3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Not necessarily, all the system has to do is reroute the video from the TV to the GamePad. I'm actually expecting all VC and Wii games will be streamable to the GamePad from day 1.

I really hope you are right, one of my biggest complaints with Nintendo right now is keeping people in the dark about simple useful info like these little points

Thanks for the reply. I've been wondering what would happen if I wanted to move my downloads to a new SD card.

As long as you're not moving the games to a new 3DS, you can transfer your content between SD cards as much as you want. It's only when you transfer to a new 3DS that you first have to transfer the licenses first. It's not an elegant solution like on Xbox Live, but it's pretty much all Nintendo's got right now. Better than nothing, as they say. You'd think they'd make it easier for users to move to new iterations of handhelds since they rely so heavily on people buying more than one (new colors, various hardware changes etc).

I had problems with the controls for about the first 2 chapters... then it was fine! No stand. I get why some people would dislike it though, but it's really not that hard.

Not sure if you would like it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you couldn't even manage to fly above the clouds in SS, haha

True, SS's controls kept me-and many others, apparently- from enjoying or getting anywhere near finishing the game, but I literally can't think of a single other game from my 20-something years of gaming that I had to cease playing because of the controls. So it was an isolated case. I'm more than willing to give KI a shot.

I hope it clicks for you man. If it does, me and a few other cool people will be chillin in the official thread of here in gaf's graveyard/butthole section

I wonder how comfortable it will be to play a game like Kid Icarus if you have to stretch the stylus across more screen real estate?

Controlling the crosshair is more about swipes than covering the screen space with the stylus. But I guess it depends on how you have your control sensitivity setup too though. I feel bad for the people that use Powers with the touch screen though. those guys are screwed.

Fuckin'...

Is there a transfer for my downloaded stuff/saves?

I will totally switch.

(EDIT)
Yes there is.

Excellent. Will be buying for sure. So many Dpad games (virtual console stuff) that will be 100x more playable now.

I really really really want this now.

Honestly going from my DSi XL > 3DS was really difficult. It took me awhile to 'downgrade' my eyes back to having a small screen again. It actually got to the point where I had to force myself NOT to play the XL anymore (I had planned to just keep using it for DS games), it was just the only way I could be content with my new 3DS.

Now! They fix my most wanted 3DS feature (bigger screen) and still fairly early into its life. Sweeeet.

Just wish I could get the new one in white. :( But ah well, silver (maybe, haven't decided) will do.

Really excited for the system, sounds great!

The talk of some sort of filter has me worried. I definitely don't want anything like that with 3DS games.

I'm not worried yet. So far it's just been that 1 French site stating that

- They think there's some kind of "filter" at works here because the pixels appear "rounded."

From Google translate:
[*]Image looks better/softer (they assume there might be some filter but not sure)

To me all that ^ sounds like it could just be the larger pixels giving it a "softer" look.

Remember how when the GBA micro was released people liked how crisp and sharp it made GBA games look... well this would be the opposite of that

New french preview here:
http://www.bamarenlive.com/2012/06/test-nintendo-3ds-xl.html

- while the image looked worse on a DSiXL than on a DSi, it's not the case here. 3DSXL pixels look as defined as on 3DS.

And if your point of reference is the DSi XL's 76 ppi of course the 3DS XL will look better... I still doubt it looks the same as the original 3DS though

Basically I'm waiting for more hands on impressions before I believe it has some kind of filter. I still think it could be larger pixels that are still smaller then the DSi XL's pixels giving this weird impression of a filter.

I'm really tempted to get one of these. If the graphics aren't overly pixelated and the 3D is improved I'll most likely bite. The only thing holding me back is the damn region locking, all my games are American and I'm in Australia.

I wonder why these guys got their hands on the XL and not a place like gameinformer? Nintendo truly hates them? What about EDGE NOE?

I am not putting my faith on these yet until I read the same from many different sources

I really hate what the regular 3DS is made off too, my hands are clean but the thing still manages to get sooo dirty and smudgy, finger prints everywhere its like having an old PSP. *puke*

XL looks to be made of similar stuff to DSi/XL? Please be.

Seriously, making black and white Japan only seems really boneheaded. Nintendo may have been on to something with tablet sized handheld, but then they bone it up with kiddy candy colors? Nintendo, you're either boners, or you got a huge pair of bones.

I'm assuming there was some kind of European press event.

