Oh, Apple :D :D :D

Found a problem in the RC when a program interrupted the shutdown process. I closed the program, and proceeded to BSOD when I tried to shutdown again.

Hopefully the RTM has this all figured out since Windows 7 had some problems that existed pre-RTM.

I dislike that Windows Error Reporter was attempting to send my 300+ MB memory dump on my slow Internet connection.

And the legacy desktop will look horrendous. :X

Why? This tablet I am on is very high DPI compared to what the Windows desktop was designed for. Everything was small until I set the scaling to 125% and now it looks peachy and normal. It should just do that by default is all - and hopefully will come release time.

That legacy scaling is terrible. It mangles apps. Windows 8 metro scaling is done right.

They do this every year, and it bugs me. They honestly don't need to compare themselves with another company. Why they would not only do so, but present the results in a deceptive way, boggles my mind.

Because Mac's continued failure to break out of it's small niche is propably a little embarassing to Apple. They are the biggest, wealthiest and most beloved tech company in the world, so everything they do needs to be presented as huge success and destroying the competition. Which works well with iPads and iPhones, but not with Macs. So instead they need to be creative and selective with numbers to make Macs seem like just as big of a success as their other products are.

Comparing themselves with another company is fine. A pie chart would have made more sense.

Not sure why they used pie chart for Android but not for Windows.

You're not sure? Really Not sure why?

I think we all know WHY they choose the charts they did for their comparison, it's just amusing because its so transparent.

Is the music player suppose to suck so much ass or am I missing something? It found like 800 of 17000 songs, and for some reason music keeps crashing all of Windows for me. I am lost and frustrated...mostly frustrated. Keep in mind this is a clean install. What is the overall point of the music app? Because as far as being an actual app who's purpose is to play music and organize said music it sucks ass. Again...unless I'm missing something.

No, you aren't doing anything wrong. The music app is just that bad. "blah blah, it's still not finished blah". I don't care. It's broken, it's awful and the steps from the CP to the RP weren't exactly huge, so I don't have much confidence, that it will be better in the RTM. Maybe the Xbox Music app will change everything, but I kinda doubt it. I just hope the Track 8 guys will port their iOS app to Windows 8, because right now it's way more appealing and functional than the music app ever was. Plus, it does Metro better and doesn't shove ads and store content in my face.

I had two options. When I set 'use XP style scaling' I got a lot of blurry message boxes and such. But if I uncheck it it seems to work fine.
Here's what I mean: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5843/asus-zenbook-prime-ux21a-review/4

ASUS' solution is to ship the UX21 with Windows set to 125% DPI scaling by default, unfortunately most applications (including many of Microsoft's own) don't deal with non-integer DPI scaling very well.

In Skype, some text elements are tiny while others are huge. PCMark Vantage is an example of where you see this as well:

tinytext2.jpg

Here the scaled text actually can't fit in the area allocated for it, while the rest of the text is entirely too small.

pcmarkvantagescaling.jpg

And then there's the problem of apps not having high resolution assets and icons.

Mother of fuck, why are the ribbon tab headers WRITTEN IN ALL CAPS?

It looks horrible.

Aside from that, it's Excel. Like the little beehive pattern motif in the upper right too.

can we connect our windows phones to windows 8 yet? reply to texts etc. through windows 8? was that ever hinted at or did i make it up?

edit: they really need to change those smilies. eurgh.

couple of questions

1. how do I get access to my 'my music' 'my docs' etc from my win 7 partition? If I click to get access it throws an error.

2. music/vids etc, I can't add those to 'my libraries' because they are on a mapped network drive and thus can't be indexed/added. Which sucks. is there a way around that?

But these are menu items, not titles. It's like using all caps text for the pivot menu - it looks ridiculous.

Meh, look at the top of this site. All those titles are in caps as well and clickable.

I think it helps the menus stand out more instead of blending into the rest of the functions around them.

That's how you write titles.
I disagree. To be honest, the human brain disagrees. Reading all caps is always harder than reading a normal word that starts with a capital letter. The visual memory dictates that a human is always able to more quickly grasp a word that is written with a capital letter at the beginning, but not in all caps. All caps effectively means that you need to focus on reading the damn thing, instead of just recognizing it intuitively.

Look at that - simple, elegant, readable. Not that monstrous abomination above.

That's only true when you're talking about large amounts of text content. LIKE A FULL SENTENCE AND/OR THOUGHT THAT INVOLVES MORE THAN A SIMPLE THOUGHT OR CATEGORY. Titles on the other hand benefit from caps because they separate themselves through intentionally being formatted differently.

The example you're showing doesn't have anything around it, at that moment, so it really can't blend with anything. As soon as you expand the ribbon it will just melt into the rest of the functions.

So I am on Consumer Preview on my laptop (which is essentially a Diablo 3 portable player). Is there any reason I should upgrade to Consumer Release? I really don't feel like downloading all the drivers and reinstalling them if I can keep using the CP version. It's stable enough for the most part, and aside from Diablo 3, I just use it to browse Gaf.

