Should Apple change the home screen for their iOS devices?

iOS is what it is. A safe, usually non-offending aesthetic for people who choose not to extensively personalize their interfaces.

Android will always be the king in that aspect at least:

Although choice is good in a lot of ways, it also leads to stuff that often looks like shit. In this thread I expected to see awesome current examples of what choice brings to the table. I honestly saw none. I think apple is fine with the design advantages of having every front screen look the same across all app devices until they figure out an alternative that doesn't make users make their phones look like shit. My mom had incredibly fast adoption rate to the iPhone and iPad because of the simplicity. Only power users complain about not being able to make their devices look terrible

I do think they need a better display of desired information. Notification center was a step in that direction. But if I'm a twitter, Facebook, insta gram, yelp review, whatever junky, it'd be nice to get that information on a custom front screen somehow. But the prerequisite, is only being able to do so in a manner that can't look like shit.

hey divvy maybe you could quote those bigass images?

also, lol at "consumerslaves" in the bg of that berserk android interface (is that the evangelion one?)

That is thing about customization: Everyone is able to make what they want. Surely you could create something that you'd enjoy using.

Those Android themes are kind of amazing, seriously.

Here's my home screen. I think it looks nice. You just need to make sure the wallpaper is simple enough to not distract from the icons and not too bright.

Can you post that wallpaper?

I think you were posting this while the post above you was still being made. So, look one post above yours.

Sorry, I did quote them, it just didn't shrink them very much.

And no that's not the official evangelion one.

The main reason I can't stand iOS devices is the horrendous forced grids/lack of widgets and inconsistent user interfaces across apps. Stock android is rough around the edges but customized it looks like sex on a screen.

It's pretty easy to jailbreak an iPhone and install any number of skins/extensions/etc.

iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak Released
It’s here! The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 was just released after months of anticipation, and months of hard work by pod2g and the rest of the leaders in the jailbreak community... it took about 3 months for a jailbreak to come to fruition.

Samsung Galaxy S III rooted already
The brand new Samsung Galaxy S III hasn’t even hit the shelves yet and it’s already been rooted. Thanks to the awesome and well known XDA Developer Chainfire we now have full access before the phone is even commercially available. The only issue with achieving root is the fact he doesn’t have the device in-hand for testing, but the process should remain the same come release day.

I cannot stand the Metro UI

It looks terrible and feels like going back in time IMO

I don't want flat, blocky looking objects. It is way to simplistic and bland.

From a personal viewpoint, I don't like the iOS homescreen interface. After seven months with a 4S, part of why I went back to Android was because I missed having widgets and customization options.

From a general business viewpoint, Apple apparently doesn't need to change shit since they're still selling iPhones like they're ice water in hell.

I find it odd that for the past several years MS & Apple both have been pushing the removal of desktop icons and trying to get users to pin them to bars and have almost nothing actually on the desktop. Then Apple makes a phone that is nothing but tons of icons all over, and the other phones follow suit. I'm not well versed in the Metro UI, but it seems to be a bit better. I'm definitely over having 8 pages of icons on my iPhone and the folder system is bad imo. I would like to see them go in a new direction.

Apple should lock things down even more. Only a few preselected wallpapers should be allowed. All native apps should have a place on the home screen and not be allowed to be moved elsewhere. Want to open maps, it's right there next to calendar. Just like how the phone dialer is bottom, left of screen, people should be able to pick up an iphone and intuitively know where each app is located. this will give apple more opportunities to keep things unified and elegant.

All I want is, like, maybe a weather icon that actually updates to show the weather.

Fuck widgets
Fuck most the shit people "pimp their Android lock screens" with
Fuck Windows Mobile's cluttered layout.

Sounds like you want an Android phone. You can have a static grid of icons on every screen and a 1 x 1 widget (or one of any size you like) that updates to show the weather.

Heck, they could do an optional widget homescreen that could be turned off, and only allow certain layouts and I'd be happy. Just enough to have weather, scores, etc. without launching an app.

Here's my Droid X layout. I am going to iPhone 5 though.

I've used Android devices, I usually just have it look like iOS.

Android as an OS is fine, but it's customisation means nothing to me because 99/100 customised Android layouts looks like complete shit.

Why do so many Android themes duplicate the battery life, time and date?

why wouldn't you? with the excess screen size, they can display information twice since moving your eyes around the entire screen will cause eye fatigue.

The homescreen? Absolutely not.

It's simple, predictable and efficient. It's easy to understand and easy enough to use that the OS itself rarely gets in the way. I appreciate that I am, at most, usually 2 or 3 gestures away from any application on the phone/pad.

The lockscreen should be more useful by default and have no idea why it hasn't become more useful over the years.

So you can have it look like iOS, it's fine as an OS, it would allow you to have that weather widget/icon you want - and your complaint is? That you don't like how other people choose to customise their phones?

So giving people options is bad?

I don't have an iPhone right now (waiting for 5), but if they added the ability to make the Notification center as your lock screen, then that'd be pretty much all I'd care about or need.

I love the simplicity and ease of use of iOS. Focusing on the apps is the smart move.

It totally has. It's pretty much your notification center right now.

Someone has to explain this line of thinking to me. Calling the 6th generation iPhone the iPhone 5.

By this logic, the iPhone 4 woud've been the iPhone 3, since the 3G and the 3Gs look exactly the same.
And no, the 3G wasn't the third iPhone either.

See how the lack of options suck?

do you actually say the time like that?
also, sweet double clock.

I like the look of the clock. Also, I can hide the status bar if the second clock really bothered me.

That's the thing that I do like about Android. I can use different launchers to create entirely different looks on my phone. Does the iPhone even support different keyboards?

I'm excited for the iPhone 5, but I will miss the customization.

Yeah. That's exactly my complaint.

I'm not allergic to Android or anything. I like iOS just fine though. I feel no need to switch.

The home screen is super stale.

However, the going theory is that it will change; they're just waiting for the iPhone 5 event to really show it. A lot of people are pointing to Passbook hinting at a significant design overhaul.

I hope it's true.

I really love the new WP8 start screen, though I will likely user larger icons with a few smaller one sprinkled in. Options are great. iOS needs a massive face lift to be honest, it looks 6-7 years old.

If they do it's more to shed the "old" look of it and seem fresh, and change for the sake of change is rarely good. It's long in the tooth, sure, but I spend 99% of my time in apps, doing the things I need to do with my phone, not staring at a home screen/launch pad.

I am disappointed that they didn't release any sort of developer tools for Notification Center, though. Last year when they announced just Weather and Stocks I figured 3rd party ones would be a lock at some point.

The logic is obvious. iPhone 4 was the last major new phone. 4S was basically a half hearted upgrade. So calling it the iPhone 5 implies a generational leap. It's not complex.