One of my favorite things about the XL is the placement of the stylus returning to where it was located on the DS lite. To me that is the perfect location for human* gamers.

*Left handed people are not human.

suddenly, the purple 3ds doesn't look as gorgeous.

they didn't up the processor speed at all, right? so webpages will probably load the same as 3ds...which isn't too much worse than ps Vita, imo.

vita did get youtube app today, though...although a little limited, it looks gorgeous.

Will likely get one of these when able to buy a 3DS.

do the 3DS and 3ds xl still retain ability to use single cart DS games for multiplayer (certain games) such as mario kart ds, new super mario brothers DS... etc.

OK Nintendo you win !

Yes; there's a Download Play app that's built into the 3DS that will allow you to select between searching for DS and 3DS signals.

Sorry this is a little off topic, but do we know what games are going to be available for download on 3DS? I know that NSMB2 is going to be available as a digital download at launch, but what other games will be offered?

The XL looks really nice and I definitely want one, but especially for handhelds I really like the idea of having all of my games on the system, so I'd like to get a 32GB SD card and go all digital. If NSMB2 is going to be the only game available for awhile I'll hold off until Luigi's Mansion and/ or Paper Mario are out. If there's going to be a decent selection the day the XL comes out or shortly after I'll pick it up Day 1.
I'm pretty sure every game released after NSMB2 will be downloadable day and date with retail? Previous releases will be added later I guess?

I'm assuming there was some kind of European press event.

Based on the retail red demo 3DS display in the background, I assumed this guy was at a store that had just received a new demo unit for the XL like Nintendo claimed were being sent out last week. If it were an official event I think we would have heard more by now. That's pure conjecture on my part though.

I was disappointed in the screens having the same resolution as the original, but if some anti-aliasing technology is embedded to reduce jaggies in my 3ds games...I may bite

Silver looks pretty great, even if the two tone is still really weird.

This sounds like what it does now, but it's more noticeable at the bigger size, I imagine. To see this in action, load something with sharp lines (like a cartoon) in Netflix, and fiddle with the slider. You'll see a defined grid of pixels in 3D, and more of a continuous horizontal line in 2D.

- Speakers and sounds doesn't appear to have improve. (Was in a noisy room, to confirm.
Goddammit. The incredible lack of speaker power of the 3DS is probably my least favorite thing about it.

So they have seemingly fixed my 2 main issues with the 3DS... the 3D implementation and the comfort.

I'm eager to try it out now... Pitty there's no second nub but I didn't expect them to add one.

that's how I feel, as previously posted

but then there's also this impression:

So idk..

I think they are holding off on White and Black in the US because when Black and White 2 Come out, they are going to come out with a Special 3DSXL Bundle that comes preloaded with AR Searcher and Pokedex Pro.

Would it be unreasonable to expect limited edition XLs within a few months of release?

The 3dsxl will be playable in Paris at Japan expo 2012, next week. I'll soon know if i'm buying one or not... I'm eager to see it up close, and judge if the 3d is better with this new screen. I'll try to take some good pics and report my impressions.

Thanks ! Here's a bigger pic somebody reblogged on tumblr from my pixiv : http://alcharlie.tumblr.com/post/23473481796/king-arthur-of-hearts

Looking forward to your posts.

Will buy if it doesn't have some design printed on the top of the system.

My mind is saying "NO" to getting this. But, my heart is saying "YES" to get this. I would be more inclined if I didn't get a NYKO battery extender grip the other week. Still I'm interested, considering this comes out a few days after my birthday so perhaps I could nudge my mom or brother to get this. IDK.

What's also possible is that the DSi XL crossed a threshold for DPI that shouldn't be crossed, but the 3DS XL is roughly the same DPI as the DSi so it ends up still looking pretty good.

They make these for fans...and kids, of course they will. The Special Black DSi with Pokemon Black is the only reason I own a DSi...and I bought that 2 weeks before buying my 3DS day one.

Would it be unreasonable to expect limited edition XLs within a few months of release?

Some people already felt the Zelda 3DS was too soon and too late at the same time. Too soon after the 3DS launch, and not for the OoT Launch. I can see them doing it just to piss people off.

This sounds really good. I'll tell my sister to trade in her pink DSi for the 3DS XL if the 1:1 is similar to DSi.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a bundle around November without any change in price, like the SM3DL bundle last year iirc
