets

Avengers is sitting at $1.396B worldwide, and will probably break the $1.4B barrier on Wednesday or Thursday. Japan will probably be the likely factor in whether the movie hits $1.5B or not. I can see it getting to $1.475B or so without Japan.

Nevermind Prometheus budget talk. But I think people should go in with whatever expectations they want. I went in with pretty high ones and it hit the mark for me. And if it disappoints, so what. It's just a movie.

Prometheus is not going to some massive worldwide event but it doesn't need to be. It was a modestly priced and will make Fox a tidy profit.

While that is true, it kinda goes against the whole point of the profession.

You know, being an ACTOR.

Unadjusted Prometheus will be the biggest movie in the Alien franchise pretty easily. It'll be 3rd biggest adjusted, but that's nothing to brag about.

I love when actors reinvent themselves and take edgy countercast roles. Except Scientologists.
