PROMETHEUS UNMARKED SPOILER THREAD!

I know that broski, calm down. But you attempted an explanation on scientific grounds, which wasn't valid.

There's a lot of stuff that doesn't work when you try to bump sci-fi tropes against science. Supposedly we're talking about a highly advanced species that doesn't behave by the rules of science like we know it. Heck, the pressure from being in outer space didn't collapse it's lungs and crush it when Ripley opened the airlock in Alien.

Molecular acid... for blood.

I don't wanna go through like 800909347 pages. Why did David want to put that Alien shit in the dudes drink?

He wanted to see what the goo did to humans. Maybe he wanted to check its regenerative properties (if any) as that was the only reason Weyland was on board/why he funded the whole thing.

It was some sort of experimentation, but the motive for it is unknown. It could have been pure curiosity, or it could have been a test to see if it was a potential cure for Mr Weyland.

Haha true. I guess this is the issue I have with this thread. People have issues with stuff that doesn't make sense, but it hasn't really made sense from the beginning. Character gripes I can understand, but even characters have never been all that great in these movies.

David was seemingly following Weyland's instructions. He was performing an experiment, he wanted to see what would happen.

Gaf thinks;

1. Weyland told him to TRY HARDER. This was after they found no life signs of the creators/aliens/engineers. So, that translated into David experimenting. -- Personally, I kind of feel like he knew something would happen, as his whole.. 'everything big starts from blah blah' moment. I mean for all anyone else knew, it could have just been space coffee...

2. Dave was sort of a dick.

Prometheus 2 has cloned Ripley played by 65 year old Sigourney Weaver going back in time to kill space cobras

Maybe she's an android the whole time and they just bring out an earlier model of her. Instead of Guy Pearce with prosthetics we get young Weaver via CGI ala Tron. Retcon'd.

The chestburster from Alien grew to being human sized before eating any of the crew.
Which doesn't mean it didn't find something else to sustain itself on since it was loose and at large on the ship. Much different than being locked in a small room with no apparent sustenance whatsoever. One approach gives the viewer at least a semi-plausible explanation for the growth that follows while the other simply doesn't.

To make Prometheus GAF try harder.
You're just disappointed by your creators.

Except the Alien in the first movie didn't eat anything until after it had fully developed. An old script might say it did but it's not referenced in the movie or anywhere by the writers, director, etc.
Doesn't meant it didn't eat anything though. Lifeforms tend to eat. In fact, one could deduce this one did because it's now much larger.
Not sure why some would rather go with "nah, it just magically grew in size without even needing to eat anything"... Sure, it's some crazy space monster in a science fiction story, so there's some leeway, but... is it even necessary, here? Does that idea make more sense? Is it really better? More satisfying? Oh, well.

I took it as David wanted to see what would happen, hoping that it would be some cure or something similar. His whole discussion with Holloway seemed to explain his reasoning... "What would you be willing to do? Would you do it all to find your answer?" something like that. Holloway said he would do everything which David agreed with. Then he put the small sample into the drink.

Best idea that came up was to see if it had healing capabilities.

More important question why didn't he call out David for sticking his finger in his drink.
"Oy! Don't stick your dirty robot fingers into my drink" throws drink into Davids face*

Like others have said, this thread moves quickly, so if this has been asked, I apologize.

So, the advanced and rare surgical bed is only calibrated for males (if memory serves, hence the calibration for 'foreign body - abdominal cavity'), right? The movie went out of its way to point out that Vickers planned for contingencies, and in fact the bed is part of that. So why would she overlook something like that?

Answer: she was born male.

The father-son dynamic is turned upside down -- Weyland hates her for depriving him of his son, and in turn, Weyland creates an idealized son, David. And when it comes to trust, it's apparent that he only trusts David to follow his orders. To the point of excluding Vickers entirely.

The only alternative answers I can think of is that a.) she's dumb and didn't check, or b.) the medibed was meant for Weyland all along. Except, if the latter was the case -- why have it visibly displayed in Vickers' quarters, where other people WILL see it, when Weyland himself is hidden away? Oh, and Weyland mentioned that he had only 'days' left to live - I don't think a surgical bed is going to be helping him any, unless he foresaw some sort of surgical knowledge that the Engineers would have to restore his life.

The Alien universe has established :repeatedly: that sex, and gender, is no big deal (compared to face-raping aliens, that is).

In Alien, Ripley offhandedly asks Lambert if she's had sex with Ash (yet). Not angrily - almost as a given, like in the close, cramped quarters of the Nostromo, it's going to happen.

And in Aliens, there's mention of the "Arcturian poontang" -- where it don't matter if it's a male or female, because they're Arcturian! And this is on a military, very macho ship!

I think one of the reasons that 'normal' sexuality is toned down in importance in these movies is so that when their version of sex appears -- facehuggers, eggs, chestbursters, worms with fondness for the mouth -- it's all the more shocking.

..

Perhaps all of these people are idiots. This would explain a lot.

Oh, and I know that Vickers being born a man doesn't change the story at all. It's minor. It might add some fuel to the father/offspring conflict, and that's it.

I'm inclined to believe that David had worked out the general usage of the goo- basically an engineer was supposed to ingest it, but he wasn't sure what would happen afterwards.

Also, in a way he was granting Holloway's request to meet his maker.

The bed was meant for Weyland, most likely. Also, when Shaw goes in to look at it, Vickers says "don't touch it". They also had a discussion about how it was expensive and how Vickers only intended on using it herself.

No.

It's a clue that there is someone else living in those quarters.

The pod appears to be a mere plant for an eventual pay-off, but it has a dual purpose, due to economy of screenwriting.

Er... that whole lifeboat was Weyland's, not hers (well, I suppose she inherits it).

Huh. Good call.

I never got that the pod was where Weyland was, I guess I never saw any of the same scenery. This would, however, explain why post-surgery, Shaw's first stop was there.

At least I get to blame this harebrained idea on my 'friend'. Hee!

I strugged through the "Spoony Experiment" review of Prometheus yesterday, against my better judgement.

How the fuck do people stand those guys? They are effortlessly obnoxious and without insight. It was still worth watching it though for the hilarity that was them racking their brains trying to figure out why the bed in Vickers' chamber was geared towards males, and coming up empty-handed. They 'discuss' Weyland right afterwards and still don't make the connection.

I thought they were implying that at the time they saw it it made no sense.

I just realized, she had sex with Yanak in that bed...

Man, thinking back...that's a pretty amazing pick up line - "hey...you a robot?"

lol.

That wasn't her bed. It was a medpod (or whatever it's called in that universe) separate from her actual bed.

There's a lot of people being "deliberately obtuse" when it comes to this movie.

How did mohawk and hoodie get lost when they were being tracked in the 3D map monitor and had direct contact to the ship the entire time?

What was the green goo that David finds and sees shining flakes in it as he examines it between his fingers? It wasn't mentioned or shown again in the film IIRC.

Love this thread :)

I submit that they got lost because Fifield (mohawk) was high. To me that's a reasonable guess, but it definitely isn't clear from the movie.

because aliens.

The line about "making up an excuse about a map" was smooth as hell.

Yep, that little tune he plays afterwards was great too.

That's the 64 dollar question, how on earth did they get lost. I can only assume he lost the connection back to the ship due to the storm which meant he didn't have access to the map. It's flaky, the alternative is poor writing.

It was black goo, the same goo (although it might not be) that the engineer at the beginning of the movie drank. It reacts differently depending on who ingested it.
