Wada: No Final Fantasy VII Remake Until Original Has Been Topped

I thought it was surprisingly logical coming out of him. I take it to say that at the present time they're not making a game that would exceed the quality of FFVII (whether that would be critic or fan reaction towards it, or even the base amount of stuff that the game offers to the player). He could also be implying that if they do make a FFVII remake at the moment and pour all of their resources into that, that would kind of be like surrendering and almost saying that they can't possibly make a newer title in the series to produce the equivalent amount of fanfare that FFVII had at its release--that they have to go back to FFVII to 'relive the magic' as it were, rather than produce a game that would meet or exceed it themselves.

Yes, yes, yes.

I think they're just making excuses. They just need to come out and admit that they don't really want to remake the same game over again with nice textures and HD visuals. Well, at least not games like these. It would probably take 5-7yrs of work to get it done. A lot of people say Square could start printing money if they had a remake for this game. How sure can we be about such a claim?

Lost me there. Also, it would sell a fucking ton. Have you not seen xsephirothx8834 playing Call of Duty?
I don't know of any remake that sold better than the original version. Perhaps FF7 could be the anomaly, but I highly doubt it. It has been 15 years since FF7, which is enough time for a whole new group of gamers to grow up without ever playing the game.

Yes, yes, yes.
Yeah, that's exactly what I read into it as well.

I didn't say it would sell better than the original, but I think you guys are underestimating how iconic the game is. Purely anecdotal, but I think Cloud/Sephiroth may be the most recognized video game character period aside from Mario himself. At least, among people who are buying video games. If you're trying to create a Live/PSN/Steam username with the word "Cloud" or "Sephiroth" in it, good luck.

I try to stay the fuck away from FPSes so no.

Also I have never heard of a remake of a fifteen year-old game being as successful as the original.

edit: Final Fantasy IX's load times were atrocious. I cannot consider that game better than VII just because of that.

What's the bet they'll update VIII and IX after they rehash X and XII.

I can imagine VI and VII are their get out of jail free cards if someone drives the company into the ground in the future.

they weren't that bad. even with the slower battle system and load times, IX is just a completely better product.
Except for the fact that the animations kept on getting longer, and all the fun in the plot went to shit after the third disc when it started taking itself seriously.

Though at the time, from what my older cousins tell me, anyway, I think FFVII had its fair share of detractors as well.

Makes sense. Interesting take, I could buy that.

Just how much money do you think it would cost to remake FFVII? You don't think $1 Billion would be enough? Really?

This is on top of what they would receive from retail sales.

Put enough money in front of somebodies face...You'll be surprised at just what can happen, and how fast no will turn to yes.

Well I was actually joking, but Wada (or Kitase) has gone on record to say it would take 10 time as long at 10 times the cost of FFXIII for an FF7 remake.

If they make an entire real FF game out of FFXIII's beautiful hallways, then sure. The Final Fantasy series is evolving to a point where FFXX will just be a really pretty screenshot.

It could be this

but how does it compare to XVI?

I thought it was really awesome how XVI returned to hand-drawn 2D artwork, as if they had been advancing 2D tech all these years. At least visually, I don't think there's any chance a VII remake could even come close to touching XVI. Of course, the live-action cut scenes in XVI made it feel kinda cheap, even with big stars like Ashton Kucher, but no game is perfect.

Yeah. I wonder what the multiplier would actually be though. I don't think it'd be too much, right?

Well, whoever said it does have a point in the sense it would take a long ass time if they wanted it to be on par with FFXIII graphically. Doing all the town/dungeon/whatever assets, world map, etc would set them back quite a few years unless they wanted to adopt a more western approach and have a gigantic team with contractors and stuff.

I don't mean to get off-topic, but there are people who dislike the incredible ending of FFIX? Damn. I thought that end was just incredible. I guess there's no pleasing everyone.

VII was mindblowing at the time and in that respect it hasn't been topped.

Looking at it just in terms of how good the games are now it might not even crack the top 50%.

A last boss that really has nothing to do with the story, is not a character with a personality, and just appears to give you one last thing to fight...that's incredible?

I played this game when...let's see, I was 11. So perhaps it wouldn't be as incredible now if I saw it. Despite a deus-ex machima style boss, I just remember being really satisfied with the actual ending...the events with
kuja
and how that all wrapped up. i also remember liking the world before all this. i don't remember the name of it. i remember loving the scene where the amazing "you're not alone" track plays.

Also I always thought the final boss was there to
make the ending...I mean, with the events of Kuja and all, it seems like they needed SOMETHING after Trance Kuja.
. Sure, it was a lame plot twist, but once I saw how it all concluded I just remember being very satisfied.

Edit: OK, I swear, I am back on-topic now. :P

Wada admitted that at present, the company is not making Final Fantasy games that exceed the quality of FFVII. If they were to release a 7 remake right now, the FF franchise would be done with, he said.

What is this bullshit logic.

He's right. X and IX might have been better but that was Squaresoft. Square Enix console FF's have all been far inferior to VII so far. And yes I'm including XII in that statement. Especially XII.

Protip for Wada: If you're waiting to surpass VII, putting Toriyama at the helm of the franchise's iterations this generation isn't the way to do it. Neither is showing a tech demo that you're contemplating using for a basis of FFXV that, while visually stunning, looks like Call of Final Fantasy.

Honestly, if he's wanting the series to exceed VII then he's going to really remove Toriyama. He hasn't helped much in the narrative department at all.

Wada is right. I really liked VIII-XII, too, but we all know that VII was a game apart. A coming-of-age for the medium.

Good, a FFVII remake would solve none of their problems. Get your shit together, fix XIV, release Versus XIII,
scrap XIII-3
, release Type-0 on Vita/3DS in the west and make XV as good as possible. THEN you can talk about remaking FFVII.

What about Kingdom Hearts III? Surely that must come before XV, right?
