Saw it last night at a sneak preview in Japan. I liked it a lot, especially the fight scenes and the webswinging scenes. The reviews are pretty much right in that it gets a little heavy with the teen romance stuff, but in my opinion they didn't overdo it.

Late to the party a bit, but I have to say this is the most amazing OP I've ever seen on NeoGAF. Pun intended?

But seriously, uses text where appropriate, logical structuring, great images. Love it.

Hope the movie is worth it!

Anyone seethe game's intro? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlTAg3belOU :lol So bad.

Awesome. A bunch of US screenings tomorrow I believe as well.

Thanks man.

Rewatched Spider-man yesterday. Sentry, you were right, it hasn't aged well at all and to me (now) it really is a tad hollow. It still nails characters like J. Jonah Jameson and Green Goblin, but theres just a few things that take me out of the experience. Back when I hadn't known the finer side of films the movie was great, now that I have some perspective its only alright. Hopefully, TASM will be excellent.

Also, Mary Janes hair is an unnatural color of red. Seriously.

^Jonah is the best thing across all the SM movies imo. They perfectly nailed him. And apart from the costume, Dafoe was an excellent Green Goblin too.

But yeah, after a rewatch you definitely get that sense of 'cheese' and sort of shallowness in some aspects. Overall they're still classics regardless, but going back to see them again can't hurt..

I love spider-man so was gonna go see this but really wasn't expecting much.
To be honest its getting slightly better reviews then I anticipated and hype is slowly rising!!!

Since I haven't been THAT hyped Ive stayed away from a lot of the trailers and clips so hopefully it feels really fresh for me.

Really hope they nail the web slinging. Ive always thought Spider-Man lends himself best to film because web slinging around NYC is so cool. Can't wait to see that in 3D :)

Most definitely. For some reason, the best example of shallowness was the whole "Oh, if I can buy a car, MJ will pay more attention to me, right? RIGHT?!"

Then theres the whole scene where Aunt May is saying her good night prayers...

Just came out of the theatre here in Barcelona. Pretty good movie, much better than the Raimi ones. The story is more similar to the one in the comic books, they change some minor things to make it 'fresh', nothing important. Good action scenes, good dialogue, Andrew Garfield is much better than Tobey, Emma Stone is perfect in her role, a bit of comedy here, a bit of drama there...overall, pretty good and solid. Came in expecting nothing, came out pretty satisfied.

"Emma Watson"

Hermione in a Spidey movie :O jk

It's Emma Stone.

Yup, my fault, but I think is normal considering they are both hot.

haha true true

Glad to hear even more praise for Garfield.

Yes, he does a really good job. You believe that he's Peter Parker, unlike Tobey Maguire, who to me was the opposite of what the character really is. So, anyone who thinks 'bah, I saw the other 3, I won't bother because it's the same story', you are wrong. If you enjoyed the other ones, you'll enjoy this one more. In fact, the best thing you can do is to forget that the preovious one exist.

Saw it today, very good movie, and I'm not a Spidey fan. Far, far better than the old one. Good performance from Garfield and Emma. Stan Lee's cameo is awesome lol

Really digging the positive impressions.

For what it's worth Kotaku put up their review following the Japan premiere.

Final Thoughts

Despite the (admittedly minor) complaints I had about the film, I found The Amazing Spider-Man to be a generally well thought out, well-acted movie. I'd go so far as to call it the best superhero origin film this side of Iron Man. It was a refreshing take on the character and the supporting cast really blew me away. And now that we have all this origin business out of the way, I look forward to seeing what this spider can do when he's free of his web.

From the trailers it looks like they made human Connors a villain rather than the miserable good guy in the comics/cartoons.

That's kind of unfortunate but I'll know after I see it.

That actually doesn't seem to be the case AT ALL. Those dialog bits are probably when he's already half lizard anyway, but from the recent clips of Conners, it seems he serves almost as a father figure for Peter for a bit, and is a genuine scientist who isn't exactly stupid enough to test on himself for the hell of it. Spoilers:
He is pushed by Oscorp to produce results asap and do human trials, but he refuses until he is threatened. Or something along these lines.

I'm guessing Lizard as a villain isn't the focal point of the movie at all, just more of a setup as to what Oscorp does and is capable of for future movies.

News media is so annoying!! This guy is playing Spider-Man. Spider-Man!! This interview should be cool and fun, instead it devolves into a discussion about bullying. I can't stand the media ugh!!!

It kind of makes sense - they're pushing the 'good guy' Spidey image pretty hard in the marketing of this movie.

Just back from seeing this. Aside from the Coldplay song during a montage sequence the movie was really good. Probably the best Spider-man movie. Martin Sheen in particular is incredible in the movie. Him and Sally Fields Aunt May have some incredible married couple banter aswell.

