Seriously? People are actually nitpikcing THIS now? That the squid baby grew without sustenance? Reallly????
Yup. Considering what we've seen from the franchise it's a rather silly argument.

Right. All of this took place in what, less than a minute? Both of them certainly would have been disoriented from the explosion of the craft and its impact on the ground. Not to mention the debris flying through the air. They were both generally running away from the chaos. I don't consider this to be a reasonable nitpick at all.
I probably shouldn't have this was an unreasonable nitpick, I just disagree. Yes, I believe that her rush to get dressed, then her ejection, then collision of the ships, the impact of the ship on the ground, would sufficiently disorient her to the extent that she would simply run away from the chaos.
Hell, this post even argues the pressure waves alone would have killed her:

To reiterate, I do not take issue with her behavior in that scene.
Good luck.I'd love to do an OT for Alien and have everyone dissect the inconcistencies and characters in it like they have in this thread.

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm not complaining simply because it grew but rather that it conveniently grew to just the right size to take on an Engineer and win, just in time to save momma. Consider it the icing on the cake made of too much lazy plot development throughout the movie prior.Seriously? People are actually nitpikcing THIS now? That the squid baby grew without sustenance? I understand your larger point. One gets that sense that Scott didn't burn too many calories trying to keep the characters and their motivations consistent throughout the film. This is probably a valid criticism of his films in general. While I don't share your views here, I can respect them.
As for me, there was a lot I liked about this movie, the things that bothered me were not so much the plot ambiguity or lack of answers - I can dig that, particularly if there is a sequel, it was the numerous times I felt like characters in this story acted exactly contrary to how you would expect them too, with no explanation but to further the story to the next set-piece.
I had hoped for more from this movie, and I'm willing to admit it was the weight of my expectations dashed against the reality of this movie that has disappointed me so.

I think everyone has granted the Alien franchise plenty of leeway on xenomorph metabolism and growth rates but that's always been helped in the past by the fact that the xenomorph escapes out into a larger environment where one can more comfortably assume they found sustenance somewhere. But in this instance that one thread allowing for rational explanation is removed.
How is babby squid formed?
I think it is entirely plausible that it found food on the Prometheus/pod and this is what I believe. Would the movie have been better if they had presented a scene of it getting into the ship's food storage? How does something survive and grow without sustenance?

Cry moar! You know everything I said is true. Avatar > John Carter > Prometheus.
It is interesting, I don't think you'll see this level of scrutiny for much else.
I don't really have much of an issue with alien growth cycles not being realistic. That totally falls into "who cares" territory for me because it's a fucking alien. As long as it is internally consistent, it's not a problem. There are much more serious issues with the narrative than wondering how Mr Tentacles grew so large in few hours. If you want to approach it scientifically, there are possible explanations too. For example, it could already have stored up energy from feeding while inside Shaw's womb, and it would be enough to power it into full growth even after being removed.

Oh lawd.
By cutting away then cutting back later
Again, or it could have just eaten the food on the ship. An entirely plausible explanation that did not been to be depicted.I like this theory, makes sense that it'd store up energy as it can't be certain it will be able to 'eat' when it's 'born'.

Facehugger -> chestburster: human body for sustenance.
Chestburster -> xeno: surely running around eating shit/people
This one was locked in a lab with no food source.

But there's no food "on the ship" since it's locked inside the auto-doc room. Unless of course it ate those two missing crew members who weren't accounted for.![]()
The chestburster from Alien grew to being human sized before eating any of the crew. It continued to grow afterwards, but it was significantly larger than chestburster size when it ate the first of the crew. It looked like "adolescent xenomorph" size.

Thank you.
It really seems like some people haven't actually seen Alien
Uh, i thought the giant chestbuster killed the two lab technician that tried to restrain Shaw.
After waking up, they went into the lab and were mauled by it. Remember the blood splatter on the inside of the lab door?
Maybe it's just from the magical goo....it can do whatever the fuck it wants whenever it wants. The more I think about it, the more I hate this movie because of the magical goo. It's like the fuckin stupid mood slime from Ghostbusters II. I'm almost surprised that the end of the movie didn't have Fassbender dancing to Singing in the Rain just to put everyone and everything in a better mood.
I suppose this is a reasonable explanation as well. I guess my broader point is that I don't consider the growth to be another one of the dreaded "plot holes".It's possible, but theory that it stores up energy makes a lot of sense as it also explains how the Alien in Alien 1 grows without any readily available food sources.
I still don't think it is unreasonable to believe that there is food (or at least some form of sustenance) in there, though I guess I was wrong in originally saying that it could have gotten into the food in the rest of the ship. But there's no food "on the ship" since it's locked inside the auto-doc room. The goo is nanomachines. It appears to contain a mechanical element when it's on David's finger.
Will be interesting to see it blown up when the BR is released.
I couldn't really give a shit about any of the characters. Only "death" that sort of affected me was David because I found him to be the most interesting.
In fact I'd have preferred the film to open with David just doing his day-to-day in Prometheus for like 15 minutes.
Hell if Noomi Rapace also got crushed by the ship I wouldn't have minded, which is strange considering how she's kind of this film's Ripley

The chestbuster size really isn't a problem anyway. It was growing the moment Shaw pulled it from her abdomen.
This thread is moving too fast.I don't think we have any reason to believe that that thing ate anybody, and was just alone in the room the whole time.

I am now inclined to believe that it at least ate someone. The blood got there somehow.
We never see the thing Shah has removed from her body do anything after it's removed...and she's alone in that room during that whole event.
One of the techs who came to get her is the Scottish woman who is in the next scene with the Weyland reveal, so she's not eaten (at least not at that point).

No, that doesn't make sense scientifically. When you put on mass, you have to actually have consumed that mass at some point (actually you've consumed waaaay more mass than you put on, with some of it becoming food energy and some of it being shat and pissed out as waste). Even if you assume that the aliens have magical metabolisms that produce no waste product, it still needs to consume, at minimum, the mass it has to put on in order to put it on.
Unless Shaw ate 260KGs of Surf n' Turf during the couple of hours of her pregnancy, that's a no-go. The alien fetus would also have the same mass as its future larger version, condensed significantly to make this possible. Unless they have 4-dimensional vaginas for them to hide it all, of course.
Couldn't the blood just have been from the alien itself? It was removed from her womb after a C-section. Even though she tried to freeze it after that, there was still blood all over. When it eventually recovered and started growing again, it would no doubt try to move around the room and get out of the door. Failing which the tentacles would just smear blood all over the windows.
It is in noone's best interest to go down this road. Finally, the MGS4 movie we deserve.

Just occurred to me..... how does one make an Alien movie without Sigourney Weaver?
That shit ain't right.
Shah left the room pretty bloody...![]()

ExactlyUltimately it doesn't matter too much. If it ate someone, it was a member of the crew that was inconsequential, and if it didn't, rapid growth without any sustenance has been a thing since Alien.
After Prometheus I've got a new favourite Alien character.