I figure I can update later when the final version come out and not having to go through this again. I also don't understand why can't you just update from CP to CR.

You won't be able to update from the consumer or release preview to the final build.

I don't think this was discussed by any of the oem's yet but have any of them talked about lte chipsets being integrated into their tablets? I am starting to think I'm going to drop my smartphone (unless wp8 really impresses me) and add data to my tablet and go with a cheap ting phone for calls/txt's and pocket the $30 difference.

Curious which ones will be supporting the lte networks in the states.... was thinking verizon since they have the bigger lte network but would consider at&t's as well.

You can allways go with a mifi device . But i'd expect to not hear anything about LTE till later in the year its still to early yet. I'm hoping that I can put whatever hardware i need in to pick and choose

Yes, there's a few minor issues like that. No way rations that. Essentially some programs juts use there own UI and its set at a set size. Its even worse when they combine it with standard menu api stuff - which causes things to not fit in alloyed spaces.

Programs like Skype *look* like Aero but its not using default UI. Actually, it even has an option to use windows or Skype ui, and with default windows settings they would look the same...

So, there may be issues with older and poorly programmed stuff. The older will always be bored but he newer stuff, especially Skype and the benchmark stuff, you know big name programs, would be fixed if there's any competency at hand in these companies. (ok ,youre right to be nervous about it!). But I do not think the issue is with MS or windows. Osx will have the same issue if a program is done in the same fashion I am sure.

See a bunch of touch screen typos. Sorry.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the hardware was not interchangeable.... if it is then that would be ideal because I am somewhat worried my fav hardware will not have the right hardware for verizons lte.

Not really interested in a mifi device because it would be another thing to carry and another battery to keep charges.... I would add tethering to my phone before doing that but the extra cost for that is almost buying 2 full data plans which is unacceptable to me.

Really the whole point behind this is I want to move to 1 data plan going forward (since it seems verizon is going to bungle their shared plans and would guess the others will follow suit). I am thinking it would be better to have data on my tablet than phone hence me going this route.

Also looks like win8 might have its first "exclusive" launch game on pc.... http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/06/12/no-7-samurai-skulls-of-the-shogun-goes-win-8-only/

Betting that secret feature is cross gameplay to be talked about at pax prime.

So, there will be tablets with the RT version and tablets with the full version of Windows 8? Am I getting that right?

I am holding off from getting a new laptop / ipad as I love the idea of a hybrid that can perform all the productivity I want but still watch iTunes movies and play Steam games (mostly indies with a 360 pad plugged in).

Yes there are RT tablets which will basicly be just like andriod and ipads . Then there are full x86 windows tablets that will work just like windows.

The big thing from computerx were the tablet hybrids that would plug into a keyboard dock and be just like an ultra book

Cool.

Yeah I saw those, that's what got me so exited, the Asus one I saw looked fantastic.

Which one of those tablet/ultrabook devices impressed you guys the most? Asus' Transformer book or Acer's? I like the Asus stuff from an aesthetic point of view but one of those is probably going to be my next laptop.

I'm hoping for this in Apollo and RTM. Considering that Apollo will apparently be a part of the Windows RT kernel, so I hope that Windows Phone and Windows will be as synced as possible.

I think it is an issue because the legacy desktop isn't getting scaled the same way metro apps are. DPI scaling in OS X is done in a similar fashion to iOS. The system isn't changing specific elements when it scales for high DPI. It's using the same method as iOS where you get an exact copy of your app, but pixel doubled instead. 2x resources will of course need to be provided by the developer, but the system recognizes those resources and automatically loads those instead of the 1x ones.

not only will the dock/keyboard give extra battery and space, but also (maybe) a discrete graphics card. and the tablet it self contains i7 (hopefully it will stay that way in the final build).
actually, i5 would be fine. but the active cooling port needs to moved imo (wish it was passively cooled =[ ).

What make is that?

E: Oh, Asus. hmm

I think its still far too early to pick one.... We still need to see what hp, dell, lenovo actually come out with.... also curious to see what nokia has in store for win8. I kinda expect them to be able to best the stuff we have seen so far from acer/asus.

So, my Ubuntu installation was messing up, so I decided I was going to reformat my drive and start over, but instead, I decided to put Windows 8 on here. Why not? Not to jinx myself, but so far it's been really easy. Sure Metro is really dumb and useless, but it's really easy to ignore, and Windows 8 is faster and smoother for me than 7 was by far, and oh god FLASH PLAYER IS SMOOTH. That's the thing I missed the most. I hated not being able to watch shit in HD or fullscreen. So good.

I hope that they give you an option to ignore Metro and bring back the start menu button, because I'd probably pick up W8 if they did. Hell, I still may.

The Start button is not coming back but as you said, on a desktop, you don't see the Metro Start screen very often anyway. Once you organize it it's actually much faster than the Start button for launching your less often used apps. Anything you use frequently should be pinned to the taskbar.