To pass time until some of us can see the movie and while others wait for reviews, what got some of you into Spider-man? What was the appeal to you?

The design of the costume is very appealing to me; color combination, eyes... pretty much everything. Web swinging, smart and Parker's humor. My first exposure to Spidey was some action figures from the early 90's plus the cartoon.

The way McFarlane drew MJ's tits.

But in all seriousness, I wasn't really into the character until the 90s animated series. And the Maximum Carnage series as well as the game helped. It's odd because I initally got into him for his rogue gallery. They just looked so much fucking cooler than any group of villains for a given super hero.

But as I started reading more and began collecting past issues, Peter Parker quickly became a favourite of mine. Especially with DeMatteis writing in the late 80s and early 90s, the reader (or at least I) could get into the worried mind of Peter with an ease that I wasn't used to when it came to comic book heroes. What I was used to was following a plot or a storyline. I enjoyed Batman like I enjoyed Kraven - they were fucking cool fictional characters. But Parker resonated on a more personal level of empathy.

I do like the implicit "movie's gonna bomb" vibe in your post. You really seem to be hating all of it Sculli, what a magnificent troll.

I've never said the movie was going to bomb. You marketing people need to stop being so sensitive. I just couldn't help but notice that TDKR thread moves about 3 pages in a day for a film that comes out in a month, where as this thread moves about 2 pages in a week and releases in a few days.

Again (and I don't know how many times I have to say this to you), I hope the movie is good. Why on Earth would I wish for any movie that I'm going to see to be bad?

I grew up with Spider-Man during the Mary Jane years when they were living in Soho. I loved how different his powers were than most heroes, the costume, his wise cracks but what really appealed to me was how personal the books were. Trying to make ends meet with webbing expense, using his exploits to fund his freelance Bugle work, complications with Mary Jane and her soap opera career, etc. He also has my favorite rogues gallery which I found even more appealing because of how many of them were people he knew and the strain it put on him. Norman Osborn forcing his family into that family dinner in Spectacular Spider-Man is an image that is still stuck with me He also kind of reminded me of Jackie Chan since you always seeing the physical toll his hero work put on him. Didn't matter how badly he got beat down he would pick himself back up and push himself anyway. He was a superhero but he also came off as human at the same time. It really sucks that I lost interest in the comics because of how shitty Marvel started treating them. I swear the Spidey/Mary Jane/Mephisto stuff still pisses me off to this day. To be fair Marvel and DC have turned me off of most of their properties. I can't even read Superman with the new 52 and shitty ass new suits.

Another review

3/5

The question of just why audiences need (or want) a rebooted 3D origin story for a film franchise only a few year's cold remains to be convincingly answered. Webb manages to nail the human aspect of the NYC teen superhero's story - arguably far better than Raimi - but fails to deliver the same types of visual awe as its 2002 opposite number. Marvel fans may well have their spider sense tingled by this latest comic-book conversion (Stan Lee even makes his customary cameo as a school librarian), but there is little to suggest that The Amazing Spider-Man can go toe-to-toe with this summer's other costumed heavyweights Avengers Assemble and The Dark Knight Rises.

Oh god, again with this reboot complaint, if only, they could stfu. It doesnt even matter, I've seen the Spidey movies countless times and I did not for once think of it while watching TASM, it just feels new, fresh, and like it's the very first Spidey movie.

Damn glad they rebooted, it's so much better and so damn good.

I've become less and less of a fan of Raimi's Spidey films as time has gone on, so I have no problem believing The Amazing Spider-Man could surpass those for me. I still enjoy Spider-Man 2, but I can barely watch 1 and can't stand 3 at this point. Essentially I'm not upset about how quickly Sony decided to reboot the franchise, since Raimi's wasn't exactly heading in a great direction anyway; may as well hit the eject button while you still can.

I think the problem comes from the fact that this is sandwiched between the iron grip of The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. Sony's plan to release the entire damn movie in clip form on the internet in some last-ditch effort to create buzz has come back to bite them, I feel like I've seen all the cool moments from the movie in some form or another over the last two months. I hope I'm wrong and that when I see the movie next week there'll still be some surprises, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Been reading my Straczynski + John Romita Jr. 'Amazing Spider-Man' trade paparbacks (the comics that got me into comics) to get myself hyped. Not working out quite the way I planned; I'm more interested in reading Spider-Man comics again instead of wanting to see the movie more. Meh, worse dilemmas to have I suppose.

It releases in 8-9 days, in most places. The Avengers OT wasn't doing much 7 days out.

I think the TDKR thread has very little to do with the film. Just a bunch of guys posting pics of Nolan and jerking off.

My first owned issue of Spider-Man was during Maximum Carnage

I think my favorite thing about it was Doppelganger :P

Well that sounds better. :P
