Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

Something I just found out while going through TVTropes.

In Super Mario RPG, you can go to Booster Hill late in the game and find a Snifit training to join Booster. He has pitifully small attack and is quite easy to beat. If you DO let him win, however, he'll get hired as "Snifit 4" and you can see him in Booster Tower.

You can keep doing this a few more times to get more of them to show up in Booster Tower. But when you get to 8, you'll see the 8th Snifit in a corner. Try to talk to him, and he says "The boss only wants 7 Snifits! All my training was in vain! What a rip!"

Wow!

And I thought I knew everything about this game...

SMRPG is simply one of the most detailed games on any genre and plattform. It has a good balance of fun and difficulty. Great music and lovable characters (I miss Mallow u_u)

And, maybe not that mindblowing, but just to contribute to this thread: The mushroom the little goomba sells you can turn you in an invencible mushroom which can regenerate health every turn but cannot attack...

Well, as long as we are coming off of a decent Mario Bros fact I might as well bring us down to a lame one.

You know how in Super Mario Land the first level's background was very bare and simple?

But do you see how the cloud stands out in detail?! That is because it is modeled after a very famous cloud.

Bam. Different shading, but it looks like they went out of their way to make the cloud look like the one in the original SMB. Most likely not a coincidence, as they probably saw the cloudbush secret and thought it to be sacred.

A couple other Super Mario Land facts:

You don't actually throw fireballs in SML. When you collect a flower you turn into Superball Mario and throw...Superballs

Also, these weird enemies:

The Pionpi, here it is from the manual:

Are based on the Jiang Shi, or Chinese hopping vampire:
A jiang shi, also spelled jiangshi or chiang-shih (in Wade-Giles), and also known as a Chinese "hopping" vampire or zombie, is a type of reanimated corpse in Chinese legends and folklore. "Jiangshi" is read as Goengsi in Cantonese, Gangshi in Korean and Kyonshī in Japanese. According to legend, in the day, the jiangshi rests in a coffin or hides in dark places such as caves. At night, it moves around by hopping, with its arms outstretched. It kills living creatures to absorb their qi (life essence).

Man, what a weird game.

I just learned that the Xbox 360 has a QWERTY keyboard layout.

To change it: simply go to the Language settings and select the appropriate option.

lmao, this seems to surprise someone new every couple of weeks. It's been available from the start, but I guess we can blame MS for not making the option clearer. You really should be able to change that from the actual keyboard instead of having to dig through the options.

It's funny, I found the option for QWERTY on the 360 early, thank goodness. But I didn't realize the PSP also had a QWERTY option until just last week. Thank goodness too because that old cellphone style keyboard default is atrocious.

Well the fact marios attack in sml just bounces up and down should've tipped me off, but WTF at the superball.
I miss the days where you could read the manual and discover all this additional stuff that many people would never know...

I just checked and I'm glad to see it did get mentioned in the VC version of the manual too.

Man, I was like, 6 or 7, I don't read no stinkin' manuals.

I always do now ever since No More Heroes had that comic in it that explained the premesis of the game.

Read that while that tumblr said that Golden Axe effects came from prisioners.... the sound effects for that game actualy came from Rambo and Conan movies

It looks different and not modeled after the bottom shot. I'm not seeing the likeness at all in shape or shading. The first shot has a much wider cloud.

never knew about the PSP and I had even been a heavy user of the web browser and pre psn media site.

This just occurred to me while having steak for dinner.

"Well done."

I freely admit I'm probably reading too much into it, but with the absurdist humor of EWJ, I wouldn't be surprised if that was an intentional gag.

I don't think that's a coincidence at all. I assumed it was a joke anyway.

Potential mindblowing fact for people 100 - 200 years from now:

Did you know that the system that allows you to transfer centuries-old Pokemon into Pokemon Uranium/Plutonium was actually hinted at about 200 years ago in Pokemon Black/White? There's a scientist NPC in the "Poketransfer building" (a place people used to transfer Pokemon from one game to another) who says,

"With this research of mine, I also want to have an impact on people in the future... people living 100 or 200 years from now!

Crazy what kind of foresight they had, huh? They been planning this for hundreds of years!

Nowadays you'll be lucky to even get a manual with your games.

I love when this happens with modern games, its super surprising. Most of the backstory in Rayman Origins is in it's manual for instance. It also has the proper pronunciation for Lums which I spent the past decade mispronouncing!

Luhms ftw

There are two variantions of Silent Hill, excluding the greatest hits version. The shiny version was the first shipment given to those that pre-ordered the game.

I think I read it before, but I completely forgot about it.

gTgQ1.jpg

(NES version has Erdrick from Dragon Warrior, but the Famicom version said Link)
I remember this. Awesome Easter Egg.

It actually blows my mind that people still find a 2006 meme funny enough to put them in 2011 (or 2012) games. :(

That sort of reminds me of Zelda: Links Awakening for the GB...

xAoDV.jpg

When you sprinkled this guy with Magic Powder, he had these things to say:

"Hey mon!"
"You know me, I like short names the best..."
"It can display millions of polygons!"
"I definitely need it, as soon as possible!"

In 1993, it sounded like gibberish. But he was talking about the development of the N64 (aka: Project Reality). This screen shot is from Links Awakening DX, but it's still the same dialogue that was used in the original game.

Hahaha, that's really awesome. I wish they'd still drop hints of upcoming systems in their games like this... or I wonder if they still doing that... HMM...

Holy shit, no wonder they bounce around. This whole time I just it was just a really odd simplistic fireball sprite (Given the simplistic art direction of the game). Mystery solved!

Dunno if it's been posted before or not, but this blew my mind when I realized it.

Just Cause 2.

It can be taken two ways:

you can cause lots of random destruction, "just 'cause" or because you are fighting for a Just cause

If you want a technical viewpoint, you have to pronounce it via the longer pronunciation, sort of like 'cores'. It would need the apostrophe for the 'coz/cuz' versions as you pronounce it that way as you're saying Just Because, but then contracting it to Just 'Cause.

I think it has been said in the thread before, but it also does make me wonder how many people have never realised that Demon's Souls refer to the souls owned by Demon (or at least a particular demon)...

How? I've always wanted to but assumed there wasn't an option.
Press the home button and when the little "Close this software and return to the HOME menu" box pops up, hold the start button, and either press up on the d-pad to increase the brightness level or down to lower it.

Thanks. That's so convoluted and quirky it could only be Nintendo.

Hadn't seen the sprites before. I remember reading about that content when someone found the text associated with the scenes. Wonder why they changed their minds.

So at one point we almost got Wario in a Mario RPG for even the briefest cameo, one day we'll get the Wario and Waluigi spin off everyone wants, or should want.

I'm intrigued as to what happens with Excitebike guy.

Cashier : Hey? Is that the sound of a
motorcycle I hear?
Hey, buddy! What are you doin'?!
This isn't a drive-through!!!
What? Are you thirsty or
something? Fine, but no need
to get so...EXCITED!
Are your engines on full throttle?

Drives in, gets coffee and drives off. I'm guessing he crashes before the coffee based on "but no need to get so...EXCITED".

This perhaps stretches the bounds of this thread, but it turns out the voice of scorpion in the mortal kombat movie is none other than
ed boon
. Not only that, the primary fight choreographer is no other than robin shou who played Liu Lang (no wonder he always wins)

Boon is always the voice of Scorpion. At least with the "Get over here!"s.

You can dress up as Wario and Waluigi in Paper Mario 2 and then pretend to play as them. Only a surrogate for the real thing obviously, but it was still pretty neat.
